Cairo back here for totally useless English, silent carrier with occasional extremely distorted modulation peaks breaking thru, S9+30 into UTwente and way down to 9899.765 by 2157 recheck. Meanwhile nothing on new A-22 registered for 2115-2245 English, 9440 --- which was however reported in the WORO iog on first day of season, March 27 when I missed checking: ``Clear audio on the new A22 frequency 9440 in English from 2115-2245 on March 27. I could understand practically every word! Seems that the announcing team is wholly female. Good selection of interesting health, tourist and cultural items as well as World News. Radio Cairo is using the transmitter with the hum on the 9410-9440 channels. Modulation is much better. The hum can be reduced by notching out on the receiver. The transmitter with the severe distortion is used on 9810 2000-2115 in French (they used 9890 by mistake yesterday and co-channel to CRI). 9410 in German 1900-2000 seems to be co-channel to BBC. Cairo as now scheduled, signature offfrequenciness, into UTwente (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT. 9440, March 29 at 2223 direct, JBA carrier, hard to believe it`s Cairo in English direct but nothing else is registered A22 in HFCC at 2115-2245, nor as copied in Aoki. Cairo had been reported March 27 on 9440, but not March 28. 9900 however has two weak signals, one about 9899.8 typical of Cairo and the other in Chinese. Then via UTwente at 2235, Cairo is definitely on 9899.759, customarily just barely modulated at S9+45. But in A-22, ``9900`` is now allegedly for Portuguese at 2215-2330; AFAIK the S American services had not made a comeback on whatever frequencies: Arabic 2330-0045 on 9885 but unchecked; Spanish 0045-0200 on 9890. But checking 9890 at 0055 March 30 into UTwente, there is a weak signal in Portuguese! listing a bunch of transmissions with CRI-like music and off. Not in HFCC or Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** EGYPT. 9409.995, March 30 at 1544, R. Cairo terribly distorted with humwhine into UTwente, new A22 frequency for 1500 Albanian hour, ex-9440. Stays on past 1600 timesignal, music, 1604 Qur`an until cut off at 1605*. Something`s always egregious in Egypt. Nothing from Cairo is scheduled at 16-17. 9410 is a legacy BBC GOS/WS frequency, once exclusively English from UK only. Now in use most of the day in variety of languages and sites, English at 15-16 via Oman, but I could not detect it under Cairo blob. USAGM and China are also on 9410 at times (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** GERMANY. 15690+, March 27 at 1451, algo audibly off-frequency-plus. Only A-22 is USAGM in Farsi via Biblis, i.e. R. Farda. Too big a hurry to measure exactly. What in the world is going on with USAGM engineering standards? More and more sites don`t, won`t or can`t hit near-exact frequencies within a few Hz. 15640, Lampertheim does better, March 27 at 1452, S9/S7 with flutter, SW Asian language not off-frequency. Listed as Pst, presumably Pashto, one of the Afghanistan-area surrogates (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** GREECE. 9420, March 30 at 0339-0416+, great music selexion from VOG, tune after tune seguéd but no announcements; some instrumental, some vocal, some Greek, some not, e.g. Cuban rhythm at 0349, no pauses. 0401 Greek timecheck as ``UTC: tessera``, ID ``Edho Athina, I Foni tis Hellados`` and back to music. Good reception direct thru interior longwire during storm, with selective fading to brand this as via ``the dynamic medium of international shortwave, between the AM and FM bands``. Did not check calibration, but still running at 1558 when the only WWV JBA is 20000, SAM showing carrier offset within plus/minus 1 Hz, which must be instability of receiver, not WWV, but close to accurate. Nothing else of note on 60m circa 0136: 4765 Cuba? is JBA only S5-S6. Need to keep checking, also the 18-19 hour on MW 1395 definitely Armenia, q.v.: 1395 is still on March 27 before and after 1900, but 9370 is again absent into Russian SDRs after 1900 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also USA: WRMI: 7780 ** RUSSIA [non]. A few minutes after my last report was dispatched, I check 9370 one more time via Pskov, Russia, remote, at 1959 March 27 and now it`s on VG, just in time to hear it closing and off 2000*. At beginning of 1900 hour and various times amid, I never heard it, but Richard Langley replies: ``Glenn: On 26 March, Radio Svoboda on 9370 kHz was on the air before 19:00 UTC. But the transmitter went QRT at about 19:06 UTC. It returned to the air at about 19:53 UTC and continued to the end of the broadcast. What was the problem? On 27 March, all was normal. Svoboda relay in Russian via WRMI is now here ex-7780, S9+10, while TOMBS cult is on 7780 and weaker S9 into Missouri SDR. Svoboda hours remain 02-03 & 04-05, never 02-04 as in a Radio World article. The reason for switch from 7780 to 7730 on the 44-degree antenna is that the 17th! harmonic of 7.78 MHz on 132.26 MHz was interfering with aeronautical communications east of WRMI. Now the 17th harmonic of 7.73 MHz on 131.41 MHz is not to be a problem (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** RUSSIA [non]. 9370, March 29 at 1951, R. Remains to be heard how well it may hold up at least until 2200-2230 for M/W/F English, let alone until 0200*. Weekday opening is *1800. Ex-12030, now 15520 to ME is S9/+10 at 1454, a valuable alternative off the back if 17855 be MUFing out; yet HFCC has 15520 at 1730-2200 M-F only: that can`t be correct. Amy Egan hosts, after news over to Gil Carbajal with interviews about a revival produxion in Madrid of Prokofiev`s opera `Fiery Angel`. It was suppressed by USSR and the composer never witnessed a performance, how sad. He did rework many of the themes into his Third Symphony. I`m not familiar with it and wonder if and when The Met performed it? Wikipedia mentions no performances in America, just western Europe except for a recording by the Kirov Opera, Leningrad. Unfortunately, very little of the music is heard during the REE interviews. I take this opportunity to urge that despite Putin the Putrid, we must not reject Russian culture, including the greatest composers ever. Also mentioned ``po-Russki``. Maybe it`s Pres. Zelenskyy but I can`t recognize his voice for sure. Richard Langley suggests that the English capsules may have got lost in a merger of Ukrainian networks: ``Ukrainian Radio may have stopped the English segment "Ukraine: security issue" around 0100 UT during the unified broadcasts on its four channels. I didn't record a segment and there was no indication on the Ukrainian Radio website that it was broadcast on 28 March (UT). One can replay any segment of a day's broadcast. And Glenn reported that he did not hear an English segment this morning on the WRMI relay. There is now a special Web page for "Ukraine: security issue" indicating that this news segment is available on line in additional languages: Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Bulgarian, Russian, and Belarusian: http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/ua_security_issue Not all languages are available on every day. We'll have to see if the English segment is broadcast tomorrow. -- Richard Langley`` [March 28] ``Could it have moved an hour earlier with the clock change to summer time on 27 March across most of Europe, has anyone tried for English around 0000-0010 UT since 27th? 73s Dave Kenny``, UK ``I had thought of that but the segment wasn't listed anywhere in the day for the 28th. Richard Langley follows up on the WOR iog: ``I had the time of the English segment wrong. Indeed it is now shortly after 0000 UT rather than 0100 UT after the clock change. Airing at same local time. Anyhow, 5985 aimed 222 for C America, does put a good S9+5/15 signal into Bonaire SDR, checked at 0340; unlike to N America here off the side. I had tuned in direct at 0327, to hear it cut on at *0328 with `top of the hour` BBB ID and IS loop, reading S8/S9 but noisy. This WRMI-2 transmitter on 5985 is the least-used of all, only 0330-0430 except UT Sun & Mon an additional sesquihour = total 10 hours per week. And at 0400-0430 has been R. WORLD OF RADIO 2131 monitoring: confirmed Saturday March 26 at 1930 on WRMI 15770, S8/S9+10 into UTwente. I`m pleased that WRMI chose to air me instead of President Biden`s ``major`` 1716 UT speech in Warszawa on an extra `Flashpoint Ukraine` which VOA was streaming this Saturday in addition to M-F at 1935. Also confirmed Saturday March 26 at 1931 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+10 into near-local SDR, about 2 minutes into so started circa 1929. Also confirmed UT Sunday March 27 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, S9+5/10, so not yet made the switch to 7780, now with Slovakia relay at S9+10/15. 7780 should not be stronger than 7730 if they are still on NE, NW antennas respectively. Or maybe the reactivated 7730 is underpowered and/or on an inferior repaired antenna? WOR 2131 also confirmed UT Sunday March 27 ending at 0351.9 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9+10 to nearby SDR, so started circa 0323. Also confirmed Sunday March 27 at 1350 the still-at-1330 UT on WMRI Europe via Channel 292, Germany, 9670: S9+20 into UTwente showing +14 Hz offset; no QRM but modulation rather than signal is steadily fading twice per second, even more so at 1506 check. Not making it to Iceland SDR. Alan Roe, UK, also confirms WOR but no fading like that on his radio, ending at 1354 so must have started early circa 1325. See also UK [non] for more about WMRI. Also at same one-hour earlified time on WRN Europe webcast. Also confirmed Sunday March 27 at 2230 still on WRMI 5950, altho deleted from schedule, pending a new program? S9+15/20 into Knoxville SDR. Also confirmed UT Monday March 28 at 0030 on WRMI 7780 ex-7730, S7/S9+5 into Missouri SDR; yet 7730 with swapped programming is stronger, S9+15/20. Weaker signal on 7780 is because it`s not really on the 285 degree WNW antenna which had been 7730, but on a 222-degree log-periodic, i.e. right off the side to our direxion. Also confirmed UT Monday March 28 at 0130 on earlified WRN North America webcast. Also confirmed UT Monday March 28 at 0300 on Area 51 via WBCQ 6160v, S9+10 into Maryland SDR. WORLD OF RADIO 2131 monitoring: Since I`m already running UTwente for Cairo chex, March 29 at 2234, I also check it for the Tuesday 2230 WOR on 9955 WRMI, not aimed at Europe: it`s JBA under heavy pulsing, OTH radar? not like Cuban jamming, adding up to S9/+10. At 2239, Maryland SDR has very different Cuban pulse jamming only underneath, S9+5/10. Then St Lucia SDR? Buried in high noise level. Minneapolis? S7/S9 without jamming. Monitoring direct at first, not even a carrier can be detected in high storm noise level: there is none nearby now, but plenty Blitz across Mississippi, into LA/TN/KY; also scattered storms over NM mountains. So I have to check via Maryland remote where it`s S7/S9 vs storm noise but OK on webcast. An hour later at 2159 direct, JBA carrier detectable in storm noise. Pollard, Raleigh NC, who sent a generous equinoxial check on a US bank to Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 One may also contribute, via PayPal not necessarily in US$ to woradio at yahoo.com Next new WOR 2132 should be ready for download early UT Friday April 1 for first broadcasts at 0130 on WRMIs 5850 & 7730-ex-7780 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7730, March 24 at 0053, still no reactivation of this WRMI frequency which was supposed to occur some 25 hours ago; nor for a few hours more monitoring nothing here. No explanation on the disgraced FB of WRMI, the go-to place for latest station news, if any. Later: Jeff told me it would really be back by UT March 25, and so it is but 7730 seems weaker than it should be at 0050 check. We are getting close to the Grand Swap of all 7730 & 7780 programming for A-22, effective March 27 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 15770, Fri March 25 at 1935, WRMI relay of `Flashpoint Ukraine` of VOA; 1959 conclusion says there will be a special edition tomorrow Saturday due to Pres. Biden speech in Europe. So that might blow away the WOR 1930 time on 15770 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7780, March 27 at 0352, R. Svoboda in Russian via WRMI, S9+15 into Missouri SDR to the NW; while reactivated 7730 with TOMBS is only S8/S9, presumably on NE antenna unless underpowered. For A22 R. Svoboda is supposed to be on 7730 to the NE, ex-7780 to the NE. Hope they get these untangled ASAP. Another check direct at 0631: 7780 with TOMBS cult is S9+10/20; 7730 now also with TOMBS, only S9/S8 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7780, Sat Mar 26 at 0619, as I tune in, immediate ID for Radio Tirana, Albania, S9+10, what? A new time for this. As of today, WRMI skedgrid at the top shows 7780 off the air after Ukraine relay until 0600. However, contradictorily, the System H program grid shows Tirana now on 7780 daily except Wednesdays 0600-0630. However2, 7780 is now much stronger than 7730 which is only S6/S8 with TOMBS and // 5850, 5890, etc., etc. Thus I conclude that the supposed exchange as of March 27 has already happened. 7780 had been on NE antenna, 7730 on NW antenna thisaway. Now it`s 7780 to NW and 7730 to NE. Entire program sked of each however, has not yet been swapped, how confusing. The program skeds are still dated effective more than a year ago, March 14, 2021! As for the Shortwaves for Freedom - sponsored shows, their A-22 update shows nothing additional, but 7730 instead of 7780 for the R. Svobodas at 02-03 & 04-05 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) {But see Jeff`s explanation further below} ** U S A. 5985, March 28 at 0400, I`m monitoring WRMI via Brownsville TX TWR SDR, when it`s time for NHK World Radio Japan`s Spanish broadcast which has just been canceled. It`s only S5/S6 but better S9/+15 at TWR Bonaire, this 222 degree beam toward C America. Regular lovely `Sakura` opening theme, but modulation chopped at 0401, dead air of carrier still on rest of semihour, as if WRMI just realized it was supposed to be canceled but nothing yet to replace it. Was probably starting automatically to play back last edition uploaded to server, yesterday`s? 0430 modulation resumes with variety program in Spanish. I suspect it`s `La Rosa de Tokio`, but skedgrid calls for it to be on UT Sunday, not Monday when `Viva Miami` supposedly occupies the entire semihour. Seems interrupted at 0459 for ID, but unknown what`s next as I am over to 7730 for Ukraine relay, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9955 & 9455, March 28 at 0609, no signals from these WRMIs tho propagation is fine, S9+20 of TOMBS on 9395. All three are supposed to be 24h per new skedgrid dated March 27. BTW, 9395 & 9455 are no longer shown as same azimuth, rather 355 on 9395, 285 on 9455, which explains the disparity in signals to the east coast but not the Midwest (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) More WRMI: RUSSIA, UKRAINE [nons] ** U S A. The unID Spanish program I heard UT Monday March 28 at 0430-0500 on 5985 WRMI must have been this: `Antena DX` from Panamá, reactivated monthly according to AER, which participates with a DX report: ``El programa se emite por primera vez el lunes posterior al cuarto domingo de mes por 5985 de 0430 a 0500 (domingo en la noche en las Américas) y se repite el jueves siguiente por 9955 de 0100 a 0130`` It`s unfortunate that often there is a considerable lag between something starting on the air and appearing correctly on the WRMI skedgrid. Now it does show `Antena DX` only once, and at a totally different time, Wednesdays 1300-1330 UT on 9955; while Wednesdays at 9-9:30 pm EDT on 9955 is `Aletheia Quest with Alan Fahrner`, whatever in the world that may be. Wasn`t `Antena DX` once also on the WBCQ schedule? But not shown now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9955, Tue March 29 at 1441, no signal from this WRMI, so final repeat of `SW Radiogram` is missed. Still in well are 9395 & 9455 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9330, March 24 at 0632, WLCR via WBCQ SuperStition inbooming as some wacko is asserting that Man has never gone into space, let alone landed on the Moon: it was all staged for unknown reasons by the powers that were. What a pity that WBCQ has tied itself to this nonsense; surely as a Man of Science, Allan Weiner knows better but won`t contradict, disparage, or condemn his major client. Free speech! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. (7490.1v), et al., March 25 at 2359 via Maryland SDR, I`m checking all three WBCQ frequencies with offsets: 6160 - 56 Hz = 6159.944 at S8/S9+5, in fact with ACI from 6165 Cuba already on; 7490 + 70 Hz = 7490.070 at S9+5/15; 4790 +2 Hz = 4790.002 at S5/S7; nothing on 3265. Then I just listen on webcast: UT Saturday March 26 from 0000, `AAAWWW`, not a repeat, but many of the same `free speech`, pro-Trump points over and over. It`s a turbulent world. New Cold War? This would not be happening ``if the president were in the White House`` instead of ``a clown, an idiot, temporarily in power``. SW, especially WBCQ. more important than ever. SW is ``fancy AM``. Major news now is that A&A have already purchased two used 100 kW SW transmitters; as fund-raising continues. But shipping these heavy items is expensive --- ``a fortune``. He never says where they are coming from, why not?? Now in process to upgrade Classic WBCQ this summer. Wants to get a total of four additional transmitters. WBCQ is in fortunate position, totally O&O by A&A, no debt; remote Maine location with no NIMBY problems, WBCQ beloved by the neighbors. 0038 datestamp as 25 of March YOOLF 2022, 64 degrees in Studio 9. Vs coming storm urges everyone to upgrade SW antennas, such as the FPW. Verticals are better at minimizing powerline noise but need to be grounded. 0044 reading from new issue of FRW including YHWH item but he`s not sure which number is the time and which the frequency. 0050 picks some of his favorite shows from the 7490 program sked which Jason has sent. 0052 email. 0058 prayer. Almost 0101 JIP Hal Turner (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 4790, UT Monday March 28 at 0240, `Concert Hall` on R. Angela of WBCQ is playing Beethoven`s Ninth, finally arriving to the choral `Ode to Joy` movement about 10 minutes later, S5/S7 into Maryland SDR, and thankfully without the wideband whine which had been QRMing 60 m all over the east coast. But there are occasional uteblaaps of a few seconds each. At 0340-0348 I time them to find they occur exactly 4:00 minutes apart! So why??? By 0345 U. Bill is filling with a salsa version of Beethoven`s Fifth (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. (7490v), Monday March 28 at 2330, WBCQ webcast after secret semi-repeat of UBMP, `Camp Constitution Radio` starts without an extraneous intervening spot commercial after its opening theme (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9975, March 24 at 0640, KVOH is still on, song with guitar, S9+20/30. Sked revised March 16 http://voiceofhope.com/schedule/kvoh_program_grid.pdf shows SW sign-off at 0600* after `Song in the Night`. BTW, AWR Wavescan is now 0200 UT Sunday and Tuesday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9975, March 30 at 0625, KVOH still on with praise music in English, S9+10, rather than 0600*. I guess they turn off the transmitter whenever they get around to it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7505, March 27 at 0630, WRNO is gone again instead of all-night. Unknown if on at all earlier from 0100 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7505, March 28 at 0632, WRNO absent again; not noted yet whether on air at all earlier from 0100 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7505, March 29 at 0118, no signal from WRNO into Maryland SDR; indeed had been missing lately at nitemiddle chex direct, but also AWOL from nominal *0100 UT during DST (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9940, March 27 at 2207, WTWW-2 rock programming on here again, S9+45! Supposedly a WTWW-3 frequency (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. 9940, March 29 at 2250 after checking out WOR on WRMI 9955 at UTwente with huge rapid pulsing QRM, OTHR? I explore its approximate bandwidth: 9935-9965, peaks about 9940-9945 and a signal is barely visible/audible amid on 9940. Of course it`s WTWW, as soon confirmed direct in the clear at 2255, S9+15. So maybe that`s the target of such ``jamming``? It`s still clattering past 0048 March 30 recheck covering 9930-9960 into Maryland SDR, after WTWW is off. Ted recently got publicity on WSMV Nashville about how he is trying to cheer up Ukrainians with music, no news --- but now he`s outright preaching! 9940 has been active a lot lately in our afternoons, presumably aimed at Europe. WTWW hours are always to put it politely, flexible, so what about this on the WTWW.us website? Of course not! But https://wtww.us/pages/schedule.php does show a totally imaginary multi-lingual Bible broadcast on 15810 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Enough!! Lunging for the remote to mute the TV, at least once every hour for a couple weeks on CNN and MSNBC and probably many other channels. A car ad which starts with a kids` orchestra playing horribly out-of-tune ``Also Sprach Zaratustra``. I will not identify the car but swear never to buy one, if for no other reason.
