Radio Tirana with awful modulation and distorted audio, July 20: 0700-0900 7390 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to WeEu Albanian Daily, relay HS-1 http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.bg/2016/07/radio-tirana-with-awful-modulation-and_20.html -- 73! (Ivo Ivanov, Sofia, B`lgariya, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 9855, July 22 at 0130, R. Tirana is OFF tonight. I will not speculate further on whether it`s permanent or whether this imply any repairs are being undertaken. 9854.95, UT Sunday July 24 from *0125:14.5, R. Tirana comes on with IS, and FINALLY some good news to report: much less humroar than there has been, still some continuous motorboating and lite hum and with BFO the carrier is wobbling slightly. But program modulation is atop it. (I did not check last night.) 0130 sign-on with schedule of the only two English broadcasts --- did she say Tuesday-Saturday instead of -Sunday (UT) at 0130 on 9855? All the announcing is by Klara, and to understand her 100% we need near- perfect reception, which this is still not. 0131 news starting with something about the judicial system; thanks for support from USA; 0138 next segment is something ``of the week`` about 3.4% economic growth in 2016. 0143 time for music, introduced, 0144 the music. 0152 another announcement and another song. No sign-off heard, but off at 0157:45* (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 7389.971, Usual Albanian language morning service from Radio Tirana, Albania noted again on DISTORTED audio signal. Some main 6 x 100 Hertz 'apart distance' signal strings visible, and also minor a lot of more 50 Hertz apart distance audio signal strings. This is an evil broth hearing, - listen to the recording in mp3 format. Depending of some remote SDR units antennas in use, the signal is in S=9+10 to S=9+25dB range here in central Europe, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, or Italy. Checked at 0750-0820 UT on July 24. 73 wolfy df5sx (Wolfgang Büschel, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 9855-, July 24 at 2348 check, very poor signal from R. Tirana in Albanian, but can tell at least that it`s still hummy. 9855-, July 26 at 0127-0134+ no signal from R. Tirana, so presumed it isn`t going to show at all (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ANGOLA. 4950. July 26, 2016. 0334-0344, R. Nacional de Angola, Mulenvos, in Portuguese. Re: Radio Mi Amigo via Armenia now on air --- Very good signal via the U. Twente SDR, peaking to more than 30 over S9. We'll see if anything makes it to NB when I get home in about an hour (Richard Langley, 1740 UT July 21, dxldyg via DX LISTENNG DIGEST) Heard 1820 via UTwente, 11850 (presumed) (Liz Cameron, MI, ibid.) A fairly decent signal on 11850 kHz here in NB, in the Canadian Maritimes. Peaking to about 30 dB-mu on my Tecsun PL-880 with a 7 m longwire outdoors. Anyone else in North America able to listen? (Richard Langley, 1833 UT July 21, ibid.) R Mi Amigo's Armenia site on 11850 heard using remote site in Brisbane Australia from 1733 tune. Poor to Fair at tune in, improving to solid. Fair around 1800 then slipping again to only poor by 1830 tune out. Brief transmitter interruption at 1800 but less than a minute outage. Format more discussion than music in this time slot (Bruce CHURCHILL, CA, 1842 UT, ibid.) 11850, July 21 at 1914, I check for the Radio Mi Amigo special barbecue and broadcast live from Kall-Krekel, Germany, as widely publicized to be relayed to ``the world`` via Gavar at 17-20 UT today --- as expected, way over here in deep North America, nothing but a JJBA carrier, but that`s something. At 1947 I`ve switched from the R75 to the NRD545, and now detect some talk at S 0 to S 0.5 vs noise level of a hefty S1 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) And open carrier / dead air from 1900 UT. Videos after few minutes (Ivo Ivanov, Bulgaria, 1914 UT, ibid.) 11850, Radio Mi Amigo, via Gavar/Yerevan, *1658-1710, 21-07, tuning music, English: "Hello, this is Radio Mi Amigo", identification in several languages, "This is Radio Mi Amigo International live..., 100 kW from Armenia...", "Welcome, Bienvenido", pop music. Good signal. 34433 (Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Logs in Reinante, Sangean ATS-909X, Cable antenna, 8 meters, ibid.) A good signal here in the NW of England on 11850, peaking to 10 dB over 9 on my S meter, but with fading too. The audio quality leaves a little to be desired, but not bad considering the programme is apparently coming from a studio in Germany. Paul Newman(?) now at 1720 UT talking about AM pirate stations - particularly R. Northsea Intl. Also announced to be using 6005 from Germany. There is a station on there but too weak to tell if it's // 11850 (Noel R. Green, England, July 21, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) There was a second "black out" of the Gavar transmitter at 1859 UT lasting some 30 seconds. Signal on 11850 kHz was extremely good. In the first hour S9+20~S9+30, from 1800 UT onwards signal strength increased to S9+40, partly S9+45. I used the 90 /270 Inverted V antenna. 73, (Manfred Reiff, Germany, 1937 UT, ibid.) At present, 1938-1939 UT, there was another loss of the programme. Now, at 1941, the programme is on air again. Radio Mi Amigo International is audible on 6005 kHz with good signal without any interruptions. 73, (Manfred Reiff, ibid.) Christian, also always a strange sound 'tack, tack, tack' of an mobile phone set on transmitting procedure heard in background of the Amigo program and your carillion 'Glöckchen' FINAL interval signal. 73 wb df5sx (Wolfgang Büschel, 2022 UT, to Christian Milling of RAI, DXLD) Listening to both my local and U. Twente recordings, there was an extensive loss of audio on 11850 kHz between roughly 1900 and 1940 UT. Carrier still seemed to be on the air so something happened with the real-time audio link between Germany and Armenia. When the audio came back, it didn't seem to be quite as good as that before the break. Towards the end of the program, my real-time reception report was mentioned but it seems no one knew where Fredericton was (or Frederictown as they also called it). ;-) I guess I should have sent along my usual e-mail signature block (see last line): ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | Richard B. Die Zielgruppe von SmartCast sind die Hobbysegler westlich der Bretagne. The target group of SmartCast are the recreational sailor west of Brittany. Currently only the SW is used. A MW transmitter is however already prepared. Location Quimernec'h [sic] in Western Brittany. Once the CSA project has agreed, it goes on the air. CSA is, authorities which issued in France broadcasting authorizations. What I find is not really clear whether MW here the bond between 520 and 1600 kHz means or whether because the tape above the conventional broadcasting band is meant. I would rather tap the latter owing this field was until shortly yet used filters of Kuenstenfunk [artistic broadcsting??] Seewetter reports will be sent for content and also a broadcasting program. Currently RFI is broadcast, but RFI itself has little to do with SmartCast. Actually, it is a pure TDF project. So could otherwise a program be sent, for example, France Inter. The project belongs also the production of a video receiver, the program can decrypt. As I see it, there is no software decryption. Only the hardware of the independent video receiver can receiver SmartCast. I think they need this project in connection with the 31 Dec. closing of LW broadcasts, because at the time, the sea weather reports will only be broadcast from Allouis on 162 kHz. Both licences have already been prolonged once and another prolongation is not possible, instead a new allocation procedure necessary. Still MABB is required to "appropriately" consider the interest of a broadcaster to stay in business. Thus they must have really good reasons for taking away a frequency. They tried once, with Radio Paradiso, the station of the Protestant church they considered having become too commercial with too little spoken content, which to a certain degree was true because some people in the Protestant church wanted Radio Paradiso to fund itself entirely from advertisement incomes. Which simply do not suffice for an expensive operation with lots of editorial force. But MABB used a poorly researched expert opinion to establish its decision, not properly reflecting the Radio Paradiso programming. Thus it became a Waterloo for them when Radio Paradiso went to court. What might be more interesting is another Waterloo: The attempt to establish an Arabic radio station in Berlin. Especially for this purpose a new FM frequency has been planned. The proceedings had been tailor-made for this project, by an organization with activities in Syria already discussed here: http://www.mict-international.org/projects/refugee-radio-at-radialsystem-v/ But then the whole idea collapsed: https://www.facebook.com/mictinternational/posts/1031910260222114 In case you don't know this: The statement "there was an overwhelming consensus in Germany that the integration of more than one million freshly arrived refugees would be the main social challenge for many years to come", in a way that this is not a bad thing, is true only for the inside of a thick filter bubble. Just to quote a fact, whatever may be one's opinion about it. This journalist says (in a blog post, the opinion did not appear in any of the newspapers she works for) that it all is the to-be- condemned result of the end of Willkommenskultur: http://www.rnd-news.de/Blog/DieMedienkolumne/Medienanstalt-stoppt-Radio-fuer-Fluechtlinge But first of all, the whole thing was naïve from the start. MABB had some remaining money, sufficient for running the planned radio station for one year. But nobody could show how the station could be funded after that single year. And so they shunned away from launching a station that would be at very serious risk of having to shut down after a year. The leftist members of the MABB council will presumably have a different view, as told to the newspaper reporter. Be that as it may: It's probably indeed better this way; the project could have badly backfired, I fear. If you can make something of German-language interviews: http://www.wwwagner.tv/?p=30455 Meanwhile also a decision has been made what to do with the 91.0 MHz frequency that has been planned anyway: It will as of October be used by Alex, the citizen radio channel run by MABB. At present Alex shares slots on 88.4 MHz with other non-commercial broadcasters, and the former Alex airtime there will be reallocated to those other operators. http://mabb.de/presse/pressemitteilungen/details/ukw-vollfrequenz-fuer-alex-radio.html (Kai Ludwig, Germany, ibid.) ** GREECE. Stanley Rother as Oklahoma’s first saint are gaining momentum. Oklahoma and Arkansas Catholics are making a pilgrimage this week to Santiago Atitlán to observe the 35th anniversary of Rother’s assassination. Rother, an Okarche native and farmer, served parishes in Tulsa, Durant and Oklahoma City before going to Guatemala as a missionary for the impoverished, indigenous Mayan people called the Tzutujil. Three gunmen assumed to be a right-wing death squad assassinated Rother on July 28, 1981, in the parish rectory, but the unknown killers have never been brought to justice. The Tzutujil kept the priest’s heart in a half-gallon jar while his body was flown for burial in his native Oklahoma. When his vital organ was relocated to a more prominent location a decade after his martyrdom, the blood had not congealed, according to eyewitnesses of the excavation reported in a 2006 Oklahoma Gazette cover story. On the 35th anniversary of Rother’s death, the public is invited to a memorial mass at 5 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 211 W. Missouri, in Okarche. A Knights of Columbus carnival will follow from 6 to 10 p.m. Celebrants will include the Most Rev. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, Archbishop Emeritus Eusebius Beltran and fellow clergy. “It was this faithful teaching and living the word of God which made him a target of hatred and evil,” Beltran, then-archbishop of the OKC Archdiocese, told the Gazette in 2010. “When (he) was brutally attacked, beaten and shot dead, the natives of Santiago Atitlán and the Catholic people of Oklahoma were shocked and saddened. But immediately, the Tzutujil people enshrined his heart in the parish church because they believed Father Rother was a holy man. They believed he was a saint with God who would now be their intercessor.” The Rev. Thomas McSherry, who succeeded Rother in Guatemala, called his predecessor an inspiration for giving selflessly, fighting for justice and serving as a witness to the impoverished. “He was a priest, a pastor, an electrician, a plumber and a linguist,” McSherry told the Gazette. “He helped get the New Testament translated into (the) Tzutujil (language).” In 2009, Guatemala native Diego Colombi chronicled Rother’s story in the documentary “A’plas,” which means “Francis” in Tzutujil. In 2015, Rother was recognized formally as a martyr by a special Theological Commission at the Congregation of the Causes of Saints in Rome. This recognition marks the final stage before canonization as a saint. A new book, “The Shepherd Who Didn’t Run: Fr. Stanley Rother, Martyr from Oklahoma,” was released last December by author María Ruiz Scaperlanda. Recently, Rother’s story was told in a special segment by Kelly Ogle in June on KWTV News 9. Stanley’s life is depicted in a stained-glass window displayed at St. Eugene parish in Oklahoma City. In 2014, an Arkansas seminarian told of giving Pope Francis a Rother prayer card. “(Pope Francis) showed great interest in it,” Stephen Gadberry wrote in the Arkansas Catholic. “He skimmed over it and asked about the priest, allowing me some time to explain his story.” The Rother Guild also was formed to help spread Rother’s inspirational message and his cause worldwide. When Rother is canonized, everyone will know his story. Oklahoma Priest On Road To Becoming State's First Saint Posted: Jun 10, 2016 3:12 AM GST Updated: Jun 10, 2016 5:02 PM GST By Kelly Ogle, News 9 OKLAHOMA CITY - There are more than 10,000 saints in the Catholic Church. None of which have ever been a natural born American. However, an Oklahoma priest could soon hold that honor, as he moves one step closer to sainthood. Reverend Stanley Rother grew up on a farm in Okarche. His younger brother Tom Rother still lives there. "I drove the truck for him when we cut wheat," said Tom Rother. "We did our chores together, taking care of the calves and the hogs just like any normal farm boys." His older sister Marita Rother watched her brother follow a calling to priesthood, serving in Oklahoma for five years. In 1968, he answered another call as a missionary in Guatemala. He immediately felt a connection with the people in the small farming village of Santiago Atitilan. "Once he got there, I think it started to grow on him after he got his languages and began working more with the people, it was a very exciting thing for him," said Sister Marita. "He loved it and the people loved him." Rev. Rother helped the people of Santiago Atitilan build a small hospital and a school, as well as the first Catholic radio station, as the violence of the Guatemalan Civil War closed in. "He was helping the people, he was giving them a better education and the government didn't want that," Sister Marita said. In early 1981, he learned his name was on a death list. He fled home to Oklahoma to take refuge, but not for long. "He loved those people and he wasn't going to stay home," said Tom. After just a few months, he returned to Guatemala and on the night of July 28, 1981, three gunmen broke into his church and shot him. "My dad called and all he said was, ‘Well they got Stan,'" Sister Marita remembers. "My parents, they really took it hard, my mom especially because that was her pride and joy," said Tom. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City had long suspected his death was more than a senseless murder. "He had known that his life was in danger," said Fr. M. Price Oswalt, with the Archdiocese of OKC. "He wasn't just murdered, he wasn't just assassinated, he died a heroic death." Father Oswalt has spent 10 years working on Rother's cause - to have him declared the first native born American martyr saint. "If you are someone who died, who spilt their blood for the faith then that in itself was a step toward sainthood," he said. Two years ago, Archbishop Coakley presented a formal petition to the congregation in Rome which summarized the facts and testimony concerning the life and death of Rother. A year later, nine theologians gave a majority vote to declare Rother a martyr. "I think from the very beginning there was a sense that his death was not just a senseless murder," said Archbishop Coakley. "His life was unique in that he literally gave his life in a violent way in witness to his faith and it really bears the marks of the classic definition of martyrdom." The area where Rother was killed is now a chapel and a monument stands where his heart and a jar of his blood remain, to keep his spirit alive. "It was kind of very poetic and beautiful that the heart of the man remain behind, he gave his life for them, so they cherish his memory there," Archbishop Coakley said. "He inspired me. He was an ordinary priest, he wasn't a great scholar but he was a real pastor, a real shepherd and he was generous and he faced danger to stay and to care for his people." His body was returned to Oklahoma and buried in his hometown of Okarche. "A saint really is someone who stands out in God's eyes and people's eyes as special and it was pretty obvious that was what he was doing," said Sister Marita. Before Father Rother is declared a saint, two things need to happen in Rome. First, Bishops and Cardinals from around the world need to vote to declare him a martyr. If the Pope agrees, he then sets a Beatification ceremony to make his martyrdome official -- that's expected within a year. Then they also need proof of a miracle. Once that miracle is discovered and approved by Rome, the Pope declares him to become a Saint (via gh, DXLD) ** GUATEMALA. GH`s translation of parts of the above, referring to the still magical and unexplained ``worldwide broadcasts`` on SW without the use of relay SW transmitters, very near to 4055 kHz. We tried to find out about this earlier this year, but Dr Madrid admits he does not understand this new technology. ``I want to inform you how things are going for us at Radio Truth: On May 9, 2016, we stopped publishing new archives at Radio Truth TV, because the motherboard was severely damaged. On May 15, 2016, we stopped transmitting on Internet via mixlr, first because accidentally, we lost the license. We returned to buy another license, but we have had serious difficulties with the computer that transmits it. On the same date, May 15, 2016, we stopped broadcasting via Radio Truth Worldwide, by which we had been reaching almost the entire world with great power. This applicatioin was suspended because it depends on our Interent transmissions via mixlr. Now, we are hoping that very soon we shall return to the air via Internet with mixlr and with Radio Truth Worldwide. Afterwards we hope to publish new Radio Truth TV archives. These have been very difficult days due to our seriously low financial capability. I shall thank you for your prayers. May God bless you.`` Further translation by gh of another reply above: ``I forgot to inform you that as soon as we get back on Internet via mixlr, we shall also go on the air via Radio Truth Worldwide, which transmits via an application of Short Wave Alliance Euro-USA, and is heard with great strength in almost the entire world. Short Wave Alliance Euro-USA is a new scientific experiment, which is giving good results. Lamentably, upon suspending our Internet broadcasts, Short Wave Alliance Euro-USA was also suspended automatically, because they take our signal from Internet. For RVWW, I previously received excellent reports from USA, Japan and Bolivia. Radio Verdad Transmundial is the name we have given to this new, potent shortwave application.`` If one searches Google on that exact name, ``Short Wave Alliance Euro- USA``, the ONLY hits one gets are previous references to it from Dr Madrid as quoted by me and a few other DX sources! This reinforces my strong suspicion that it is all a scam. How can such an organization somehow using Internet to relay on shortwave have no presence whatsoever itself on the web? I assume the only reason Dr Madrid cannot come to the same conclusion is that he is a man of faith. As far as I can tell, no ``scientific`` proof exists that the reception reports he got were true SW pickups and/or not really direct from TGAV itself. Mixlr however is a real thing, apparently legitimate (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1836, DX LISTENING DIGEST) A todos los amigos y oyentes de Radio Verdad, les informamos que, finalmente, logramos salir al aire por Internet con el mixlr. RAYMIE`S MEXICO BEAT this week --- We have actual news from the IFT, though their hand was tipped last week. Indeed, De Corazón Purépecha, A.C., in Ario, Michoacán, is getting a station; the IFT also transferred three permits to social-community concessions, as well as various other permits for public and social stations (Raymie Humbert, Phœnix AZ, July 21, WTFDA Forum via DXLD) An update on the sad saga of XHK La Paz: On August 15 (40 days from July 6), the assets of XHK will go into liquidation, https://colectivopericu.net/2016/07/06/es-mi-opinion-423/ which certainly will be an impressive going-out-of-business sale --- of SD and analog equipment, as well as property and real estate. The proceeds from such a sale would go toward paying the claims of affected workers. Now, here is a question that probably can't be answered here, as we'd need a Mexican lawyer. One of the assets of Televisión La Paz, S.A., and potentially the most valuable, is the concession the station holds, which does not expire until 2021. There is a construction permit to build a digital television facility. Would someone want to buy? Could they buy it in a bankruptcy liquidation? The buyer would probably have to build new facilities and/or invest in new equipment, talent, programming, etc., but it could be a valuable asset given that XHK's collapse leaves BCS as one of the few states without any local commercial station (Raymie, July 25, ibid.) Fuzzy Math --- So I was reading two pieces from El Universal, one on high prices http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/articulo/cartera/telecom/2016/07/26/tiendas-limitan-acceso-la-radio-digital-acusa-promotor#.V5dwDKgTh4A.twitter and another on car industry uptake for HD Radio. [IBOC] http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/articulo/cartera/finanzas/2016/07/25/industria-automotriz-impulsa-uso-de-radio-de-alta-definicion It claims the following: "Of the 1752 radio stations in Mexico, only 102, 6 percent of the total, broadcast in digital radio, according to DTS. Mexico City has the most stations, with 14, followed by Oaxaca with 12, 6 in Chihuahua, 5 in Baja California and 3 in Chiapas." I found that total to be high. As you know, it is incredibly difficult to pin down the exact number of HD Radio stations due to out-of-date lists provided by both HD Radio and the IFT on their sites. In fact, HD Radio México's Facebook page is where the real action is, and that's unfortunate. My HD Radio in Mexico map has 65 pins on it. So I ended up asking if that number was correct, and received a reply from the reporter explaining that the total of 102 included multiprogramming, with 55 HD1s. https://twitter.com/sarycantera/status/758011537176965120 OK, now that's a bit more realistic. But I still have 65 pins, and there are 55 operating HD Radio stations in the country. (At least we have a number!!) So who's not operating, of my 65 pins? And why does Oaxaca have 9 more HD stations than I thought? Well, we can explain the latter. Oaxaca has one IMER station, which is of course operating in HD (XHSCO Salina Cruz) and carries two subs. But it also has CORTV, a state network with 33 transmitters and which has shown a special love for HD Radio. As far as I knew, only the Oaxaca area transmitters (XHCRR, which carries the programs of the other 31 transmitters, and local station XHOAX) were HD. But there might be more, potentially 9 more; it would certainly explain why CORTV spent 28 million pesos. http://old.nvinoticias.com/oaxaca/general/comunicaciones/316108-anuncian-cortv-encendido-digital As to the former, let's look at the chart of stations by state: http://forums.wtfda.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=19322&d=1469563571 Click image for larger version. Name: estaciones.jpeg Views: 4 Size: 19.9 KB ID: 19322 Mexico City (14): 3 IMER FMs, 2 Fórmula FMs, 2 Imagen FMs, 5 Radio Centro FMs, XHFO, and Radio Ibero XHUIA (which was used for some of the 400 kHz spacing tests) Oaxaca (12): CORTV FMs?? plus XHSCO Salina Cruz (IMER) Chihuahua (6): MegaRadio's XHGU and XHH in Cd. Juárez along with IMER XHUAR there, and I have a fourth pin for XHQD in Chihuahua Capital. You do get to six if we add two more MegaRadio FMs in Chihuahua Capital: XHBW and XHBU. That's probably who the other two are. Baja California (5): I have pins for 9 FMs here. In Tijuana: XHITZ, XETRA, XHGLX, XHRM, XHTY, XHUAN, XHFG. Also, XHHIT C. Bola and XHMIX Mexicali. Several AMs - XEKAM, XEQIN (which I strongly doubt to be HD), XERM and XESURF (again, I'm skeptical) also have HD Radio approval. It could be that XHITZ, XETRA and XHRM are not being counted as Tijuana stations, or thus as Mexico stations, but that only gets us to six. Chiapas (3): All IMER stations. Tamaulipas (2): If we are counting FMs only, I have XHRV Valle Hermoso and XHNOE and XHNK Nuevo Laredo. I am skeptical about XHRV. Coahuila (2): XHAJ and XHRP Saltillo hold HD Radio authorizations, as does XHRF in Cd. Acuña. I suspect XHAJ is not operating in HD. San Luis Potosí (2): I have one pin here, for XHUSP. A second HD here is actually news to me, if it's not XEXQ-AM. Sonora (2): XHFQ-FM Cananea is one. I don't know the other: there are two HD AMs possible, one in Nogales and the other in Caborca. Michoacán (2): I have a bunch of pins in Michoacán, but who is it? XHI has to be one of them, but who's with them? XHAZN? XHEXL? XHESOL? Sister XHLIA? And one each in: Nuevo León (XHFMTU Monterrey) Yucatán (XHYUC Mérida IMER) Veracruz (XHTP, though XHRN is also authorized) Aguascalientes (XHUZ, with XHUNO also authorized) Quintana Roo (XHCAN) Notably missing: Jalisco: XHLC is authorized, but Guadalajara is the country's second-largest city and its total absence here is kind of stunning Sinaloa: A 2012 guide I came across from Pioneer México lists XHVU as HD. It is MegaRadio (it went MegaRadio -> Radiorama -> MegaRadio in the span of a few years), so this isn't terribly surprising, but I can't find anything about it (Raymie, July 26, ibid.) ** MONGOLIA. RF 29, KTUZ ``30-1`` Telemundo station, July 26 at 0515 UT is in freeze-frame, not only on the air but via Suddenlink Cable 21: a buxom but unexposed woman at a table across from a man, with the hashtag lower right: #SinSenosSíHayParaíso --- I keep an eye on it rechecking and rechecking and it`s *still* frozen for almost another hour, when at 0607 UT it fitfully updates to some scheduled infomercial before freezing again. A little research shows that`s the title of a new novela which premiered last week, produced in Colombia as a sequel to ``Sin Senos No Hay Paraíso``. Altho I`ve never axually watched it, I had found that an intriguing title, as literally translated means ``Without Breasts There Is No Paradise``, and now ``Without Breasts There Really Is Paradise``. Wiki and other sources do not explain what the title means, where it comes from, but the background to the novel does not seem to be about breasts at all, let alone mastectomy or augmentation. Perhaps it`s an obvious allusion for someone within the Latin American culture; if so, what? Altho the primary translation of ``seno`` is ``breast`` as far as I am concerned, it seems the word is really extremely ambiguous, according to my Random House dixionary: ``SENO m. hollow; hole; concavity; bosom, breast; chest; uterus, womb; any internal cavity of the body; bay, cove; lap (of a woman); interior (of anything), heart; gulf; math: sine; anat: sinus``. So perhaps the title is a play on some of these (translated) meanings? I`m always amused by how such feminine anatomy comes out masculine in Spanish: Viva el machismo! As for KTUZ freezing for over an hour, the show is scheduled at 8-9 pm and again at 11 pm-midnight CDT = 04-05 UT, so the freeze probably occurred sometime during the latter hour. Same KTUZ RF 29 transmitter also radiates Univisión as ``36-1`` and Estrella TV as ``48-1``, both of which remained unscathed. So was it an input problem back at the studio? A heavy storm was hitting OKC at this time. We also earlier during Colbert inexplicably lost cable HD access to KWTV 109 on one set, also SD KWTV 9 on another, which supposedly reach Enid headend by fibre-optic, not OTA; while KWTV continued without interruption on RF 39 thru antenna, which is how I prefer to watch it unless there be some breakup here in the DTV fringe area from OKC (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** OMAN vs CUBA. POLISH RADIO INTIMIDATED BY THE KREMLIN http://www.press.pl/tresc/44941,masza-makarowa-odchodzi-z-radia-polsha---na-pozegnanie-pisze-mocny-list A Russian editor, Masha Makarova, left Polskie Radio on Friday because she considers the situation there as no longer acceptable. She says that five staff members at Polskie Radio Russian service have been fired in May and its former head been pressed into sickleave, been replaced by someone described as incompetent. Current climate at Polskie Radio is described as "paranoia and intimidation", similar to the situation at Russian news media, making it hardly possible to counter Kremlin propaganda anymore. Every day articles are taken offline. Only "the conspiracy theories" of certain Polish media are to be covered in the press review "but of course not Gazeta Wyborcza which publishes articles that reflect the opinion of the author". Makarova compares with Russian TV station RBK where, she says, recently "a double line has been drawn" and 20 staff members been fired: "Unfortunately Polish journalists go into the save mode of self-censorship much quicker than their Russian colleagues. That's a big disappointment." Makarova thanks (ironically) those who have teached here "what a journalist should do when the freedom of opinion is being violated" and says that she is proud of being the first staff member (of Polskie Radio Russian or, maybe, its foreign service in its entirety) who has drawn the consequences. She states that the number of unique visits (monthly, apparently) of the Polskie Radio Russian website has declined from 380,000 in March to 90,000 now (Kai Ludwig, Germany, July 24, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Not clear though why she draws a parallel with RBK, the latter nearly bankrupt and put up for sale for peanuts by a well-known Russian oligarch with liberal views (not so popular nowadays). RUSSIA TO DEPLOY TWO POWERFUL OTH RADAR SYSTEMS IN THE BALTIC AND BLACK SEAS and beyond Russian Interfax news agency reported that Russia may attempt to compensate for the increase in NATO’s military activity by placing two new radar stations in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, which would be able to control the 200-mile coastal zone. "It is expected that modified Podsolnuh (Sunflower) over-the-horizon radar units will start combat duty in the Baltic Sea in 2017," Interfax’s source said, adding that similar radar could be deployed in the Crimea in 2017. “It can see any warship that sails through the Bosporus Strait." The Podsolnuh radar system passed the Russian government tests in 2006. There are three stations currently on duty: one in the Sea of Okhotsk, another in the Sea of Japan and the third in the Caspian Sea. Podsolnuh allows its operators to automatically and simultaneously detect, track and classify potential threats beyond the radio horizon. It can find up to 300 offshore objects and 100 air objects, determine their coordinates and transfer them to targeting complexes and systems of armed naval vessels and air defense systems. In June, Podsolnuh’s developer, RTI, told Interfax that the company plans to supply the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation with several more radars in the future. "In 2017, the Russian Defense Ministry plans to purchase several stations for the Navy that will be deployed in the Arctic, as well as at the southern and western borders of Russia," said the Director General of RTI, Sergey Boev. In March, Podsolnuh guided warships of the Caspian fleet equipped with the Caliber-NK missile complex during naval military exercises (UAWIRE Thursday, July 7, 2016 via La Rassegna stampa, Radiorama numero 58, AIR Associazione Italiana Radioascolto, Torino, Italy via RusDX 24 July via DXLD) OTH = over the horizon, which requires the use of HF = SW frequencies ** RUSSIA. 7295.005, July 21 at 1143, R. July 22, at 0850, with decent open carrier; 0900 started with IS and time pips; into the news and later some music; started out almost fair; by 1015 was very good, with // 7345 fair. So Hiroyuki Komatsubara's reception and mine, of hearing them recently on the air before 0900, must have been related to the unique situation of the Yakutsk sports games being held then. What was strange today was that by 1050 it was just the reverse regarding what I heard at 1015. 7345 was many times stronger than 7295. Could they have changed transmitters during the broadcast? 1100- 1300 found 7295 mostly unusable and 7345 covered by CNR1 1100-1300. 7345, Radio Sakha, via Yakutsk. There are some days now when R. Sakha is slightly stronger than CNR1 on 7345, after 1100. 7345, Radio Sakha, via Yakutsk. July 27 with anomaly reception; both frequencies doing very well at 1050, with usual "Radio Sakha" ID and chimes leading into series of ads; subsequent checking continued to find them both with about equal signal strength; this is a first for me, as normally only one or the other is much stronger. My observations yesterday must have been correct; China was listening and found, just as I also observed, that RTI was not broadcasting on the 25th. So on July 26, found this frequency complete free of either RTI or CNR1, with random checking 1000-1121. So it is fine now for SIBC (Solomon Islands) to again have extended use of this frequency, which they sometimes do have long after their normal 0500* 9545, non-log of both RTI & CNR1 (CHINA). It is questionable whether all radio licenses will survive the breakdown of democracy. You have to wait for future developments towards a presidential democracy and a Sultan domination of Erdogan on the anniversary of statehood in 2023 year. Germany is expecting a new influx of refugees from Turkey following President Erdogan's authoritarian crackdown. The sackings and persecution practically mean a destruction of their living condition. The Turkish government just voted to give even more powers to an already-autocratic leader, suspending 'human rights'. 2. Reports that the information is false is coming from a Turkish government regulatory agency which has NOT been purged (ergo - Loyal to Erdogan). 3. Written by pro-Erdogan Turkish citizen. WHAT A LARK! BBC TO BROADCAST BIRDSONG Radio Waves By Ian MacRae, Editor 26 July 2016 Radio 3 is to broadcast a track of birdsong every Sunday morning as it launches a “slow radio” bid to help the nation get back to nature. The BBC station is to run snippets of birdsong at around two minutes long, as part of a new breakfast-time feature starring nightingales, cuckoos and garden warblers. Radio 3’s version will attempt to marry the popularity of the early- morning clip with a trend for “slow tv”, pioneered in Scandinavia and recently broadcast to critical acclaim on BBC Four with radio. It is intended to echo a famous 1924 BBC broadcast, which saw cellist Beatrice Harrison perform in her garden while a nightingale sang along. Alan Davey, controller of BBC Radio 3, said: “We know our audience has a love for the natural world and that birdsong is an enduring British interest, and we hope that these new birdsong-inspired features and performances, as part of Radio 3’s wider exploration of ‘slow radio’ will offer our audiences a real chance to reflect and catch-up.” radiowave@allaboutradio.net Posted by: (Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) KHFM, the classical music station in Albuquerque, where I previously worked, used to start every day around 6 am MST/MDT with a wide variety of birdsongs for several minutes (Glenn Hauser, DXLD) ** U S A. The program audio is fed from an off air receiver in San Angelo via an internet STL to an office in Irving. From Irving it is fed to Cedar Hill via microwave. (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1836, DX LISTENING DIGEST) These are "interruptible feedback" channels used by some TV stations to cue reporters and others in the field. They used to be a common way of getting on-air audio to staff on remotes along with instructions from producers back at the studio. Why these frequencies are still used for this purpose in some places is a mystery, though. Technological inertia, perhaps. As far as I know, FCC rules prohibit the use of these IFB channels to "broadcast" to the general public. In fact, listening to them is a violation of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, as is monitoring of remote VHF/UHF "Marti" frequencies still used by some radio stations (the same law bans monitoring of cellular telephone signals, although that became moot with the conversion to digital systems). No one has ever been prosecuted for DXing IFB transmitters, though - to my knowledge - and some stations will even QSL reports. 73, (Andy Robins, Kalamazoo, Michigan USA, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1836, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I can't think of a business reason either, unless it's a case of use it or lose it. I believe the owner is in the broadcast services business, contracting with stations to provide services such as IFB for airborne traffic reporting. I doubt that KLDE needs to cue a traffic copter so perhaps since the equipment was available it's being continued for non business reasons. Re: https://www.bbg.gov/blog/2016/07/20/bbg-networks-provide-thorough-coverage-failed-coup-attempt-turkey/ I find this PR rather strange, even displeasing. But they released this only on July 20. At a point at which the latest developments in Turkey were already sufficiently evident. Yet no word about future coverage for and of Turkey. It reads as if they believe that freedom and democracy in Turkey have been successfully defended the last weekend and there is no reason for further attention. In both cases, it took my SONY ICF-2001D's synch detector another 3-4 s to restore the proper zero beat phase locking and thus have the MFSK stream again centered on 1500 Hz audio frequency, a period during which reading the text was still difficult to impossible. So I looked up the archive and found that you mentioned "on UT July 12th" at 5'52" into your WOR 1834 podcast, followed by "Radio Pio 12", and I heard the same yesterday (Sunday 2016-07-24) by 2109z on IRRS MW 1368 kHz. To give you the evidence, I have taken the snippets from the podcast any yesterday's off-air recording and compiled them into a stereo mix, with the podcast on the left and IRRS in the right channel. A short while before, I had also noted (but not yet recorded) the very distinctive R. Tirana Int-Sig's which you had (very unusually) played during your WOR 1834 show. Says he is also on 5130 and 3250; I can get a weak signal on 5129.9 but nothing yet on 3250. Reminisces about his adventures with the m/v Sarah, since this is the twenty-ninth anniversary today of when the ship hit the fan, FCC/FBI bust after four broadcasts. His fellow pirate J. P. is in the studio, off-mike for some comments. Rest of the hour, girlfriend Pam sings some songs accompanying on ukulele, culminating with ``Amazing Grace`` past 0100 hourtop as Allan joins in. Then Allan reads an editorial by The Wandering Engineer in trade journal Radiomagazine advocating for low-power AMs being allowed 1.6-3 MHz with easy licensing, 10 watts to 30-foot vertical (like TIS), enough to cover a small town or a large neighborhood. Allan says the LPFM in Skowhegan ME, on 98.1 which TimTron helped to build, is doing well after a year, and really gets out with only 2.5 watts from ``TimTron`s mountain``. (WTFDA database shows it`s WXNZ-LP running only 2.4! watts but 202 meters above average terrain, ``Hooskow Radio`` with variety format.) Then to Q&A from e-mail. Why did Allan choose ``William Tell Overture`` for his theme? Just because it`s invigorating and he likes it. J.P. gave him the record, but they are unsure which version, maybe London Symphony Orchestra. WBCQers are gathering in Monticello for a party tomorrow, and J. P. will be doing `Shortwave Saturday Night` from WBCQ itself, allowing him to go out on UStream video, from 22 UT, also 7490. Benedixion at 0132; ID at 0135 and back to BS on 7490. One of my favourite radio stations is ZBC Radio from Tanzania as I love their East African music. Some years ago this picture appeared on the cover of Listening In. My cat, Wimpy, had fallen asleep on the World English Survey pages so I slipped the earbuds on him and snapped the picture of “Wimpy, the DXing cat!”. My late Italian father-in-law could not say “Wimpy” so he called him “Wimbo” which is Swahili for song and is apropos as Wimpy had a sing-songy meow. Every time I hear an announcer on ZBC Radio mention “wimbo” it makes me thing of my long deceased friend, Wimpy. Send me your radio-related photos of pets and I will publish them here. I freely admit that I make spelling errors, and occasionally logging errors. So what, they are minor, so are the others that I see, to include your own. This Shortwave medium that I listen to almost daily if not weekly is far from a perfect medium to listen to or log. There are very few of us who take the time to listen or make the effort to log Shortwave broadcasts anymore. Appreciate those who do and give them credit for what they do instead of constantly criticizing their efforts. In the going on 4 years I have participated in this hobby I cannot remember were you ever gave a pat on the back to anyone but yourself. If you are looking for perfection I humbly suggest you look other places and devote your energy into something that can be changed by constant criticism. DXers logging errors, and Shortwave is not that venue, nor will it ever be. We, like you, are fallible. You Sir, are wasting your time and making the hobby less of a fun activity to participate in (John Cooper, Lebanon, PA, NASWA Flashsheet July 24 via DXLD) Anything worth doing is worth doing well. I have no such ``vendetta``. As an editor, I merely put a high value on accuracy, and am rather astounded when fellow DXers or editors do not, instead make excuses and blame me for trying to get things right, later if not sooner. They would rather that incorrect info go un-noticed, un-challenged and un- corrected. I make no apology for setting a high standard of accuracy for myself and others. Or course I am fallible – when I make a typo or a more significant error, I WANT to be told about it so I can correct it ASAP. Thus I can correct others with a clear conscience. I am not nit-picking. I overlook countless obvious minor mistakes, and/or correct them myself if I am quoting them. Sometimes a typo is the difference between something being news or not news, e.g. a new(?) frequency. So one has to question it. Once inaccurate info is published, it needs to be corrected in the same place. If people send me their logs directly, I would be glad to discuss with them privately about anything questionable, before it gets published! I do appreciate and ``pat on the back`` by quoting logs from numerous sources in DX Listening Digest, because I find them of value. (Unfortunately this is seldom the case with John`s due to his extremely generic logging comments.) The number one thing to do is ensure that you have made your own place as RF quiet as possible. Devices cause more VHF QRM than in the past because their primary base frequencies are getting higher (i.e.-some start at 30 MHz for example and may not cause any QRM on AM radio). VHF Ferrite Cores on device data & power cables help a lot. I like Digi-Key part # 240-2580-ND. https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/laird-signal-integrity-products/28A0807-0A2/240-2580-ND/1287226 Order at least 25 to save money then start putting them on anything that makes noise in the FM band. Use a portable FM radio tuned to 87.5 or 87.7 to find noise. If you can, try wrapping the cables through the filter a second time as this cuts the noise 3 times as much as simply putting the core on the cable. For skinny cables, you can even try 3 turns if possible. I have ferrite cores on tons of things in the house. EVERY cable coming out of my router and computer in my shack made the biggest differences. But I also found other longer-distance noise producers - my wife's curling iron (even when turned off) and her boom-box. The biggest VHF-noise producer was a touch-lamp that has been permanently unplugged. According to the American Meteor Society, normal rates range from 50-75 shower members per year, but in 2016 they will appear at double the normal rate. NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke was quoted by Space.com as saying the rate could top 150 and even reach 200 meteors per hour. The outburst is the first of its kind since 2009. While the showers peak between Aug. 12-13, they are active between July 13-Aug. 26 and can be seen during this period. Spacedex offers tips for the best way to view the meteor showers. Though the sun is currently in an activity lull, it certainly isn't sleeping. Early on Saturday, it erupted with a solar flare one-two punch, both magnetic explosions ranking as the most powerful observed on the sun for 2016. The first flare kicked off at 0211 UT (10:11 p.m., Friday, EST), [sic: that`s EDT, not EST; hope rest of article is more accurate! gh] registering as an M5-class flare and then, only 3 hours later, a second flare was triggered, reaching a peak of a M7.6, making this the most energetic flare of the year so far. Solar flares are ranked on a logarithmic scale, much in the same way as earthquakes are measured using the Richter Scale. "M-class" flares are considered "medium" flares, with the most powerful flares categorized as "X-class" flares. Though these two latest explosions weren't the most powerful flares our sun can muster, they can still have an impact on Earth. The radiation generated by flares such as these cause waves of ionization to ripple through the upper atmosphere (in a region known as the ionosphere). When this happens, shortwave radio transmissions around the planet can be affected and sometimes completely blocked. The NOAA routinely monitors these space weather events and issues maps of the regions and frequencies affected. Air traffic communications can be impacted, as can mariners and ham radio operators may have noticed a weakening in radio signals. The solar flare pair originated in a highly magnetized region known as an active region (AR). In this case, the AR2565-AR2567 sunspot complex was to blame. Powerful magnetic fields are extremely dense in this region, which is currently rotating over the sun's limb and out of view. But when the flares were triggered, beautiful arcs of superheated solar plasma could be seen reaching into the lower corona (the sun's multi-million degree atmosphere). This intense environment was ripe for solar flares and, when the conditions were just right, magnetic reconnection occurred, causing a rapid magnetic reorganization that accelerated and heated the sun's plasma, generating intense radiation. Followup observations also tracked a significant coronal mass ejection (or CME) race away from the blast site, taking a bubble of magnetism and hot gas with it (as shown in the animation above). Though the CME itself is not expected to hit Earth, shock waves from the CME can impact the flow of the solar wind -- a steady stream of ionized particles from the sun -- potentially causing a minor geomagnetic storm, according to Spaceweather.com. The stream of solar wind particles from this shock are expected to reach Earth orbit on Tuesday (July 26). By carefully monitoring the sun's lower corona and tracking events such as solar flares and CMEs, alerts can be sent out should damaging space weather conditions be predicted. Much like tracking a hurricane on Earth, tracking the progress of space weather can help prevent damage when the storm makes landfall (or "Earthfall"). High energy particles in CMEs and the solar wind can impact satellites and even have effects down here on Earth. For more on this topic, check out my recent DNews video. Posted by: (Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) SUN BLASTS OUT 2016'S STRONGEST FLARE Space.com July 27, 2016 The sun fired off its strongest solar flare of 2016 during an active weekend that saw three eruptions from the star's surface. The uptick in solar activity occurred overnight on Friday and Saturday (July 22 and 23) when the sun unleashed three relatively moderate solar flares, all of which were captured on video by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. While all three were somewhat minor, they are the first substantial solar events in months, NASA officials said in a statement. The first solar flare registered as an M5.0 sun storm and peaked Friday night at 10:11 p.m. EDT (0211 July 23 GMT). It was followed by a second, more-intense flare, which peaked as an M7.5- class solar storm on Saturday at 1:16 a.m. EDT (0516 GMT). A third, M5.5-class flare peaked 15 minutes later, at 1:31 a.m. EDT (0531 GMT) More here including video http://www.space.com/ Posted by: (Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) :Product: Weekly Highlights and Forecasts :Issued: 2016 Jul 25 0218 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/weekly.html # # Weekly Highlights and Forecasts # Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 18 - 24 July 2016 Solar activity was low on 18-20 and 22 July with multiple C-class flares from Regions 2565 (N04,L=175, class/area Dho/320 on 16 July) and 2567 (N05, L=166, class/area Dki/380 on 21 July). The largest flare during that period was a C4.6 from Region 2567 at 20/2215 UTC. Moderate solar levels were observed on 21 and 24 July with four M-class flares observed from Region 2567. The largest flare during that period was an M2.0 observed at 24/0620 UTC. Activity reached high levels on 23 July with three M-class flares from Region 2567. The first was an M5.0, which peaked at 23/0211 UTC. The second was an M7.6/2b flare with an associated 310 sfu Tenflare. The final was an M5.5/3b, which peaked 15 minutes later at 23/0531 UTC had accompanying Type II (729 km/s shock velocity) and Type IV radio emissions, as well as a 900 sfu Tenflare. Two CMEs were observed in coronagraph imagery lifting off the west limb at 23/0524 UTC and 23/0548 UTC. Both CMEs were determined to not have an Earth-directed component. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. However, a slight enhancement to near 1 pfu was observed at 23/0725 UTC due to the flare activity from early on 23 July. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 18-19 July, normal levels from 20-23 July, and moderate levels on 24 July. Geomagnetic field activity reached minor storm levels on 19-20 and 24 July due to the shock arrival of two CMEs. The first shock arrival was likely associated with flare activity on 16 July and was observed at the ACE spacecraft at 19/2310 UTC with a speed of approximately 450 km/s. The Bt component increased from near 5 nT to 17 nT and Bz reached a maximum southward deviation of -12 nT. Minor storm levels were observed from 19/2355 until 20/0600 UTC. The second shock enhancement was observed near 24/1450 UTC and likely associated with flare activity on 20 July. Wind speeds increased from near 400 km/s to 470 km/s accompanied by a Bt enhancement from 5 nT to 13 nT and southward deflection of Bz to -9 nT for nearly three hours. Minor storm conditions were observed with this event during the 24/1800-2100 UTC synoptic period. Geomagnetic field activity was quiet on 18, 21-23 July with a nominal solar wind. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 25 JULY - 20 AUGUST 2016 Solar activity is expected to be very low to low for the first half of the period with a chance for M-class flares from 05-19 August due to the return of old Region 2567. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels for the majority of the period with high levels from 05-15 August due to recurrent CH HSS events. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 25-27 July due to lingering CME effects and the arrival of a positive polarity CH HSS. Active to minor storm levels are expected on 29 July, 03-05, 08, and 10 August due to recurrent CH HSS activity. Mostly quiet to unsettled conditions are expected for the remainder of the period. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2016 Jul 25 0218 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2016-07-25 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2016 Jul 25 75 8 3 2016 Jul 26 75 15 3 2016 Jul 27 70 12 3 2016 Jul 28 70 8 3 2016 Jul 29 70 20 5 2016 Jul 30 70 12 3 2016 Jul 31 70 8 3 2016 Aug 01 70 5 2 2016 Aug 02 70 5 2 2016 Aug 03 70 20 5 2016 Aug 04 70 20 5 2016 Aug 05 80 15 4 2016 Aug 06 95 10 3 2016 Aug 07 105 10 3 2016 Aug 08 105 20 5 2016 Aug 09 105 8 3 2016 Aug 10 105 12 4 2016 Aug 11 105 10 3 2016 Aug 12 105 8 3 2016 Aug 13 105 5 2 2016 Aug 14 105 5 2 2016 Aug 15 105 8 3 2016 Aug 16 105 12 3 2016 Aug 17 100 5 2 2016 Aug 18 90 8 3 2016 Aug 19 85 8 3 2016 Aug 20 80 5 2 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1836, DXLD) GLENN`S PROPAGATION OUTLOOK FOR MEDIA NETWORK PLUS AS OF JULY 28, 2016 Keith, Seeker.com reports the biggest solar flares of the year erupted on July 23.
