It is as if in September 1939 the government of Federico Laredo Bru (controlled by Batista) had shown solidarity with Hitler when he invaded Poland and unleashed the most devastating war in history. Flying in the face of all reason, given its location in the heart of the West, and its culture, Raul Castro has placed Cuba on the wrong side. Anyhow2, also a reason to remind that due to the imposition of stupid DST March 13, as a running dog of Yanqui Imperialism, Habana goes from UT-5 to UT-4, affecting most of their SW timings, causing consternation abroad where the clox are not, yet wrecked. Thus begins a Biweek of Confusion until March 27 when most of Europe change their clox and not coincidentally the A-22 SW season begins, prompting further time and/or frequency changes; but Cuba usually takes another week or two to decide what to do; while Mexico, Australia and NZ don`t adhere to either date. WORLD OF RADIO 2128 monitoring: confirmed Friday March 4 at 1915 on reactivated 7290, IRRS via Bulgaria. Tuned in earlier, 7290: 1859 carrier already on 7289.999, S9+45 into UTwente with 1377 users at the moment, but dead air until 1900.8 JIP Feature Story News, 1905 IRRS ID and UN News in Brief, then music fill. Harmonic 14580 not audible at UTwente or Carlow. 1323 kHz: first trying KiwiSDR at Tambov, Russia, just east of Ukraine and 418 km SSE of Moskva. Headed by this with translation: ``I see an extraordinary number of scripters. It's not good. I'll think about what can be done so that the network flood from them does not interfere with others. In the meantime, so as to cool the interest a little. All of this temporarily.`` This one at http://sdr.tambov.gq:8901/ is labeled as covering only 1.6-10 MHz! But is tuning 1323, where at 1906 at S9 I am hearing German only, i.e. the 15 kW Romanian station belying IRRS` claim to get into Ukraine and Russia on 1323. At 1908 I compare it to Noale SDR near 1323 where Romania now in music is mixing with IRRS music. At 1915 I can hear WOR starting almost synch with 7290. But at 1920, some horrible noise hits 7290, whine, roar with breakup, and I hear the same via Carlow, Eire SDR, so it`s not an SDR problem. At 1923 I can make out the same noise vs the other QRM on 1323, so it`s a problem on the feed from `Milano`. Via the Tambov SDR now at 1925 I am only hearing the music from Romania. The noise continues on both frequencies past 1930 when I quit in frustration. Recheck at 1959 finds 7290 clear with Ray Robinson talking about Philippines, so it`s AWR Wavescan until he`s chopped off for IRRS QSL offer which is also chopped off the air before finishing with address. A ~29 minute program cannot possibly fit into a ~15 minute slot, assuming WOR played to completion at 1944. Just a WS fragment as filler. At 2001 I recheck Tambov on 1323 and hear a 1 kHz tone, presumably Romania which has not turned off yet. Underneath is the Verdi theme of IRRS. Vice versa which dominates at Noale, Italy. At 2005, Feature Story News again detectable, but at Tambov more QRM in Hungarian: another Romania broadcast not in WRTH, I guess until 2100? Recheck at 2115, Romania finally off allowing AM Italia into Tambov, American English program about Black History, which turns out at 2120 to be `Counterspin` from FAIR, also on many US public radio stations; then about the Tulsa Race Massacre. At 2130 the next WORLD OF RADIO 2128 broadcast on 1323 can be heard both at Tambov and stronger at Noale. Later at 0040 UT March 5 I bring Tambov up again to investigate its tuning because as I noted earlier at 1800 March 4 it was blocked from tuning 9770 for BBC in Russian which was not on air anyway. It turns out that Tambov is blacked out for everything above 7200! The 40m hamband 7000+ works except for blox at 7045-7055, where we know there has long been a Russia/Ukraine ham radio war. I notice a user in North Carolina tries it briefly on 4625, the buzzer frequency, but that is also blocked. (7490.1v), UT Sat March 5 from 0100, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`, a new one, starts with Uranus joke, which can be seen just above the crescent Moon Sunday evening. Allan says that Moon ``rises`` just after sunset: axually it *sets* after sunset. Discussion of horses, horseless carriages. Wreck closed all 4 lanes of I-95; thank god for radio for info about it. Says WBCQ has 6 transmitters, the #6 one being the 9330. But there are only three other frequencies active, so what about the other two? Does that include the one Jeff White gave him? A new music show began tonight at 6-7 pm ET [23-24 UT] Friday, `Quality Control Live`. I missed the frequency so is it on the websked? Of course not! Electric bill expected to double in one or two years --- till a real president comes back. WBCQ is running at a loss. Lots of maintenance to be done this summer, postponed because of COVID. Would like to buy more antennas and stations, and not just for religious programming. Would welcome $5 or 10 million to do that, hint hint. Allan trying to avoid politix, but Angela can`t help it, blasts left-wing media, especially, under her breath, Rachel Maddow whom she can`t stand. Is convinced elexion was stolen. 0133, finally datestamp for those who just tuned in [why?], 4th of March YOOLF 2022, trimulcasting on 7490, 6160, 4790. Alan can`t take the cold in Maine, as when he visited in January for maintenance. 0136, plugs Radio Angela programming -- a neat name, Angela thinx. Tonight at 10pm ET it`s FTIOM [no, at 0340 check it`s Canadian Content Radio, S9+10 to Missouri SDR but with storm crashes from SE Nebraska, FTIOM from 0400 UT]; and at midnight [05 UT Sat], Glenn Hauser`s World of Radio, the last true program of listeners digest news emphasizing shortwave. Allan can`t remember when gh was not on SW. R. Angela is for entertainment, ``anti-political`` on SW only, no streaming. COVID diminishing, time to throw stupid masks away. Diet advice: avoid white food, like rice, milk, potatoes, and hydrate with lots of plain H2O, not juice or soda. 0147, for nth time, Allan claims that Canadian government does not allow any private ownership of SW stations! I reply equally nthly, what about CFRX and CFVP??? Except for the SuperStation, WBCQ tries to keep its equipment simple. 0150 items from Free Radio Weekly, just out. Finally catches himself that SSTV means slow-scan TV, not ``SSB`` TV. 0155 some email, 0159 prayer, 0201.7 JIP Hal Turner late. Standard disclaimer (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 4790, UT Monday March 7 at 0300 initial show of WBCQ Concert Hall on Radio Angela, Uncle Bill introducing, says may have guest hosts later as show evolves; tonight: Act I of Rossini`s Barber of Seville. Bill refers us to web for synopsis. I`m listening first via Maryland remote but there is that pulsing whine and occasional uteblaaps. To Missouri SDR it`s S8/+10, no whine but nearby storm crashes. Hunting around for best remote, my comments to WOR iog: Not so good - Traverse City MI gets storm crashes now at 0315 as would any in a wide area within hundreds of miles of the storm front from TX to IN centered over MO. CODAR also audible. I haven`t found a better one tonight. Wash DC area with less storm noise, no CODAR, but some other continuous whinepulsing. Brunt of signal is heading right into the storm area. Not making it at all to UTwente. Chris Smolinski provides seven Kiwis at Westminster MD. I`m trying 8074 which is pretty good but still with the DC-area whinepulse in the background. What is causing that?? It`s tempting to listen to `Encore` classical music on 5950 WRMI, stronger signal and higher frequency amounting to less storm noise, S9+10/35 into Missouri, starting with Poulenc, Les Biches. Back on 4790, Act I of BOS is over about 0435 and UB says Act II plays next week. To fill out the bihour tonight, some PDQ Bach starting with the 1712 Overture. But competition now from another BCQ, 6160, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. I`ve hinted in the past to Jeff White that he should put at least some NPR news on WRMI as a public service, offsetting crap like TOMBS, SMTV, etc., etc. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 15770, Monday March 7 at 2034, checking WRMI reception: MUF at 12 MHz at Nizhni Novgorod no good; S7-S9 into UTwente during BBB nonsense; good S9/+15 into PEI remote, better than direct to here way off the side of the NE beam from Okee. I`m preparing for WRMI`s new relay of VOA webcast-only `Flashpoint Ukraine` at 2105-2130, so I stick with PEI. A crowdfunding campaign bought the WRMI time, since VOA refuses to air this program on any of its scores of SW transmitters! See https://fundrazr.com/radiowaves?ref=ab_4cROT3YnWyI4cROT3YnWyI apparently headed by one Kate Neiswender, Esq., Lake Arrowhead, CA, US. Relay starts at 2100 with VOA News, the YL caster admitting at closing that she`s remote. Isn`t it about time to reopen the VOA Newsroom safely? `FPUK` in 25 minutes has a broad roundup of stories from within and without Ukraine, including outsourced from AP and Reuters. It may seem inadequate for those of us watching MSNBC & CNN wall-to-wall. And it`s M-F only: as we all know, nothing ever happens on Sat/Sun. Anchor Steve Miller says from next week, March 14, time for it will advance a sesquihour to 1935 UT -- obviously 60 minutes of it due to imposition of EDT instead of EST, irrelevant abroad. Can WRMI accommodate that? I asked Jeff and he says they shall, 1935 still on 15770. Miller utters ``ya/know`` over and over in an interview, as bad as Christiane Amanpour. He never mentions this being on SW now, unlike Steve Herman, W7VOA who twitted about it. For USAGM, SW is a low- priority almost-obsolete ``platform`` of possible use in the wilds of Africa. Last story at 2126 is about a cameraman who was killed when the Kyiv TV tower was hit, altho it did not collapse. By now the signal via PEI is fading down; as at 2130 WRMI reverts to R. Prague in French. R. Prague International was sacrificed for this but still has these other times on WRMI in English, per skedgrid: 1300/1200 except Sundays on 9955; daily 2330 on 5850; 0130 Tue-Sat on 5800; 0400/0300 daily on 9955; 0400 daily on 5800. Double/times with a slant refer to airings on Systems with an upcoming DST change. RPI is of course another station refusing to do any SW itself (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7780, March 9 at 0200, WRMI with R. Svoboda in Russian, instead of RAE in Portuguese, which continues on 5800 only, while the two used to be //. Svoboda is a test as prompted by the crowdfunding campaign. Seems to be all-talk and continues past 0230 for the rest of the hour. 7780 on NE antenna makes it OK S9/+15 into UTwente, but no signal at Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, remote which seems to be funxional, not blocked or jammed, but maybe too far: east of Moscow about the same distance as west of Moscow to the Belarus` border. Yet it`s still too early before local sunrises in Ukraine and western Russia. Shame on USAGM for being unwilling to employ any of its own SW transmitters for these. John Jurasek advises, ``Here's an update just posted to the Crowdfunding Page: "And, best news of the day; we have a first mainstream media publicity about what we all have accomplished. Congratulations to every one of you. This is your story: https://thehill.com/policy/technology/597411-grassroots-effort-uses-shortwave-radio-to-broadcast-voa-in-ukraine-russia "`` Hill writer Rebecca Klar just doesn`t get it, both in headline and body referring to VOA broadcasting on SW ``in`` Russia or Ukraine. The point is, this is INTO from outside, as it has to be. Richard Langley reports: ``This is the latest update from the campaign. Seems last night's broadcast was a test. "Thanks to WRMI, our one-hour test transmission in Russian (from Radio Svoboda -- Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) is on the air right now on 7780 kHz. (A clip below of the first minute or so with the station ID in English followed by the Russian programming as heard on the U.S. East Coast). "We are already getting solid reception reports from as far away as Poland so presumably it also being received in Russia, as well as the surrounding countries where Russian is widely understood. "We hope to start the daily transmissions in Russian soon, in addition to the VOA English program dedicated to Ukraine news which we began airing Monday. Meanwhile, `Encore` on WRMI is mostly simulmissed this time, and I see that the latest Playlist anyway has not yet been loaded to https://www.tumbril.co.uk/playlists I do hear the last dekaminute on 5850 via Knoxville, while Missouri is buried in storm noise, also audible at KXV. Only other feasible chance on WRMI will be UT Mon 0300 on 5950 --- exactly same time as début of WBCQ Concert Hall on 4790 Radio Angela. With so little classical on SW, a shame has to be at same time as Encore, but UB says it`s the best logistical time for him.
