UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS == Commentary == This week, the 2300th edition of Glenn Hauser's World of Radio is airing. This radio show is one of the best on shortwave radio today, is always informative and interesting, and we're happily acknowledging this milestone. In the WBCQ archives, there is a cassette of two episodes of "World of Radio Extra" that were aired on WBCQ in 1999. https://archive.org/details/classic-wor I don't think Glenn distributes his show to any stations via cassette anymore (Larry Will, June 20, Free Radio Weekly) Correct; thank you, Larry! (gh) ** ANTARCTICA [non]. Reminder that BBCWS annual mid-winter special to the British Antarctic Survey is June 21 at 2130-2159 UT on 5960 UAE, 9575 Ascension, 12065 - not 13810 which was tested a week ago, Woofferton. Original publicity gave the time as 1832 ``local`` - that is apparently really 1832 UT, but NO English SW frequencies are regularly scheduled at that time per HFCC - only 17830 Ascension -- but M-F only! Indeed, no 17830 signal into various remotes at 1851 Sat June 21. Maybe streamed, DAB. And HFCC shows except for this one occasion there are *no* BBCWS English SW frequencies on air between 2000 and 2200. No doubt we can hear it on demand later as well as previous ones on the programmme website. Or not: this site says ``this content is not available in your location`` https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3ct7zyv But this one looks OK: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct7zyv King Charles III is participating this time; otherwise the greetings come from family members, also with bits of music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA [non]. Midwinter special from BBCWS, June 21 at 2130: did not expect it to be listenable direct, way offbeam on all three frequencies, so fished around various SDRs closer to the target. Falklands offline. Best Goiânia, also Brasília.  Kiwi map shows one in the middle of ocean between RSA and Antarctica, but nothing about where it is except for coördinates. Does it have to be on any land? Here is how it`s labeled: Niendorf a.d.St. {whatever that mean} | Grid JO53HO21, ASL 72m, [map], SNR 29/25 dB Antenna: MiniWhip. The map leads to: 53-35-19.9S, 10-36-02.8E but still no name, and no land but the pin. Looks like closest known island. but not close enough, is extremely remote Bouvet, 54-42S, 03-36E. At first check 2127 it`s got something weak on 5960, nothing on 12065 or 9575.  At 2130, Brasília 12065 at S3/S6, as programmme opens about S Georgia. At 2135 I check direct: JBA carriers only on 9575, 12065. At 2139 I`m listening via Goiânia, 9575 S6/S8 is best of bunch but noisy. I`m just going to listen to it on web later. 2156 final check: about S Georgia, `Fisherman Blues` by The Waterboys -- lots of music but only snippets in limited time, and mention Bird/Byrd Island. Says 27 nations are represented, not just Britain, and also greets us listeners elsewhere. Hostess is Cerys pronounced Kerys, Matthews, and 9575 off promptly by 2200.  See my previous report for web linx. Now the ``OK`` one merely leads to the blocked one! Can anyone suggest another recording of the whole show? Off SW reception if necessary, but someone could download the studio file where it is available, and share it with us. Or is it ``available`` only in Antarctica? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** ANTARCTICA [non]. In the WOR iog, very useful replies to questions raised in my previous report: The remote in the middle of the ocean between South Africa and Antarctica: OOOPS, Kiwi map put it at latitude south instead of north! So, we have three versions: the SW version transmitted to Antarctica, the version that went out earlier on the BBC WS streams, and the podcast version. By the way, this year's program has special significance for us at the University of New Brunswick, as one of my colleagues participated in the Canadian science expedition to Antarctica on HMCS Mary Brooke earlier this year and did some unprecedented mapping of part of the ocean floor down there. What is that language? Also noted by John Figliozzi: ``No English tonight. Sounds like a man speaking in a language native to the Amazon region. All of which are 25 watts except 400 for IC, really? The 500 watts from SiouX Lookout ON makes the difference (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CANADA. 28168 CW, June 19 at 1551 just before trying for the Armstrong special from NJ on 42.8 MHz, even 10m is hardly open, nothing but a JBA beacon finally copied after multiple passes as: EEE VVV VA3KAH/B. Nothing listed on 12035 at any time by EiBi and Aoki. 12035 also confirmed after 1900 by Rudolf Grimm, Brasil, when it`s Woofferton. 9450, next frequency per above schedule, also had been unused at these hours per Aoki & EiBi: 9449.989-, June 20 at 1822, almost same offset at DHA/UAE, more presumed Farda, S9+10/20 into UTwente. At 1830, mentions of Iran and Farda (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** IRAN [non]. 12035.000, June 23 at 2213 direct, S8/S9 ME music, soon mention Farda and Iran. Much stronger than neighbor 12050 WEWN. At 2231 into Maryland SDR, VG S7/S9 with music, not news on the hour - of course, it is the nightmiddle there. Chopoff at 2259.7* during music. Yes, as now scheduled via Woofferton, per HFCC 1900-2300, 250 kW 90 degrees due east, so we are not directly off the back. 12035 is also via DHA, UAE site at 04-07 & 13-17 with 250 kW at 35 degrees from there. Kuwait should have been the preferred SW site if Trump had not forced it to close - almost? Monthly update from Association for International Broadcasting June 23: ``Meanwhile there's news about transmitting stations owned by the US Agency for Global Media. The relay station in Kuwait that was closed down in early June has been reactivated to allow 15 minutes of VoA {sic} Persian to be broadcast to Iran and neighbouring countries. It is unclear who is operating the station as the AIB understands a "manager" had been sent to Kuwait (presumably from Washington DC) to close the operation.`` To which I replied: ``15 minutes? Why bother? Time and frequency? source? Not in HFCC as of June 23. Of course we know that R Farda is back on air 24h via UAE, Woofferton. From what studio, Washington, Prague, or ??`` Full 24h schedule registered with HFCC as of June 20, first reported by Jean-Michel Aubier. These are all routed thru Encompass. Here it is in time order: 2300-0400 9620 (WOF) 0400-0700 12035 (DHA) 0700-1000 13710 (DHA) 1000-1300 15720 (DHA) 1300-1700 12035 (DHA) 1700-1900 9450 (DHA) 1900-2300 12035 (WOF) 9620, June 24 at 0226, VG S9+10 direct, folk song in English, ``Farewell, Angelina``, evidently by Joan Baez; radiofarda.com ID, more music. 0230 themes and presumed news, 0235 back to music. Website easily converts to English, but nothing there about any SW frequencies. BTW, Farda means tomorrow, very similar to the #1 nuclear site bombed, but I guess coincidental (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** IRAN [non]. 12035, June 24 at 2157, R. Farda, music S8/S9, surprisingly good direct way off-target from Woofferton (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** KOREA NORTH. 13649.93, June 23 at 1453, JBA carrier. Suspected UAE site in characteristic offfrequenciness, with WRN Russian relays, but that does not start until 1700. RF 17, K17JN-D, the 3ABN multi-channel satellator, Enid`s only local TV signal, is still OFF the air as of 16 UT June 24. Normally I tune across these hurriedly like the plague, but he was exulting in being widely heard from a European station on 1631 kHz, as he mentioned repeatedly. He got DX reports on that from as far as Brasil, Iran -- without aid of a remote? Who knows. Of course this was many years ago, but when, and what? In the x-band that should be a pirate. At 0158 I check Maryland SDR, and hear Hal Turner wrapping up with a gold/silver commercial, whilst 6160- is off the air, but // 7490-. But by 0200, 5130- is playing the generic WBCQ s/off. Evidently Turner has been moved from 6160 to 5130. Why doesn`t the sked show this correctly? Maybe he gave his name once; if so, I missed it, and can`t find it anywhere on website vosrinternational.com Location shown as Moloka`i, and he talked about driving across Kaua`i to visit WWVH. At least first semihour is a monolog, about scheduling, what he wants to do, etc. This is apparently a new broadcast. He says on 9455 has moved an hour earlier at 0300 instead of 0400. WRMI sked shows that is UT Saturdays, and there is another one? Fridays at 2300 on 5010. The 15770 is new once a month with repeats between; the 9455 one is alternate weeks - but still only repeats? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Re previous report: ``VOSR, at 2300 on WRMI 15770, is for Euro listeners; the guy hosting the show is known as WaveCrest Guy on YouTube, with monitoring samples from various receivers and with different antennas. Another great Hawaii DXer, following the lead of such notables as Dale Park from the 80s, and Dr Richard E Wood. It's a great spot for trans-Pacific SW and MW, if you have the right equipment for the task. Joe Hanlon, NJ`` - so his real identity remains hidden? So he`s a surfer? BTW, his website seems from some template with certain parts not filled in (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5830/6050, June 23 at 0213-0218, rough extent of splatter out of WTWW 5920, during TOMBS, pinned on that rather than 5850 or 5890, by matching modulation peaks on a second receiver; takes some doing vs high storm noise level out of west Texas, and/or Nebraska, Minnesota. Worst of course closest to 5920. First peak noticed 5955-5965 area, then 5975-5990, trailing off above 6000, and then traced downward to 5855 and the other side of WRMI 5850 to 5830 or so. QRMed/blocked by non-spur signals such as 5850, 5890, 5935, without which and HSNL it would probably be audible continually. The other WTWW not on 5085 tonight, and have not noticed it on for several nights now. No word yet from George about what may be the latest problem with that (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 9930, June 24 at 0128, TOMBS on WTWW is S9+40/50 direct, with JBA spur parasites plus/minus about 12.8 instead of 12.9 kHz, i.e. 9917.2 & 9942.8; but no splatter despite huge signal on fundamental. Continuing bandscan, by 0132 I find 5920 is on instead of 9930: is 0130 now the nominal QSY time? How old is this nonsense from Brother Hystairical? He happened to mention ``today, 7/31/08`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 10005-10019, 9840-9875, June 24 at 2208, approx. range of splatter peaks out of 9930 WTWW with TOMBS, which is S9+50 and somewhat overmodulatedistorted on fundamental, also with plus/minus 12.8 kHz parasitic spurs. Probably broader but at least not QRMing much if tuned directly to 9955, 9980 or 10000 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 7505, 9275, 5085, June 24 at 0130, these stations are NOT on the air when they are scheduled to be: WRNO, WMLK, WTWW (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5935, June 25 at 0622, this WWCR is OFF instead of all-night blasting DGS/PMS/TUN. Then I quickly discover 4840 is also OFF, having first checked 5890 whether it be off as it is supposed to be, unlike last night. So now, ALL WWCRs are off. What`s wrong?  At 1613, 13845 is on, 12160 is on with song ``Young Love`` during WW Country Radio, 9980 is off. Current websked shows WWCR-4 on 9980 is available ``13-01`` UT, meaning 12-24 UT, axual usage straight thru those hours is only on Sat & Sun, while on M-F, 9980 is ON only at 12-14 & 22-24. Of course this will all shrink to zilch if TOMBS axually quit radio after June 30. Has anyone found any explicit confirmation of such plans on website, direct from TOMBS, or mention on air? or more from Jeff White on Wavescan? As for `WW Country Radio`, a much-needed respite from all that politico-gospel huxtering, now sked: M-F 16-17 12160, Tue-Fri and Sun 05-06 4840. ``Ring of Fire``at 1621. These are real standards, so wonder if any `new` shows are being produced, or just recycling evergreens like `The Talking [sic] Machine Show` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. FCC website  https://www.fcc.gov/general/high-frequency-stations-seasonal-operating-frequency-schedules Now has a link to A25 schedules as of April 29, but axually leads to B24!  However if you edit the link to A25, there really is one at: https://www.fcc.gov/sites/default/files/A25FCC01.TXT Also updated on the WOR homepage. Strangeness: WTWW, finally has correct 5920 and 9930 instead of 5830 and 9940, but NOT 5085! And 12105 in case that ever reactivate third transmitter. Imaginary WWCR registrations: would you believe 124 entries? Covering intraseasonal time changes, and segments within a broader span. Frequencies not really in use now:  3195, 3215, 6090, 7390, 11775, 12180, 15795, 15825. 6090 & 11775 are ex-Caribbean Beacon, Anguilla; 3195 was necessary only when sharing 3215 with defunct WWRB. 12180 & 7390 presumably alternates in case of QRM to 12160, 7490. WRMI not in use: 9975, 17775, i.e. ex-KVOH. WJHR fixionally as 50 kW on 15555 as if AM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 15555 USB, June 23 at 1450, JBA talk in deceased gospelhuxter style, and not on LSB, so WJHR Milton FL. I was about to wonder if it were silent as not heard for a week or two in random daytime bandscans, at 1449 about to conclude that, until straining to hear it now. Can be much stronger if it get a sporadic E boost, which one would expect more often this time of year. Minimum legal power is 50 kW, but it`s always been much less from a glorified ham rig. WRTH 2025 page 596 says: ``1 x 0.25 kW (run at 1 kW PEP)`` How does owner George Scott Mock get away with that? ``Plans`` a 50 kW unit? Not in the WOR Hitlist but WRTH says website is: https://mytgibc.com/Missions.php i.e. ``True Gospel Independent Baptist Church``: ``WJHR Radio is a short wave radio station that broadcasts the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. The station has received letters from Russia, Italy, Germany and South America to just name a few. WJHR broadcasts nothing but preaching 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The station was built and is maintained by Brother Scott Mock who is a faithful member of True Gospel Baptist for many years. If you would like to support or desire more information you can contact Brother Mock through the church or at the radio stations email address: WJHR@ usa.com`` - I don`t think it`s ever been 24/7! Aoki shows 1400-2200, EiBi 1358-2200. That website does not explain that WJHR is a memorial to John Hill, who I think is the only preacher ever heard on WJHR. On Dec 31, *2008*, Benn Kobb reported to us: ``The applicant doing business as Hill Radio International is an individual, Scott Mock, WB4BFO, who plans to broadcast from his Milton, FL home. He proposes to use a custom-built transmitter and a four-element cubical quad antenna at 90 feet AGL. He told me that this station, which he hopes to name WJHR, will broadcast exclusively in single sideband. Thus, to the FCC application question of "rated unmodulated carrier power output", he answered "Zero". The stated emission type is B8E. He conceded that SSB broadcasting is unusual, but feels that there are enough SSB-capable receivers now and that his content will be compelling. He said the station would be a commercial operation, but would be funded mostly by "contributions from churches that support our beliefs." The programming will come from a 40-year collection of recordings made at Smyrna Baptist Church in Pensacola FL. You will recall that this church received its own construction permit for an HF station one year ago. There are several months left before that CP expires, but it appears that it will not be built and that WJHR is a new version of that project. In the license application, where the applicant must outline his "program plans and policies", Mr. Mock simply referred the FCC to that earlier Smyrna file "to avoid duplication." Benn`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 780, June 24 at 0640 UT, WBBM Chicago with `StarDate` -- if I`m awake and alert enough this late, a very reliable time for this 2-minute feature. WBBM.com leads to a TV station. For the radio station it`s https://www.audacy.com/stations/wbbm780 --- guess what, lots and lots of stuff there, but can`t find a plain old program schedule!!! And if you`re not careful, will get sidetracked to countless other Audacy stations. Located a search field but it can`t find StarDate with or without a space. As usual, 780 is an afterthought to 105.9 FM as the primary WBBM branding. The program website: https://stardate.org/radio/affiliates/state/illinois includes it under Illinois; I don`t know about the other times on WBBM AM & FM, but it lax this one! And it`s precisely at :40 past the hour, so the others probably are too. The first one would be correct if it were more than Monday and in CST during CDT and one minute earlier: ``Mon 12:41AM; Mon – Fri 3:41AM; Mon – Fri 9:41PM; Sat – Sun 8:41PM`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1320 kHz, June 21 at 0645 UT, KLWN ID in passing at tune-in. That`s U1 500/250 in Lawrence KS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1460, June 23 at 0223, South Asian singing atop the pile right now; equal on the N/S and E/W antenna implying it is not due any of the cardinal direxions. NRC AM Log shows the only one with such ``Asian`` format is KBRZ Missouri City/Houston TX, U1 5000/125 from the SSE; as this is not Vietnamese = KCLE Burleson/Cleburne TX and besides was silent as of 4/24. Of the 62 UStations on this busy `regional` channel, only one other is ``ethnic``, WBMS Brockton MA, 30 watts - I think not (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. ``Glenn, regarding your reception on 1460: That would be Sangeet Radio in the Houston market targeting the South Asian community. They also have an FM translator K236AR on 95.1. There are four FM translators with South Asian oriented programming here; you might also try for KGOL “Hum FM” which is running a 2kw days/100 watts nights STA on 1180, so critical hours might be a better time to try for that one. https://sangeetradio.com Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas`` - tnx; 1180 would be tough here with IBOC from 1170 KOTV, and the Cuban radio war (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 1650 kHz, June 19 at 0622 UT, Spanish audible underneath ``The Fan`` which is KCNZ in Iowa. Probably KBJD Denver, if not KSVE El Paso - no overnight tones from that heard in longtime but supposedly 24h with TUDN, per NRC AM Log (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 42.8 MHz, June 19 at 1556-1607 UT, no trace of a signal from the publicized Armstrong FM test from Alpine NJ, as in: https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/armstrong-broadcast-returns-to-new-jersey-in-june Never clarified whether this would be WB FM, NB FM, or not even FM! Tuning direct on the R75, however, without a specific VHF antenna. Sporadic E might have propagated it afar. At that time I was hearing only one ham beacon on 10m from Ontario; see Canada. Other reports of no signal on 42.8: Patrick Mannion, W1PAC, WOR iog at 1559: ``Listening on a nearby web SDR, so far nothing heard, not even signs of a warmup.`` Mannion at 1630 UT: ``Just got a carrier as of 12:30pm`` Arthur Pozner: ``Which SDR are you using?`` -- ``A friend's internet connected one, it was DM'ed to me on IRC. I don't think I'm allowed to share it.`` At 1617 UT: Mike Schaffer, WTFDA: ``Nothing heard in Easton, PA (FM20jq). Who is hearing it?`` At 1654: ``Armstrong Tower is 70 miles east-northeast of my location. Still not hearing it.`` Mike Bugaj, CT: ``Not hearing it and really wasn't expecting to. 100 miles NE with an APS13 not cut for 40 MHz. Heck I can't even get WNYZ 87.7 unless tropo is up. I would expect this to be a NYC area event.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 91.5, June 20 at 0330 UT, music and ID as ``Smile FM``, that Michigan station which has bought KSNS Medicine Lodge KS. Noticed during yet another fruitless bandscan for sporadic E FM DX, hopping all around us, above us but missing us at ground level (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) 91.5, June 21 at 1630 UT, gospel rock in mono, somewhat undermodulated but better than 101.7 sibling station, q.v. Now 91.5 is Smile FM out of Michigan. KSNS Medicine Lodge KS. None of this updated info yet in WTFDA FM DB (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 97.3, June 24 at 2110 UT, bandscan during possible Es opening encounters nothing except, ``continuous country Q97``, JBA. WTFDA FMDB shows four Q97s with various punxuation which are country, but cannot connect a ``continuous`` slogan to any of them even by searching websites. The most likely, groundwave Garden City, doesn`t play when I try to listen live, if I really wanted to listen long enough to hear them utter that exact slogan again. Anyhow, the possibilities: KKJQ 97.3 GARDEN CITY KS 100.0 kW 244.0 m KKJQ THE DAWG - COUNTRY Q 97 FM WKJQ-FM 97.3 PARSONS TN 6.0 kW 78.0 m COUNTRY Q 97.3 FM WUUQ 97.3 SOUTH PITTSBURG TN 16.0 kW 261.0 m COUNTRY CLASSIC COUNTRY Q 97.3 KNCQ 97.3 WEAVERVILLE CA 28.0 kW 1088.0 m COUNTRY Q-97 (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** U S A. 101.7, June 21 at 1627 UT, mono and very undermodulated talk about SCOTUS ruling on Trans, 1637 after break as `Washington Watch`, some gospel huxter network. KREJ Medicine Lodge KS. Sibling station to 91.5. UNIDENTIFIED. 1550.58, June 21 at 0643, JBA carrier hetting 1550s: rather than the `usual` 1549.82 presumed XEREL, could still be there, inaudible right now. Nothing so far away in mwoffsets (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 1560.11, June 21 at 0642, JBA carrier hetting 1560s such as Vietnamese KGOW TX. Nothing that far away in mwoffsets (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 6861 approx., 0153 UT June 22, repetitive musicalish notes, no carrier, can`t get a fix to resolve it in USB or LSB; pirate? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 9236.0, June 25 at 0617, weak open carrier direct, one of the mysterious group always ending in 6. Had been accompanied by clickery over a much broader range, but too much noise level to detect that now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 9340.4, June 25 at 0616, S6/S9 open carrier direct, while 9330 WBCQ is AWOL. Ditto at 1456 check when it`s a JBA carrier. What is this? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 11580/11585, June 23 at 0201 as I bandscan, encounter a very strong tone/carrier sweeping in this approx. range, then gone. What? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
