I think that is the first time I've heard a real ID from them! The usual mix of fun oldies both obscure and popular from the 1950s through 1980s, including many mentions of "the 80s at 8 on ZOOMER RADIO" and immediately into a 1963 Gordon Lightfoot tune that sounded more like a 1950s tune! These included the BBC, Voice of America, Radio Liberty, Voice of Israel, Deutsche Welle, Vatican Radio, as well as those socialist outlets that were critical of the USSR, such as Albania’s Radio Tirana and China’s Radio Beijing. Transmitter Station Number 5 was one of many secret, radio-jamming facilities throughout the USSR. Today, nearly 26 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, its past employees, still living in their original residences, are trapped in a time warp; their role as stalwart “guardians” against enemy propaganda now a thing of the past. Mostly communication specialists and radio engineers by training, the station’s employees essentially lived in isolation. A single mailbox (Mailbox Number 22) was their only way to communicate with the outside world. Guards controlled access to their fenced-in workplace. Although the workers were allowed to leave their settlement, they were not encouraged to do so. The settlement provided everything from a pre-school to a movie theater to ensure that the station’s employees had everything they needed without having to leave. They also were entitled to excursions and vacations several times a year -- all strictly supervised, yet free of charge The settlement was isolated not only physically, but also politically. The station received orders directly from Moscow. According to former employees, most officials in Georgia were not even aware of its existence. The employees followed a specific program schedule to jam the relevant radio broadcasts. In 1953, when Radio Liberty, a US government-funded broadcasting outlet targeting the Soviet Union, began operations and opened a Georgian-language service, the Soviet Union stepped up its game. The transmitter station started to serve not only as a censor, but also broadcast regular Soviet radio programs to Tbilisi-area audiences. Under no circumstances were the employees supposed to listen to the “anti-Soviet” radio broadcasts they intercepted. Today, however, most of those still living at Transmitter Station Number 5 confess they yielded to the temptation. Stations like Transmitter Station Number 5, however, managed to jam about 40 to 60% of Western radio broadcasts, estimated Ilia State University Professor Oleg Panfilov, who teaches the history of censorship and propaganda. Soviet-made shortwave radios, introduced in the 1960s, assisted the interference. [HOW??? gh] Nonetheless, information from Western radio broadcasts sometimes did manage to get through, recounted Panfilov, who recalls heading into the mountains of his native Tajikistan as a schoolboy to pick up the “enemy voices.” Soviet dissidents created a handwritten bulletin from the notes of people who had heard parts of these programs. Arrests for such activities were not uncommon. In the era of glasnost, those obstacles began to disappear. Jamming of foreign broadcasts ended in late 1988. After the collapse of the USSR three years later, Georgia’s Transmitter Station Number 5 only served as a regular radio transmitter station. It was later demolished and turned into a training center for the Free University, a private institution founded by the late State Minister for Reform Coordination Kakha Bendukidze. Former station employees, who still lived in the adjacent settlement, claim that they received no notice about the destruction of their onetime workplace. Today, the roughly 50 families living at the site complain that the Georgian government ignores them entirely, leaving them isolated and without their former benefits. To receive social-welfare benefits, they want local officials to recognize their settlement as a village or to let it become part of the nearby village of Bazaleti. Chkonia Afraniki, 80, Former Equipment Supplier “I came to work at the station right after my studies at Tbilisi’s Institute of Radio Communications. I spent most of my life here and even married a colleague. When the Transmitter Station opened, the first employees were mostly from Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic states. They had a rigorous academic and work background and were brought in to train young professionals from Georgia. At some point, I, too, was given the opportunity to further study in Moscow. In fact, at the time, we were often taken to Moscow and Leningrad for various workshops. Most of the first employees [and] trainers left Georgia within about three years. However, some stayed and even got married here. The transmitter [later] employed over 100 people in total from various parts of Georgia and the Soviet Union. Most of them stayed here for good.” Tsira Chkhikhvadze, 75, Former Radio Technician “Working at the transmitter station was a huge responsibility. Our work was strictly controlled. The station itself was right next to the settlement, but going there required extra security checks. I remember one time the local secretary of the [Communist Party’s] district committee visited us and even he did not know about what exactly our work entailed. None of us have ever had any photographs taken at work because it was forbidden. That said, we often went for workshops, excursions and vacations elsewhere . . . It’s a pity that today our hard work in this isolated place remains completely unacknowledged. Our current pension program [180 laris, or about $74, per month -- ed] does not take into consideration the number of years we have worked . . . anyway, who would have imagined that such a time [as today] would have come?” Aza Samniahsvili, 84, Former Senior Accountant “I still remember my very first day at work. It was September 9, 1955. I started out as a communications specialist, but later worked in various positions, including as an accountant. We had a wonderful life. We never had to leave the settlement. Everything was here -- a preschool, an elementary school, a movie theater, a hospital, a shop. Now everything is in ruins . . . Although listening to the enemies’ news was out of bounds, we still managed to listen in at times. It was really hard to both hear something and prevent others from hearing it, too. If we had been caught, we would have received strict warnings and our salaries would have been lowered for that month.” Dato Dolishvili, 53, Former Shifts Manager “I was actually born in this settlement. From a very young age, I always knew that this was not an ordinary village . . . My mother worked at the station and, eventually, I also became an employee there. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, the station continued to function as a transmitter of regular broadcasts. I remember that in the ‘90s, when the civil war first started in Tbilisi, [then Georgian President] Zviad Gamsakhurdia had to hide in a bunker. Although Radio Center in Tbilisi was occupied by the opposition military forces that were against him, they did not know about [the station’s] existence. But Gamsakhurdia did. He sent a recording of a New Year’s address for us to broadcast.” (via DXLD) ** GERMANY. OBSERVATIONS FROM A LISTENING PROJECT ON THE VOICE OF INDONESIA --- In the absence of their short wave service, one has to turn to the internet stream at http://cdn.voinews.id/streaming_en/id.html Unfortunately, I did not find a schedule for this stream (nor did I find one for their former short wave activities). The external service of Radio Republik Indonesia is not the only external service that fails to give its audience this most needed information. How to win or retain an audience without a published schedule for your broadcast that can also be shared remains the secret of these stations. As a result, the attempt to create a broadcast schedule has become a "listening project". Unlike the short wave schedule for 9525 kHz printed in the World Radio TV Handbook 2018, the internet stream runs around the clock. After monitoring the stream for about days, I have now closed the final gap and I can forward this 24 h schedule: 00.00 h UT Spanish. 01.00 h German (repeat broadcast). 02.00 h Dutch. 03.00 h French. 04.00 h English. 05.00-08.00 h Bahasa Indonesia. 08.00-11.00 h English. 11.00 h Chinese. 12.00 h Japanese. 13.00 h English. 14.00 h Bahasa Indonesia. 15.00 h Chinese. 16.00 h Arabic. 17.00 h Spanish. 18.00 h German. 19.00 h Dutch. 20.00 h French. 21.00 h English. 22.00 h Japanese. 23.00 h Arabic. These nine language were also used when the station was active on short wave. Some of these languages do not really sound the way they are known. However, it can be an advantage when foreign language content is not fully prepared and presented by native speakers of the respective language. You might even follow programmes in languages in which your skills are not fully developed. The speed of the French at Radio France International for example does not really care about non- native speakers. Returning to the Voice of Indonesia, in cases such as French or Spanish, I could follow the programme content. Bahasa Indonesia and English have the largest time slots, and in English, too, the programme output is greater than just one hour like in the other foreign language services. As a German, I was surprised to find an additional night broadcast for the German service: There are two German slots at 18.00 and 01.00 (repeat), and also two Dutch broadcasts at 19.00 and 02.00. Dutch is the latest broadcasting language introduced in 2017 (actually re-introduced). In station IDs in English and French, reference is made to 9525 kHz only. Most services stick to the fiction of three shortwaves in the station announcement, though they might actually know better. For example. the “about us” self-presentation on the German web site mentions only 9525 kHz. Listening to different languages for many hours reveals that much of the content is prepared centrally. But that is still better than having an editorial office only on paper and producing little more than music and station announcements. Common features include: news, commentary, historical events ("past and present"), cultural and tourist features and the language course. As you can see in the programme line up for foreign languages at http://voinews.id/index.php/broadcasting-schedule this is put into a very tight time management. But there may also be small differences like the content of the mailbag. The for me most obvious difference was the recitation of the Koran at the beginning of the Arab programme. It is difficult to judge whether this is generally expected by the audience in the Arab world or is also a problem to some listeners. There are also Arab Christians or Muslims practicing Islam only moderately. Compare for example Radio Cairo, where I observed the Koran recitation in the KiSwahili programme for East Africa not at the beginning of the programme, but at the end (Dr Hansjoerg Biener, 16 March 2018, WORLD OF RADIO 1922, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** IRAN. Help needed for Radio Luxembourg film documentary Luxembourg Times March 15 2018 Were you an avid listener and fan of the legendary Radio Luxembourg? If so, maybe you can help local film producers with an upcoming film documentary. In its heyday, Radio Luxembourg, or "the great 208" and "station of the stars", as it became affectionately known, reached 78 million nightly listeners. It was seen as a forerunner of pirate and commercial radio aimed at the UK. It eventually ceased broadcasting at the end of 1992. Now Luxembourg film company Samsa Film and the National Audiovisual Centre of Luxembourg (CNA) plan to revive the Radio Luxembourg story in a new documentary, seen from a Grand Duchy perspective. Full article here: https://luxtimes.lu/community/33144-help-needed-for-radio-luxembourg-film-documentary I should add that Luxembourg was definitely not a pirate - despite upsetting many in the UK establishment (see footnote in article)! - (Mike Terry, WOR iog via DXLD) ** MADAGASCAR. 17640, World Christian Radio (from KNLS) at 2000. Now, the WRTH 2018 lists *only 2*, XEN and XERG, but no attempt at schedule info in the by-frequency list; however, the NL04 station linked shows 12-07 UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)`` For what it's worth, I'm pretty confident that there are exactly 4 Mexican stations left on 690: XEWW, XEN, XERG and XEMA. XECS, XEXL, XEST and XEAFA have all confirmed to me via Facebook message in Sept-Oct 2017 that they have turned off their AMs. XETRN appears to have left AM before the nationwide FM migration started. Of the stations that remain, XEWW is my local 77/50 kW 24-hour pest here in San Diego, and I've got IDs from XEN and XEMA in my recordings from the last Border Inn DXpedition (Sept/Oct 2017). XERG has no FM to the best of my knowledge (there generally aren't enough FM slots available in the largest cities) so I am confident they remain on AM as well. XEMA was included on a list of stations the IFT ordered to stay active on AM since the FM would not cover one or more municipalities that the AM has been serving. Good luck with the identification of the likely harmonic on 2070. For what it's worth, XEN tends to run the anthem slightly before local midnight, and XEMA slightly after midnight. XEMA runs the full version (4 minutes 40 seconds). If I recall correctly the anthem on XEN is shorter. I'm not sure whether either of these two actually sign off after playing the anthem at Midnight (it's hard to tell because they are well under the other stations I was hearing on the channel). Hope this helps. 73 (Tim Hall, CA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) "...Now, the WRTH 2018 lists *only 2*, XEN and XERG..." -- What?!? No mentions of XEWW, which is quite alive & well over the two Californias?? I am going to do a piece on this at some point in the future. For instance, 95.1 and 98.5 were not allotted to Saltillo when I covered the open FM frequencies in that city a couple of years ago, but they now are available. XHDD's big upgrade is also reflected. XHSQB-FM 95.1 San Quintín BC (XEQIN), XHSEB-FM 91.7 San Sebastián-Las Margaritas Chis. (XEVFS), and XHPBSD-FM 95.9 Barrio San Diego-Tlaxiaco Oax. (XETLA) are on the air and simulcasting their AM counterparts. Confirmation is still needed for XHGJO-FM 88.3, which will simulcast XEGLO-AM 780 in Guelatao de Juárez, Oax., but it is likely to be on the air. All are Class AA stations co-sited with their AM counterparts (Raymie, March 18, ibid.) (It`s been a long time since I`ve managed to log anything thru KGWA, which used to facilitate that with a frequent 5-minute Fox-hole of dead air at local midnight.) But stepping 10 kHz on the DX-398 with offset USB BFO, it`s evident that the off-frequency station, slightly on the low side, is KGWA itself! I.e., a slightly lower het pitch from it than from stations on adjacent frequencies. So then I switch to the R-75 with max attenuation, no preamps to attempt to measure KGWA like I do for various SW stations off- frequency. Closest I come up with is 959.9955, i.e. 4.5 Hz or 3 sesquiHz below. Re 18-11, CHINA, 4790: Re - DXLD 18-10: 4790 kHz, Radio Visión? Hi Glenn, Ron, and all: I was hoping I kept the band recording if I made one, but apparently not. I am not 100% sure it was Spanish, although I thought I heard some Spanish words. At the time, the idea of having seen a recent log of Visión was present in my mind. I could easily have been wrong about that. I did wonder about it as the jammer on early. However, it didn't have any of the tonal qualities of Mandarin and just didn't have the usual flow of a CNR 1 broadcast. An argument in favor of CNR 1 would be that the band was hopping with Indian and other Chinese regional stations though! I guess I will withdraw the log, and put it in as "Unidentified" with unknown language since something was there. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll try to be more careful about these really uncertain ones (Mark Taylor, Madison WI, WOR iog via DXLD) No problem Mark. Was just the fact that Radio Visión has been silent for such a long time, would seem unlikely to return to SW again (but that would be very nice!!), whereas, for me, CNR1 jamming on 4790 is fairly common. Any comments or observations you would care to make would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Best regards, (Ron, cc to DXLD) Hi Walt, Sent off an inqury to Anatoly Klepov (Rus-DX), asking what was happening with Radio Rossii Kamchatka, on 5940 kHz. His reply below, which basically indicates the situation is unknown. Ron. "Thanks for your letter. About Radio Russii-Kamchatka. Officially there is no information on the broadcasting of the station at a frequency of 5940 kHz on the site of the station. Listeners - lovers of long-distance reception, listened to the station, but not constantly. In the Far East and Western Siberia, unfortunately there are no active DX-ers, which monitors the work of the radio station. Earlier on the SW in the region of Siberia and the Far East the station broadcast on short waves, when there were extreme circumstances - floods (in the spring) or fires (summer) on a large territory. I think, now the broadcast is connected with the presidential elections in Russia, which will be held on March 18. Will the station on the air after the elections can not say, since there is no information about this. In the new - A18 Updated Operational Transmission Schedule: http://www.hfcc.org/data/a18/index.phtml about the frequency of 5940 kHz there is no data. This is all that is known so far. Eslovaquia Internacional via WRMI on both at equal levels, good S9+10. It is interesting to observe how widely variable are the signals on these two at different times, not always equal either. Current skedgrid shows 9455 duplicates 9955 at these hours: 02-03, 11- 14, 22-23. See the 9955 sked at http://www.tinyurl.com/WRMI9955 for what programs get to be on both: At 02-03 it`s hardly anything but Praga and Bratislava in Spanish. 13-14 & 22-23 include some media shows. 9395, March 17 at 2230, WRMI Oldies just starting VOA News, as if it were scheduled on the half-hour, but surely a random hit. 9395 // 9455, Sat Mar 17 at 2301, WRMI with `Your Weekend Show`. Meanwhile, 9455 also continues secret airings of Radio Eslovaquia Internacional. ALL these times for YWS, WS and REI cannot be found on any of the three versions of WRMI schedules! 9455 // 9395, Sunday March 18 at 2319, WRMI with `AWR Wavescan`, WWCR`s Jerry Plummer interviewed at Kuala Lumpur in January, says PMS is committed to keeping ANGUILLA on the air; WWCR CE Phil Patton and three people from TUN went to the island to work on the station, got to stay in a hotel still without power but also providing three meals a day. JP himself hasn`t been to Anguilla. A-18 AWR WS times on VOH stations, per Jeff: KVOH, Saturdays 1530 on 17775, will be an advance of the new episode each weak officially released on Sundays (presumably already the case). So if you catch it then, you can ignore the dozens of repeats on WRMI, including this one, Sunday 2300, which is secret, not shown on WRMI skedgrid, just `Oldies`. WS is shown at this time as on 7780, but it`s too weak to compare. The 24-hour Oldies frequencies really entail *lots* of opt- outs for YWS, WS, REI, etc. They are certainly programmed into the playouts, so why not accurately published? 7730, UT Monday March 19 at 0603, WRMI is on early, VG with World Music (?), supposedly not until *0700-0900 Sunday & Monday only, including `Broad Spectrum Radio` at 0700 Mondays // 5850 but 5850 is not on yet. This hour is an ``available time slot``. 7490+, UT Fri March 16 at 0130, surprised to find this WBCQ on air after 9 pm ET --- and it`s Blalock the Blaster, who is already on 9330 (I assume, still) at 00-01 UT most nights. No, this is not shown on the websked, 7490 supposedly off air between 01 and 20 UT Fridays. 7490+v: Tnx to WBCQ being beholden to DST clox, it now makes `Behaviour Night` compete with VOA`s `Afropop Worldwide` [q.v.] during this same real hour, Friday 2100-2200 on 15580 Greenville. I try 7490 too, but reception is already too noisy, so far into the dayside. At this distance, we may not expect good reception again until November when it revert to 2200-2300 UT, and also after sunset. It`s too bad that excellent shows like this will not be put on the 500 kW transmitter. Maybe at least profits from that enterprise will allow incremental improvements to the other outlets? Or there may not be any profits, if it`s simply in service of whatever religious broadcaster is funding it. And since that will obviously come out when it`s all done, why keep it secret now? (7490), UT Sat March 17 from 0000, WBCQ webcast starts with almost dead air, but some talking I can`t make out, before `Allan Weiner Worldwide` ``William Tell Overture`` theme starts. This usually happens, I suppose a delay imposed by switching/cuing to Studio 9 feed from Deland of Fla. Allan starts by railing against midgets, huh?? Over to John Carver for the rest of the story: ``Listening on 5130 this evening. Theme music started about twenty seconds late. Over the theme music Allan's words for the week were such things as munchkins, midgets and dingbats. In studio 9 in FLA with Angela, Allan is outraged over a magazine article stating that midgets molested Judy Garland during the filming of the Wizard of Oz. Says it has made it impossible for him to ever enjoy watching the movie again. Blames it on the dingbats who want to besmirch everything in this country's past including the founding fathers, the civil war, TV and movie stars of today. Said they referred to the founding fathers as oversexed slave owners. He stated that the movie was a classic, an icon. Related the story about the first time he saw the movie on TV when he was young. He wonders when they're going to attack Gone With the Wind. He announced that the station is out of money again and that donations are down. Says he has had to cancel the snow removal at the station as the guys running the plows keep raising their rates. Told Tom at the station to dig himself out as there will be no more snow plowing this year at the station. Commented that the snowfall is fifty-eight inches over last year's snow. In a surprise statement, he referred to Angela as his beautiful mate instead of beautiful girlfriend. Started reading of older emails at 0027. Read messages about the death of an AM station, news that Gates is ceasing production of AM transmitters and that iHeart Media has filed for bankruptcy. After that, Allan announced that he's been granted a permit for an FM translator for his AM station along with descriptions of the AM and FM services he offers to the local area. Reading of current emails began at 0055. Quick prayer at 0058. No phone calls this evening and program was off the air at 0100. (Lou KF4RCA Johnson, March 15, to WBCQ, cc to DX LISTENING DIGEST) No reply received from WBCQ. Can anyone else answer this? (gh, WOR iog via DXLD) Glenn. Just sucking this out of my thumb but when I heard the release, that thought crossed my mind and I figured if the mystery client has pockets deep enough for big transmitter, fancy antenna, new buildings etc, then they wouldn't blink an eye at building a substation near so they could get three phase power (John Carver, DX LISTENING DIGEST) That was the first thing I thought of when I looked him up on Google Maps and saw the incoming power lines ;) But I think I remember Alan mentioning a generator a year or two back during one of his shows. Seems the expensive way to produce 500 to 1000 kW, though. Any guess who the "private investor" is? ;) (Paul Goelz, Rochester Hills, MI, http://www.pgoelz.com WOR iog via DX LISTENING DIGEST) At the SWL fest this year, there was a representative from WBCQ and it was mentioned that generator(s) would be utilized. Questions arose about other alternatives (solar, wind, etc...) The answer was that other forms of power are being discussed (Chris Peters, ibid.) I had a quick Google and a 750 kW diesel generator at 3/4 power consumes 39.3 gallons per hour. So: Purchased power ----- 500 kW at (say) $0.10/KWh is $50/hour. Diesel generator ---- 39.3 gallons at (pick a number?) $2/gallon is $78.60/hour. No more cheap air time for WBCQ (Paul Goelz, Rochester Hills, MI, ibid.) The cost per hour could be significantly more - depending on the transmitter efficiency. 500 kW out could require a bunch more input power. This link for a typical modern tx - http://www.riz.hr/en/transmitters/short-wave/transmitter-500kw.htm indicates ~72% for this model. Older models will be even lower efficiency (Don VE6JY Moman, ibid.) Yeah, I decided to ignore efficiency when I did my back of the envelope calculations. Heck, I even wondered where he got 50 kW worth of power, let alone 500 (Paul Goelz, Rochester Hills, MI, ibid.) "In North America, individual residences and small commercial buildings with services up to about 100 kVA (417 amperes at 240 volts) will usually have three-wire single-phase distribution, especially in rural areas where motor loads are small and uncommon", says Wikipedia. Pretty unfamiliar for continental Europe where three-phase supply is the norm on all but the smallest residential houses, but so far possible. But a 500 kW transmitter is a different affair. The Continental model to be used calls for: "4160 VAC, or 11,000 VAC, 3 phase, three wire, 50/60 Hz; other voltages on special order. Mains power requirement is 650/1200 kW with 100% tone modulation condition at ò 0.95 lagging power factor." Such facilities need a three-phase connection to the medium voltage grid. Setting up a 500 kW transmitter away from such lines and running it on generators is plain madness, in particular when considering the size of the potential audience (now, in 2018, of course). Someone must have lots of money to burn here (Kai Ludwig, Germany, ibid.) In light of Allan Weiner's glowing statements in support of "Brother Stair" after his most recent arrest --- see http://overcomerministry.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Alan-Weiner-Testimony-of-Bro-Stair-Revised.mp3 I can't help but wonder if one of Stair's big money donors is behind this (James Branum, OK, ibid.) On "Allan Weiner Worldwide," 9 March (10 March UT), Allan mentioned that he has arranged with the local power company for a special line from the substation (Kim Elliott, ibid.) Glenn. Read the recent thread concerning single phase vs three phase. Saw Kim's statement that Allan said the client was running in a line from the substation. I can neither confirm or deny that as I did not hear that statement. Doesn't mean it wasn't said, just that I didn't hear it. Without hearing the statement I would never argue with Kim Andrew Elliot (John H. I want to know where YOU buy gas if $1.33 will get you a gallon! I suppose if you talk about the NUMISMATIC value of a silver dime, you can get to close to $2.50, but those 'thin dimes' have been worn such that they probably aren't really worth that much in either silver or numismatic value -- unless it is an 1894-S in MS-65 condition of course! ;) -kvz (ed. IMPROVED DIAL --- Dxing conditions here in NE Tacoma have improved recently: 850 - KHHO has dropped IBOC 1090 - KFNQ has dropped IBOC 1210 - KMIA has dropped night power to 220w (CP but I think they have done it) 1240 - with KKOL off, the created KKOL/KKMO image here is gone (2 x 1300 = 2600-1360 = 1240) 1250 - KKDZ is moving its night XR an dropping to 3.6 kW nights. Its IBOC is inconsistent; it does not appear to be on at night. 1300 - KKOL is off the air and has applied to move its XR north and cut night power to 3+ kW. That’s the good news. The other news: 830 - while KSTP-1500 is in most nights, I have never been able to hear WCCO. Instead, thanks to a KIRO/KTTH mix, I get KIRO (2 x 770 = 1540-710 = 830) and occasionally KNCO. 1300-1500 - I am about a mile away from the KKOL XR and it splatters over much of this range. LOW-POWERED COMMUNITY RADIO IS PROVING TO BE A POWERFUL VOICE --- People are using it to inform, educate and spark change near home. Starre Vartan, March 8, 2018, 9:32 a.m. https://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/blogs/low-powered-community-radio-powerful-voice A young woman wearing headphones and speaking into a radio mic There's something more personal and grassroots about local radio. (Photo: zhu difeng/Shutterstock) [caption] In the 1990 movie "Pump Up the Volume," Christian Slater plays a high- school student who uses pirated airwaves to create change in his community. Over his evening-only radio show, the teenager calls attention to the fact that his high school's administration is kicking out pregnant and lower-performing students to boost its reputation. He successfully exposes the school's nefarious principal and gets her sacked — along the way, he deals with teen suicide, homophobia and parents who just don't understand. That's the memorable "whole world is longing for healing" clip below. Fast-forward to 2018, where people are once again turning to community radio to inform, educate and — like Slater's character — spark change in their communities. The difference is that they're doing it via legal, low-power FM stations (LPFMs), which are now broadcasting in small towns and urban areas across the United States. These micro-stations are picking up listeners and influence, but it's taken years of effort to get to this point. Community radio vs. corporate giants LPFMs are only allowed to operate at a maximum of 100 watts, which means the signal travels just 3 to 5 miles. Broadcasts must be commercial-free. (Photo: Forest Run/Shutterstock) [caption] Back in 2000, grassroots organizations pressured the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for community access to the airwaves. But corporate broadcasters fought to restrict low-power radio, and after a decade of battles the Local Community Radio Act was finally signed into law in 2011 by President Barack Obama. By late 2013, more than 2,800 groups had applied for licenses. Licenses have been issued since early 2014, and as of January 2018, 1,978 licenses have been issued, according to noncommercial radio advocacy site, Radio Survivor. Washington state, Oregon, and Florida have the highest number of stations per capita. LPFMs are only allowed to operate at a maximum of 100 watts, which, depending on topography, generally means the signal can travel about 3 to 5 miles. Broadcasts must be commercial-free. To get a license, applicants must be nonprofit organizations, which includes schools, libraries, emergency services, tribal and religious groups, as well as anyone who wants to volunteer to create a station of their own. About a third (around 850) of the LPFMs are religiously affiliated, but the rest are what many of their licensees proudly call "alternative." "The fact that we have gathered ourselves up by our bootstraps and created a community radio station is in direct response to the ownership concentration of large media companies," Rebecca Webb, founder of the Portland Radio Project, KSFL 99.1, told the New York Times. Her project, like many, broadcasts from a disused space — a couple of rooms over an old silent-movie theater. Others send signals from basement rooms, back porches and even mobile stations. New stations are popping up with regularity. Seattle has no fewer than six community radio stations that have debuted recently, each with a number of contributors. (These are via licenses that were applied for in 2013; the application process for new licenses is closed.) "It’s an unprecedented time in our radio history when we have so many stations getting on the air at the same time," Jennifer Waits, the social media director at Radio Survivor, told the New York Times. What you'll hear What can you hear on LPFMs? Well, plenty of them have streaming Internet radio broadcasts alongside their local broadcasts, so you can check them out that way. And find a full list of all the stations in the U.S. here. Some of them play religious programming, others talk shows, and some play music — especially music you won't hear on other stations. Like Zydeco, which is popular in Louisiana, where it's played on KOCZ. And in at least one case, a local, low-power station has been a lifeline — after Hurricane Katrina, WQRZ in Mississippi broadcast crucial information about food, shelter and fresh water. You can see more about this in the video above via Prometheus Radio Project, another LPCR advocacy organization. While writing this article, I listened to a show called "Hello Cruel World" from a KXRW out of Vancouver, Washington. They played folk and rock music, then there was a show called "Ghost Chapel," which (according to their website) features "A mixed bag of nutz with indie rock jams, shoegaze, folk, unreleased tracks, concert previews and festival favorites. We’ll bring you up high and light, and then down low and gloomy when you’re in the Ghost Chapel." I loved what I heard. If you remember the days of radio DJs with personality, this is much closer to that than the boring commercial DJs you hear on the bigger stations. DIY community radio If you're interested in not just listening to but helping a local radio show, you can check in with an existing LPFM station near you by checking the list above. Again, you can't start a new station, but that doesn't mean you can't participate. What would your radio show be about? Local sports, your favorite obscure music genre, a hobby or interest (sci-fi or comics perhaps) or just a philosophical ramble of sorts about life? It's up to you. As Christian Slater's character says at the start of his radio career in "Pump Up the Volume," it doesn't have to be serious: "[I'm] here to remind you to eat your cereal with a fork, and do your homework in the dark." A normal-voiced man ends the loop seemingly identifying that it's one in a series of lectures by Michigan State University. Here is what I could copy of the loop from Friday. Chief Product Officer Rich Redmond replied: “Recent changes in the long-term availability of critical components from our suppliers, including several last-time buy notices, have caused us to take proactive steps to ensure we can meet our continued support obligation of our AM products,” he said. “To safeguard our ability to offer an ample supply of spare components — and to secure the ongoing field support of our AM transmitters — GatesAir has taken the responsible step of suspending new AM transmitter sales, and will instead focus on supporting existing customers’ transmitters with our available components.” He said warranty, field service, phone support, spare parts and repairs continue as normal for GatesAir AM products. Flexiva DAX, DX and 3DX transmitters all had a number of obsolete components that influenced the decision. “GatesAir is currently in the advanced technology assessment phase for the development of an updated line of AM transmitters,” Redmond said. Arctic auroras are likely on the first nights of northern spring. Free: Aurora Alerts Also a surprise storm: on March 18th, a crack opened in Earth's magnetic field. Solar wind poured in, fueling a moderately strong (G2- class) geomagnetic storm. http://spaceweather.com/ (via Mike Terry, March 20, WOR iog via DXLD) EQUINOX CRACKS IN EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD The vernal equinox is less than 10 days away. That means one thing: Cracks are opening in Earth's magnetic field. Researchers have long known that during weeks around equinoxes fissures form in Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind can pour through the gaps to fuel bright displays of Arctic lights. Even a gentle gust of solar wind can breach our planet's magnetic defenses. This is called the "Russell-McPherron effect," named after the researchers who first explained it. The cracks are opened by the solar wind itself. South-pointing magnetic fields inside the solar wind oppose Earth's north-pointing magnetic field. The two, N vs. S, partially cancel one another, weakening our planet's magnetic defenses. This cancellation can happen at any time of year, but it happens with greatest effect around the equinoxes. Indeed, a 75-year study shows that March is the most geo-magnetically active month of the year, followed closely by September-October--a direct result of "equinox cracks." NASA and European spacecraft have been detecting these cracks for years. Small ones are about the size of California, and many are wider than the entire planet. While the cracks are open, magnetic fields on Earth are connected to those on the sun. Theoretically, it would be possible to pick a magnetic field line on terra firma and follow it all the way back to the solar surface. There's no danger to people on Earth, however, because our atmosphere protects us, intercepting the rain of particles. The afterglow of this shielding action is called the "aurora borealis." The only numbered regions were 2701 (S12, L=99, class/area=Axx/10 on 15 March) and 2702 (N22, L=109, class/area=Bxo/5 on 17 March). Neither region managed any flare activity. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 16-18 March. Normal levels were observed on 12-15 March. Geomagnetic field activity reached G2-Moderate storm levels on 18 March and active levels on 14-17 March due to the influence of a negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet to unsettled levels were observed throughout the rest of the week. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 19 MARCH - 14 APRIL 2018 Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be high levels on 19-20, 22-26 March, and 12-14 April. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the rest of the period. Geomagnetic field activity is likely to be at G1 (Minor) storm levels on 19 March and 12 April with active periods likely on 20-24 March and 11, 13-14 April, due to effects of multiple recurrent CH HSSs. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2018 Mar 19 0555 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2018-03-19 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2018 Mar 19 69 21 6 2018 Mar 20 68 12 3 2018 Mar 21 68 18 4 2018 Mar 22 68 18 4 2018 Mar 23 68 18 4 2018 Mar 24 68 15 4 2018 Mar 25 68 8 3 2018 Mar 26 68 5 2 2018 Mar 27 68 5 2 2018 Mar 28 68 5 2 2018 Mar 29 68 5 2 2018 Mar 30 68 8 3 2018 Mar 31 68 8 3 2018 Apr 01 68 5 2 2018 Apr 02 68 5 2 2018 Apr 03 69 5 2 2018 Apr 04 69 5 2 2018 Apr 05 70 5 2 2018 Apr 06 70 5 2 2018 Apr 07 70 5 2 2018 Apr 08 70 5 2 2018 Apr 09 70 5 2 2018 Apr 10 70 8 3 2018 Apr 11 70 15 4 2018 Apr 12 70 20 5 2018 Apr 13 70 15 4 2018 Apr 14 70 15 4 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1922, DXLD) SPECTRUM ABOVE VHF IS WHERE THE FUTURE FOR RADIO COMMUNICATIONS LIES Southgate March 17, 2018 http://www.southgatearc.org/news/2018/march/spectrum-above-vhf-is-where-the-future-for-radio-communications-lies.htm#.WrD1aajFLIU Radio communications started off on long and medium wavelengths, first on Maritime Mobile spark transmissions and years later followed by AM Broadcasting. After radio amateurs discovered Shortwave DX communications the commercial world rushed down to Shortwaves too to make their worldwide transmissions. In time commercial stations realized that they needed more bandwidth to operate their TV stations and FM Broadcasting stations, which was then available on VHF. With the advent of commercial satellite operation, DSTV became possible on the Ku Microwave bands. But for a small group, most radio amateurs were reluctant to explore these higher frequencies except for repeater operation on VHF. Fortunately, there were several overseas amateurs who ventured to experiment on the microwave bands even as high as the Terahertz spectrum. What has now become clear is that (amateur) DX can be worked almost daily on EME when the moon is visible, using small portable dishes, low power and digital on microwave frequencies, which could be a boon for townhouse EME operation -- SARL (via Mike Terry, March 20, DXLD) ###
