Hello Drita, The same problem was also affecting the transmission in ALBANIAN today [23rd June) at 0800 UT+ on 7390 kHz. The signal level was fairly good, but there was hardly any modulation of the broadcast. I could hear voices, but very weak, and in the background only. There was some 'hum' but this was not the main problem. I'm quite sure that the broadcast would have been totally unintelligible to most listeners. I will try the evening transmissions later today on 7465 kHz and let you know what I hear then. Greetings from a warm and sunny Blackpool (Noel Green, via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 7464.976. Radio Tirana Shijak, Italian service noted at 1658-1712 UT on June 23. Transmitter FAULTY performance, no real audio heard, no interval signal, no voice, no music parts on reliable signal level. Listen to enclosed recording in ogg.format, and two screenshot taken in Italy and Belgium remote SDR unit installations, audio signal visible like a wide GARDEN FENCE single-each string signal. 73 wolfy df5sx (Wolfgang Büschel, ibid.) Yes, and the same here with me. The signal strength was good, but there was little or no recognisable audio - it was very difficult to tell what the language was (even though I knew it was Italian) There was also a loud him / buzz type noise accompanying the audio which made things even worse. Something requires urgent attention, Drita. Greetings from (Noel Green, ibid.) 9854.95, June 24 at 0124, R. Tirana is still suffering from extreme dysfunxion: hum-roar making the IS barely audible underneath. 0130 sign-on completely unreadable, and still the same at 0148. This Shijak signal is only S5, while over at Cërrik, the Chinese are putting out S9+30 clearly modulated, for the CRI English relay on 9570. 9854.95, June 25 at 0127, R. Tirana at S5 with IS under the same humroar it`s been putting out for at least a week; 0130 I can tell the canned sign-on is playing, but with extreme distortion. Still awful at 0151. How much longer will this go on? Wolfgang Büschel and Noel Green agree that the evening broadcasts to Europe on 7465 have the same defect (and probably the morning on 7390) (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Radio Tirana with awful modulation, extreme distortion, June 25: 0700-0900 7390 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to WeEu Albanian Daily, relay HS-1 1700-1730 7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to SoEu Italian Mon-Sat 1730-1800 7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to WeEu French Mon-Sat 1931-2000 7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to WeEu German Mon-Sat 2000-2030 7465 SHI 100 kW / 310 deg to U.K. English Mon-Sat http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.bg/2016/06/radio-tirana-with-awful-modulation.html -- 73! Tirana comes on, still with big humroar atop interval signal; 0140 check, program audio is so buried it`s unreadable. Radio Tirana desperately needs to do something about this; there is no point in continuing to transmit until this defect be repaired. CKST-1040 Vancouver BC: 6/22 9:35 PM PDT [0435 UT June 23] tuned in to Vancouver Canadians vs. Everett AquaSocks baseball game, TSN 10-40 slogan, many ads between at bats. Blasting in so they must have had problems with their antenna pattern (or on purpose for the game). Didn't hear it on 6/23. Rare to hear Canada here and it's been years since I've heard CKST. Heard on Sony Walkman SRF-M37W. Anyone have a contact for a verie? (Martin Foltz, Mission Viejo CA, ABDX via DXLD) Hi Martin, They are a regular here in the Twin Cities and they shouldn't be. This has been going on for years (Todd in Bloomington MN Skaine, June 25, ibid.) They've been coming under and sometimes equal to WHO here in IL on good distant skip nights for about a decade. Most certainly not using night pattern. 73 KAZ (Neil Kazaross, ibid., WORLD OF RADIO 1832) NRC Pattern Book shows night pattern a flattened cardioid with a deep null towoard WHO. Day pattern is same but rotated to null southward (gh, WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) I mailed out a reception report today. Found the name of the DoE on the Internet, I haven't heard them since and bet they were "beaming" the game south to their opponents home town (Martin Foltz, CA, June 27, ABDX via DXLD) Here's CKST day pattern. https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/404424-56080.pdf Huge null to the south and great pattern to cover Canada and also make it a pest in MN in fall/winter where it isn't too hard to loop WHO. This day pattern commonly used at night for at least a decade puts almost no signal to So. Cal. and puts enough signal into IL/WI to have them in the mix with WHO here. Here's their spec'd night pattern. https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/404424-56082.pdf This pattern also doesn't put much signal towards Everett WA or So. Cal. Therefore, if they were blasting in, I presume you caught them running with just one stick, so ND. As to whether this was just an accident, who knows, but I have my doubts. To be sure, check the next time these two teams have a night game. Jun/July is a good time to log the Pac NW from So. Cal. in the evenings and via SSS. The sun sets considerably later in Seattle this time of the year than in L.A. so your locals may be off or on lower night powers while Pac. NW's are still on day power. Having outdoor wires to phase was a big help for this 30 years ago from Rancho Bernardo. As an example, I could phase Tijuana on 800 and get KPDQ and when KPDQ lowered power (or maybe they went off back then) CKOR was sometimes heard. 73 (KAZ, ibid.) I lived out in BC when the station first launched, and their pattern was so tight, that no more than a couple minutes walk south of the border, the station sounded like it was out of tune and it was weak. I remember one early morning in the late 80's at a motel in Regina, Saskatchewan. I tuned them in and they were battling WHO. Both were equal strength (Justin Nielsen, ibid.) ** CHINA. 5985-USB, VC01 (Chinese Military numbers station), 1247 & 1310, June 27. Numbers in Chinese; decent signal, but mixing with R. I think that what you are reporting is happening in your part of the world, to which we are not broadcasting on those frequencies. Best regards (Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich, Senior Consultant/ Advisor, and Frequencies Manager, Radio Habana Cuba, ICRT, via Ivo Ivanov, DXLD) Dear Prof. Coro, Just is needed coordination between Radio Habana Cuba RHC and other shortwave broadcasters in HFCC, not only in ITU (Ivo Ivanov, ibid.) Dear Señor Ivo, We will never coordinate with HFCC because of the presence there of the ANTI CUBAN subversive broadcasts based in the USA. That is why all our services are properly registered at the ITU where interested administrations can check and if they so desire, as often done, they can coordinate directly through bilateral contacts with us in Cuba. We check our services areas with highly qualified monitors, and the Radio China International you mention is not present at all in our service area on the frequencies that you in very distant Europe are mentioning. For your information, the side lobes of curtain antennas are NEVER contemplated as service to listeners. ITU is the official international organization and for us it works very well indeed, and we have all our stations registered properly and legally. From sunny La Habana, Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich (all via Ivo Ivanov, via DXLD) That particular clash of 17580 vs 17580 may be irrelevant for both stations, but there are plenty of free channels on the under-used 16m band, and even this could have been avoided by bilateral Communist coordination. Typical myopic me-first POV of some station frequency managers: while some frequencies can be shared by applying propagational principles, it so happens that SW is a worldwide medium, so why not AVOID CONFLICTS where possible, so even listeners outside the respective target areas can get a clear if weak signal??? Lately they are noted announcing 105.6 MHz also. This is the 10 kW Gyan Vani transmitter frequency which was taken off air on Oct 2, 2014. RAYMIE`S MEXICO BEAT this week --- The Lineamientos Generales got their day in the DOF, and so we can read the approved document and compare it to the draft from December. I forgot to note that the document references A/65:2013. Aside from the changing of generic "Instituto" references to mention the UMCA (Unidad de Medios y Contenidos Audiovisuales), an addition of eight words has important consequences. It indicates that the order of assignment for virtual channels will begin with national networks, then regional services followed by local stations. This article got a lot longer. It still mentions that the IFT will publish a list of virtual channels, but it mentions that it will be updated often, and that the list will also be placed in the RPC. (I expect that at some point search by virtual channel will be possible.) There's also a new Transitory Article 5 that allows for stations to petition the IFT to begin using assigned virtual channels early. What's also important is what's not here, a modification to the definition of "identity" that would have favored Televisa and other CIRT broadcasters by making station age and longevity part of it. The IFT did not do that. We'll be getting a document from the IFT soon in which the institute responds to all the public comments it received, including mine (Raymie Humbert, Phœnix AZ, June 27, WTFDA Forum via DXLD) Time for "News from Recent IFT Meetings". There isn't much, but there are two items of note. First up is the transition of another 79 radio permits and 44 TDT permits to public concessions. The IFT is moving lots of permits to concessions. Meanwhile, XHRIO, XHSDD, various Azteca stations, Wave 3 SPR stations (such as Campeche, Aguascalientes, Obregón) authorized for multiprogramming. XHRIO and XHSDD have been doing multiprogramming for quite some time. We also now have details on the social AM at Betania, Chis. to be operated by La Fuente de Poder, Educativa Indígena de Chiapas, A.C. It will broadcast with 1 kW on 1310 kHz under the callsign XERAM-AM. Coords: 16-36-32, 92-31-17, about 12 miles due southeast of San Cristóbal de las Casas. ——— Oh goody, that response document is already available. Let's sink our teeth into it! http://www.ift.org.mx/sites/default/files/industria/temasrelevantes/6017/documentos/respuestasgeneralesaloscomentariosdelaconsulta160616vl.pdf You have to go to page 23 to start seeing actual words from the IFT, and they reference the public comments by number. For instance, I go first, so all my mentions are 1.x. On shadows, the IFT says that there may be individual modifications in areas where they clash... (Given a national scheme, this is not as large of an issue.) The Guidelines will determine the way forward to avoid virtual channel conflicts with border stations, though they really don't say much. (I had not noticed until now that the Navojoa filing expressed concern about border cities.) Our fears of double channel 7s and double channel 13s are not founded, but there's going to be a lot of confusion. A "next-channel-number-up" situation could put Azteca 7 on 8, for instance, or Azteca 13 on 14 (or, as would be the case in El Paso because of KFOX, 15). RNZI wll be running on a single transmitter for both analog & DRM :/ SO now you won't be able to try DRM on 9890 while 9700 is on air :( (Rafman, June 24, WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: RNZI MOVES TO A ONE-TRANSMITTER OPERATION 3:09 pm on 24 June 2016 http://www.radionz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/307195/rnzi-moves-to-a-one-transmitter-operation Information for individual analogue short-wave listeners in the Pacific region. RNZ International (RNZI) is retiring its 27-year-old analogue-only short-wave transmitter and moving to a one-transmitter operation. From 1 July 2016 we will be using our newer digital/analogue transmitter and swapping between its digital short-wave and analogue short-wave modes throughout each day. RNZ International (RNZI) is retiring its 27 year old analogue-only short-wave transmitter and moving to a one-transmitter operation. The digital short-wave mode delivers a signal to relaying Pacific stations, and the analogue short-wave mode reaches individual short- wave listeners. RNZI has made the decision not to replace the old short-wave transmitter, but to instead maximize the flexibility of our newer short-wave transmitter by using either its analogue or digital mode to deliver to different audiences at different times of the day. We are also focusing on broadening the options for delivering our signal to relaying radio stations. These stations broadcast our daily news and current affairs content over their own local stations - and allow us to reach a large local Pacific audience. By working with partners like the BBC World Service (Pacific stream) and Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited (PCBL) (which includes the former TVNZ satellite service) we've been extending our content delivery via satellite. We'll be continuing to focus on this as a complimentary delivery to the DRM digital short-wave service. RNZI's online content and delivery, partnerships and use of our specialist content by individuals, media and organisations in the Pacific and worldwide, is also growing. The move to a one-transmitter operation will result in a reduced service to current individual short-wave listeners in the region. RNZI will still broadcast in analogue short-wave for extensive periods of each day, but there won't be a 24 hour service as there has been. This is likely to be most felt during breakfast hours when we will need to broadcast a digital signal for relaying stations, rather than an analogue one. However, RNZI remains committed towards providing an analogue short- wave service for individual listeners across the Pacific. Our role in warning about, and covering, cyclones remains especially important. During cyclone season, RNZI has the flexibility to choose to broadcast entirely in analogue if we need to temporarily provide a fulltime service to individual listeners. Over time we hope more individuals will be able to access our content online access the region. Online use of RNZI is growing quickly with Pacific visitors and others now increasingly accessing content on the RNZI site. And in future years, as stations adopt other ways of receiving our signal, we may be able to devote more of our short-wave transmission capacity back into broadcasting in analogue. With a mix of analogue short-wave, digital DRM short-wave, satellite, partnerships and online content delivery, we remain in a solid position to deliver our unique Pacific content to audiences in the region and beyond. Our analogue and digital frequency schedule is available at http://www.rnzi.com along with with updated broadcast times. http://www.radionz.co.nz/international/listen [But NOT YET the single-frequency schedule! --- gh] See below Linden Clark RNZI Manager Radio New Zealand Linden.clark@radionz.co.nz info@rnzi.com (via DXLD, also via Mike Terry, dxldyg, and Artie Bigley, Ivo Ivanov, WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) It`s telling that RNZI does not even expect any individuals to listen to them in DRM --- just as feeder for relays. Why aren`t satellite feeds sufficient (and perhaps more reliable) for Pacific relayers, like countless other stations use? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) My reception of RNZI on 15720 around 0400 and 11725 after 0500 has been quite good lately. Hope those transmissions continue. Looks like the 100 kW Thomson transmitter from 1990 didn't have the longevity of the old AWA 7.5kw units that operated 1948-90. I guess the plans for a new 300 kW transmitter (mentioned for years in the WRTH) are now dead? (Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) A strange press release text received today. RNZi has made the decision not to replace the old Thomson made short-wave transmitter of 1989 / 1990 year. I guess the Swiss-French made AM/DRM transmitter of Ampegon-Thales in Rangitaiki is already few years in performance service, at least since Nov 2006 year. And the other unit of Thomson is of approx. 1989 / 1990 year. That's the future in radio, to move service to web online access on the Pacific outer islands too (Wolfgang Büschel, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 24, BCDX 27 June via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) From July 1, 2016 Radio New Zealand International moves to a one transmitter operation. (Ivo Ivanov, QTH: Sofia, Bulgaria, June 24, dxldyg via DXLD) Glenn, How will this affect NA listeners? (Artie Bigley, OH, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Artie, We won`t know for sure until the new schedule is posted, and it still has not been. Maybe not much, since the only current DRM transmission at a time when we can get it either way, is 07-08, UT M- F. The others are in our daytime (Glenn to Artie, via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) Hello, Does someone knows if RNZI has a transmitter (at least a smaller one) in reserve? It is a bit risky to operate a service without a reserve transmitter. A fire or a simple transmitter break can discontinue the whole shortwave service of RNZI without a fast replacement of the broadcast. Does other DXERs realised that "The digital short-wave mode delivers a signal to relaying Pacific stations ..." Is RNZI the first station to use DRM as a distribution platform to other (relaying) stations for rebroadcast its feed? Does DRM signal provides the same stability as a satellite feed? "During cyclone season, RNZI has the flexibility to choose to broadcast entirely in analogue if we need to temporarily provide a fulltime service to individual listeners." Only question marks appeared in me reading the above statement. How do their listeners will know when a special broadcast takes place when they don't listen because formerly it was a DRM buzzing sound? Why shall they listen a buzz waiting if once someone will switch a button to turn the transmitter into analogue mode? Consumers - as well as listeners - doesn't like last minute changes and they don't react very positively to these last minute changes. Regards, (Tibor Gaal, Budapest, Hungary, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Well, the fast replacement would presumably be a third-party facility. Broadcast Australia would be a potential provider of course. "Retiring" not necessarily means that they will within days hire some guys who will break apart the transmitter and dump anything into a scrap container, with the collection of spare parts on top. On the other hand a major incident in the transmitter room could easily knock both transmitters out. Be that as it may: It appears that they indeed no longer have own back-up facilities. I understand that the ancient shortwave transmitters of the Titahi Bay station had first been kept when Rangitaiki went on air. They even still appear to be there, as shown at http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/none/galleries/Titahi%20Bay%20Transmitter%20Site But the antennas are gone. Only a single 135 metres mast for quintuplized mediumwave transmissions is left now if the descriptions are correct. ``Does other DXERs realised that "The digital short-wave mode delivers a signal to relaying Pacific stations ..." Is RNZI the first station to use DRM as a distribution platform to other (relaying) stations for rebroadcast its feed?`` At least I never heard of anyone else doing this. But of much greater interest (if still of interest at all) should be how it is a matter of course now that DRM is run for this purpose only and direct service to listeners means AM. ``Does DRM signal provides the same stability as a satellite feed?`` It already makes me shudder that such a signal source with less than 20 kbps is used for FM broadcasting at all. ``"During cyclone season, RNZI has the flexibility to choose to broadcast entirely in analogue if we need to temporarily provide a fulltime service to individual listeners." Only question marks appeared in me reading the above statement. How do their listeners will know when a special broadcast takes place`` From earlier programming? I don't see a problem here, since this will not come completely unannounced. And they consider emergency information here (Kai Ludwig, ibid.) Some anonymous remarks from the region: Standard lament about right- wing government that has not increased the budget of Radio New Zealand in the eight years since it assumed office. The reason for a break of operations with the old transmitter some months ago was that they had no money for a new tube. No information available about the real use of the DRM feed service, probably they just can not swiftly dispose of it after spending quite some money on it. From my side: The dish size needed to receive the Intelsat 19 signal is around three metres (the usual C-band monster as seen on a lot of SWBC transmission facilities), which may be an issue. Intelsat 19 delivers also BBC World Service and NHK World but not Radio Australia, which may have rebroadcasters in the Pacific, too (Kai Ludwig, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) So, any prediction on the final analogue transmitter transmission? (Walt Salmaniw, BC, dxldyg via DX LISTENNIG DIGEST) The present RNZi website shows only 3 DRM mode transmissions, in range 1651 to 2050 UT, {i.e. 7330, 9700, and 11725 kHz will be ceased?} Remaining time will be still in AM mode on a single transmitter in future? ``NB: Every month on the first and third Wednesday it is Maintenance day at our transmitter site from 2230-0600 UT (Thursdays 1030-1800 NZST) During this period there may be interruptions to our programmes`` 73 wb (Wolfgang Büschel, DXLD) The actual RNZI schedule has DRM transmssions from 1651 to 1850 on 5975 kHz (7330 kHz in AM), 1850-1950 on 9760 kHz (both to Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga, 9700 kHz in AM) and from 1951-2050 on 11690 kHz to the Pacific (11725 kHz in AM). It could mean that there will be no analogue broadcasts between 1651 and 2050 UT in future. Analogue transmissions may be in the time period 2050/2051-1650 UT except for maintenance on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 2230-0600, at that time there will be no broadcasts (Manfred Reiff, dxldyg via DXLD) Finally the new schedule appeared UT June 30: UTC kHz Target Days Schedule Updated 30/06/2016 0000-0458 15720 (AM) Pacific Daily 0459-0658 11725 (AM) Pacific Daily 0659-1058 9700 (AM) Pacific Daily 1059-1258 9700 (AM) PNG Daily 1259-1650 6170 (AM) Pacific Daily 1651-1858 7330 (AM) Pacific Sat 1651-1850 5975 (DRM) Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa Sun-Fri 1850-1950 9760 (DRM) Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa Sun-Fri 1859-1958 9700 (AM) Pacific Sat 1951-2050 11690 (DRM) Pacific Sun-Fri 1959-2058 11725 (AM) Pacific Sat 2051-0000 15720 (AM) Pacific Daily So the three DRM segments are daily except UT Saturday when reverts to AM but not on same frequencies (via Glenn Hauser, DXLD) ** NEW ZEALAND. It struck my eye because it's just three kilometres away from the Rangitaiki shortwave transmitter. Could even be involved in the audio routing to the shortwave facility if there is really a mediumwave facility and a microwave link to it. By the way, checking out Google Streetview is really worth here simply for getting a general impression of the area. And along with 1390, the nasty spurs perpetually putting hets on 1420 and 1360. Very unusual for KCRC, instead of NSP = non-stop programming/no silent period (remember those?). So I concentrate on DXing something on 1390 itself from 0530 UT to 0550 UT, but nothing ever emerges above the pileup and even some splash from KRCM. Except with BFO I do detect one signal very slightly on the hi side of 1390, roughly E/W. Maybe better at SRS? KZLS is sibling station to KCRC 1390 which was off the air night before. 1640, June 24 at 0553 UT, KZLS is still OFF, like earlier in evening. Possibly correlates with a non-severe storm which recently moved thru the Hennessey transmitter site area (but not Enid); and nobody has got out to the site to reset something (if not more serious). So I make a cursory check of the HF hambands, June 25 from 1936. Nothing on 18 or 21 MHz, so no point in even trying 24 or 28. 14 MHz has a lot of signals, but all weak during awful propagation conditions. 3 MHz has no signals at all, at midday. That leaves 7 MHz, which does bear a lot of FD activity, mostly weak too, except for: W5HTK, Enid Amateur Radio Club, S9+60, stronger than any SW broadcasters by skywave reach here, since it`s only a few blox away? Or in a Field a bit further. Keeps QSYing, calling CQ Field Day, from 1934 on LSB: 7201, 7204, 7207, 7219, 7239 by 1943. The Enid ARC website http://www.enidarc.org bears nothing at all to promote Field Day, not even on its calendar, but rather: ``The ETN Community Spotlight proudly presents The Enid Amateur Radio Club`` https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDqEquwKhKg&feature=youtu.be%22%22 A segment on the local cable-access channel usurped by Enid city government from the late lamented Pegasys. [Re 16-25]: Thanks for the listen, Glenn. You are correct in assuming changes in the schedule. We are changing things up a bit on the schedule starting this week. I'm cutting back to 30 minutes/week on WBCQ but have recently added 30 minutes/week on WINB as well as two slots on 890 AM KTLR, daytime medium wave station in Central Oklahoma, which allegedly may make it up to Enid [it certainly does --- gh] Rationale for changes is that I'm trying to match the right content to the right station/listeners. Notwithstanding Brother Scare, most of their [WBCQ] most-listened-to programs are non-religious in nature. WINB, on the other hand, is mostly a religious station, but also has the added bonus of having cheaper air time, so I decided to try them out for Mennonite Radio. And as for the local OKC metro medium wave station --- that's an experiment. I'm not sure I'll keep both time slots over the long-haul but I am pretty sure we will be there for the foreseeable future. I am having to improve my recording/editing skills for the local/daytime medium wave context as listeners can hear many of the noise issues that were previously concealed with the static background of shortwave DX. The schedule as it stands now is as follows: Thursdays, 2330-2400 UT WBCQ, Monticello, ME, USA 7490 kHz for now will be one of our non-religious BSR programs (Exploring Aspergia, Peace Buzz, Nappy Roots Radio), but I'm thinking about maybe transitioning this into a variety/magazine format show, akin to the English language programs of RHC. Friday, 1600-1615 UT (11-11:15 am CDT) KTLR, Oklahoma City, OK USA 890 kHz (medium wave) 15 minute variety/magazine format show, often airing Mennonite Minute and Quick Note from Pointing Left Media Sundays 0330-0400 UT WINB, Red Lion, PA, USA 9265 kHz 0330-0400 UT Mennonite Radio Sundays, 1300-1400 UT (8-9 am CDT) KTLR, Oklahoma City, OK USA 890 kHz (medium wave) 1st half hour is Mennonite Radio 2nd half hour is alternating between other BSR programs - Exploring Aspergia, Nappy Roots Radio, Peace Buzz, etc. Mondays Channel 292, 6070 kHz 1400-1500 UT 1st half hour - Alternating between Mennonite Radio & Exploring Aspergia 2nd half hour - Music programming, but possibly other shows - Peace Buzz normally airs at least once per month in Europe. DUT1+dUT1: by double pulse. RWM is the radiostation emitting DUT1 information in accordance with the ITU-R code and also giving an additional information, dUT1, which specifies more precisely the difference UT1-UTC down to multiples of 0.02 s, the total value of the correction being DUT1+dUT1. Positive values of dUT1 are transmitted by the marking of p second markers within the range between the 21st and 24th second so that dUT1 = +p X 0.02 s. Negative values of dUT1 are transmitted by the marking of q second markers within the range between the 31st and 34th second, so that dUT1 = -q X 0.02 s (via Langley, ibid.) ** RUSSIA. 7295, Radio Sakha on June 28 noted with clearly a major change in transmitter assignments. Ever since I first heard R. Sakha on May 7, the 7345 signal had been many times stronger than // 7295; that had been the case until today; certainly now 7295 is the stronger transmitter (250 kW?) and // 7345 is the much weaker one (100 kW?), with 7345 mostly blocked by CNR1 after 1101. 1117-1300*: seemed in Russian; played some pop songs, but also very nice segment (1215-1300) of traditional Russian music and songs; 1200 & 1300 brief IS of Jew's harp and time pips. New sign off time for weekdays? My audio of a portion of today's programming at https://goo.gl/JUvBrH Would like to think my email to R. Sakha on May 16, which alerted them to the reactivation of CNR1 (China) on 7345, had something to do with their decision now to switch transmitter assignments (Ron Howard, Pacific Grove, CA, Etón E1, antenna: Par Electronics EF-SWL, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DX LISTENING DIGEST) There are also widely divergent azimuths for the two frequencies which would also account for differences in strength. Originally according to Ivo: 7295 250 kW was 45 degrees, 7345 100 kW was 310 degrees. Perhaps they had really been reversed as now Ron has 7295 much stronger on the beam toward North America as one would expect rather than toward Europe. Is the reversal also evident there? Their use and configuration could have been changed over time, in particular of course when the southern side had to be superseded. What can be said for sure is that 279 kHz now goes out from this eastern site, and probably so already before 2011. The same should now go for 576 kHz, if still on air. It would give a clue when the date can be determined at which the current Bing and Yandex imagery of the southern site has been taken. It both shows one spray pond in operation, which would be a clear sign of either or both 279/576 kHz still being operated there if the imagery is post-2011, i.e. taken when the shortwave transmitters were no longer on air. The official height data for 576 kHz indicates a ShARRT-257 antenna*). Report by the Comptroller and Auditor General BBC World Service Press Release 28 June 2016 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/news/press_releases/2016/bbc_world_service The BBC World Service has used savings generated since 2010 to invest in new digital and television services, and has successfully reduced its expenditure at a lower cost than expected, according to todays’ report from the National Audit Office. There is, however, scope to improve the approach to target setting and performance reporting. The BBC World Service is an international broadcasting service that provides radio, television and online services in 29 languages. Since 2010, it has invested in new digital and television services, integrated its services more closely with the rest of the BBC, and in doing so, delivered efficiencies, and achieved an estimated audience of 246 million in 2015-16. In managing its transformation, the Service has closed five language services, opened one new one, and broadened the range of platforms it uses to reach its audience. The NAO’s analysis of financial data indicates that, by 2014-15, the Service had reduced its annual expenditure by £46.8 million, compared to a baseline set in December 2010. The one-off implementation costs have been lower than expected as the Service has made fewer staff redundant than planned. The NAO finds that the Service’s targets for audience size for a three-year period to 2016-17, set by the BBC Trust and Foreign & Commonwealth Office, were set at or below the Service’s forecast levels, and two of three were achieved in the first year. Despite this, they were not formally reviewed. Among the NAO’s recommendations is that the BBC Trust and FCO should provide for an arrangement to review targets. The NAO finds that the Service has made a proportionate attempt to estimate the size of its audience, but could be clearer about the methods and uncertainty associated with the two key approaches it uses – on audience size and satisfaction – to report on its performance, and report publicly on a broader range of measures, and in more depth. The Service has reported that it has met its targets on audience satisfaction, but this is based on data for BBC News as a whole as the BBC considers that its overseas audiences do not distinguish between its different overseas brands. . As the BBC continues to integrate its news services, it will become increasingly challenging for it to identify the performance of specific services. Today’s report also finds that when the World Service has recommended language services for opening or closure, it is not clear how it has taken cost-effectiveness into account, despite this being one of the stated criteria it uses for this purpose. Nick Prettejohn, Chair of the BBC Trust’s Value for Money Committee, said: "Last year, the World Service reached, on average, 246 million people around the world each week with impartial and independent news and current affairs. This follows a period of sustained cost cutting, increased competition from other broadcasters and a shift in the Service’s focus from radio towards a broader range of content across TV, radio, and online. This is a remarkable achievement and I am pleased that in their report today the NAO recognise that the Service has delivered Value for Money." Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office, said today: "The BBC World Service has successfully delivered much of what it set out to do in 2010, and has achieved value for money. "With its core funding protected as part of the Government’s White Paper on the future of the BBC, the Service now faces the new challenge of optimising the additional funding of £289m it will receive over the next four years. "The processes for setting its targets should encourage greater ambition, and the Service should look to report a broader range of performance information to give licence fee payers the confidence that it will continue to deliver value for money" (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) ** U K [non?]. If you happen to experience co-channel interference consisting of voice and/or music, the robustness of the Olivia 16-1000 mode in combination with the higher audio frequency might allow a successful decode. At 40 words per minute, Olivia 16- 1000 is faster than Olivia 64-2000. Confirmed at 0600, 0700 and 0900 UT, all as scheduled. More videos will be added http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.bg/2016/06/final-day-of-radio-libertysvoboda-in.html -- 73! (Ivo Ivanov, QTH: Sofia, Bulgaria, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) While already no longer shown at http://www.svoboda.org/howtolisten/affiliates.html But first I would wait for tomorrow, considering the possibility that the left hand does not know whether the right one will no longer put them on shortwave beginning in the morning of June 26 or will stop doing so in the evening of that day (Kai Ludwig, Germany, ibid.) But probably RL Belarusian stop broadcasting on shortwave from today, June 26 0400-0500 on 6075, 6105 - no signal today June 26 1500-1800 on 9645-no signal on June 25, 15410 confirmed on June 25 (Ivo Ivanov, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) And SW frequencies no longer mentioned for broadcasts in Belarussian. But heard at 0420 on 6105 this Sunday (Jean-Michel Aubier, France, June 26, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I just heard a bird chirping that IBB uses to implement changes to its Top Secret, For Eyes Only, NOFORN and WTF schedule around 1000/1100 UT: Indeed at some point around 1000 I found 15195 empty. Which, however, does not necessarily say that no such 19 mB signal went out from within Germany anymore. And include also RFE/RL Tajik, Turkmen and Uzbek in further monitoring. It was my suspicion from the start that these services will be taken off shortwave as well (Kai Ludwig, 1116 UT June 26, ibid.) But I`ve observed and recorded Russian broadcast on 15195 kHz at 1000 UT, June 26. Videos will be added after few minutes. Next transmission is 1300 UT on 13720, 15195, 17850 (Ivo, 1227 UT, ibid.) IBB Radio Liberty/Svoboda in Russian continues on shortwave, June 26. Confirmed at 06, 07, 09, 10 UT. But nothing at 13 UT on 13720, 15195, 17850. See first 5 videos: http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.bg/2016/06/final-day-of-radio-libertysvoboda-in.html -- 73! (Ivo Ivanov, QTH: Sofia, Bulgaria, ibid.) Usual US IBB operational schedule lasts the following day till 10 / 11 or 12 UT, according Washington central bureau time. All shortwave have gone now. Monitoring list still shows the MW 1386 and 738 kHz services, as well as FEBC, South Korea and RRI Bucharest Russian services remain. wb (Wolfgang Büschel, 1340 UT June 26, DXLD) Just to make sure: "All" means that services for Belarus, Caucasus, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan were no longer on their previous shortwave frequencies, too? (I was out until right now and did not bother to take a radio with me.) By the way, one comment under the closure announcement at svoboda.org went "now one can throw all shortwave radios away". Monitoring 738 kHz is for whom? Polskie Radio? (The other stuff relayed there is of little relevance anyway.) And any further observations about Biblis frequencies missing already yesterday? Here the question would be since when. I suspect that already on Friday, during regular working hours, someone went out to the Biblis plant and flipped the very big switch. [see also GERMANY] If really all "classic" RFE/RL is gone from shortwave, the next question will be if Lampertheim transmitters are still in use, on the very few other slots scheduled for them (Kai Ludwig, 1801 UT June 26, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Tajik was heard today at 1600-1700 on 7475 and 11910 and Uzbek at 1600-1700 on 9390 and 11790. Also avar (?) at 1600-1620 on 11780 or 11815 (unfortunately, I don't remember the single frequency which was on). Nothing on 9645 and 15410 (Belarussian at 1500) (Jean-Michel Aubier, France, 1812 UT June 26, WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Avar: Presumably 11815, supposed to originate from Woofferton. 11780 was Biblis, for which thus no substitute has been arranged. Otherwise I must say that I find the silence deafening. This http://www.bbg.gov/blog/2016/06/10/radio-free-europeradio-liberty-announces-thomas-kent-as-new-president/ gives just some biography but no background whatsoever, unless I fail to recognize it between the lines. So all I have is an account of a recent visit at RFE/RL, in their hailed new Alcatraz where they have set up the studio containers from the Federal Assembly building again, as my source saw with great disbelief. What are they doing there? Rewriting newswire, I was told. And someone else said that he can essentially confirm my quick impression: Lots of telephone blather, preferably with Kremlin astrologers (Kai Ludwig, 2037 UT June 26, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Looks like yesterday's Radio Liberty in Russian broadcast was the last evening broadcast on SW. I recorded it from 1922 until 2200 UT using the U. Twente receiver on 5995 kHz, switching to 9540 kHz for the last hour. Looked for them just now but they're not there. The first part of my recording is a jazz program. How fitting that this should be one of Radio Liberty's last Russian SW broadcasts considering how important jazz radio programs from the west were during the Cold War. I'll try to get the recording up on the archives in the next few days and will report back when it's done (Richard Langley, NB, 1914 UT June 26, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Cancelled shortwave: Avari, Belarussian, Kabardian, Russian and Caucasus Echo. At 1600 on 11780/11815 not Avar, but is Chechen. Videos of all Tajik, Turkmen, Uzbek and Chechen will be added tomorrow (Ivo Ivanov, 2030 UT June 26, WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) 1600-1620 on 11780 Biblis and 11815 Woofferton is Chechen, deleted Avari and Kabardian. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) see OKLAHOMA [and non] 7489.97-AM, UT Sat June 25 at 0101, tune-in to `Allan Weiner Worldwide` as he is lamenting that the WBCQ electric bill, already in 5-figures, has gone up $500 since last month without using any more power --- but he has no intention of raising airtime rates, including the $25/hour special for 5 and 9 MHz. Soon he wants to give some program notes updates, which he gets from Robert (ex-UK) on the phone, including: even prisoners are welcome to do shows on WBCQ, and one such will be tomorrow at midnight ET (presumably meaning UT Sunday June 26 at 0400), playing music, `Ted Frog Radio` (or something like that). `Tom Cole Radio` theater will present ``No Longer a Normal Man``, this Sat at 5 pm ET [21 UT] on 7490, same half-hour played twice. Also repeats Tue at 8 pm [UT Wed 0000] on 7490 [or is that something else? My scribbling unclear]. Despite my local noise QRM, it was well intelligible. Great job, Jeff - keep it up!!! WEB TECHNOLOGY HELPS NPR EXTEND ITS REACH Far from having an existential crisis, we and our member stations have a clear vision of our goals and purpose. June 22, 2016 12:39 p.m. ET "Public Radio's Existential Crisis" (Arena, June 17) overstates the issues confronting National Public Radio as it, like every other major media organization, navigates the digital transition. NPR's news magazines have continued to reach a growing radio audience that at latest count includes more than 26 million listeners weekly. At the same time, NPR is at the top of the podcast rankings. According to Podtrac, no other publisher reaches more listeners through podcasts than NPR--7.5 million a month. Many are listening to broadcast as a result of their podcast experience. Far from having an existential crisis, we and our member stations have a clear vision of our goals and purpose. Our mission is to comprehensively deliver the highest quality of news and entertainment programs to audiences that are increasingly underserved by others. We are well positioned to do this. Our members aren't just radio stations. They are local not-for-profit organizations engaged with their communities. Their local knowledge is unmatched. Whether you listen on the radio or online, we provide reporting on everything from your neighborhood to the other side of the world. The massacre at the Pulse nightclub illustrated how we fulfill our mission. Within hours we were on the air and online nationally with continuous coverage by reporters from NPR and our Florida stations. Our goal was clarity and insight at a moment of terror. KDFN is not the unID producing the noise at night. I could occasionally hear this noise during the trip down and back to our motel on the car radio. And --- today on our trip down from Poplar Bluff to Little Rock there was no sign of KDFN. 1500 kHz was dead, just regular static/background noise - nothing from KDFN from closest approach on Hwy 67 south of Poplar Bluff to Arkansas border - no KDFN. I would expect something from a 1 kW station at 25 miles - nothing! Have they been reported off the air??? Or does the local terrain have terrible ground conductivity limiting signal to few miles? I did not get a chance to get a compass fix on the 1500 kHz noise at Poplar Bluff - but we will be back in Popular Bluff Sunday night. We will be here in Little Rock for a few days and Ill try for a compass bearing here in the next few days (Tom Jasinski, IL, June 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Ground conductivity in the Ozarx area is rather poor but don`t see how it could be that bad. I hadn`t heard about KDFN being off, but a lot of stations go silent, temporarily or even permanently without any notice (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Glenn: On the way back home from Little Rock on Monday my wife and I drove through Doniphan in the daytime on Hwy 160 - KDFN is completely off the air. We stopped at the local town museum and a volunteer there said they were bought out, not sure by whom though. So, as I mentioned previously, the noise on 1500 kHz is definitely not coming from them. I brought along a Tecsun PL380 and an Eton E100, both with the stock antennas. They are painfully inadequate for the task. At Poplar Bluff, MO, noise on 1500 was heard on fade up's every few minutes and for only a few seconds - not long enough for a good null for DF bearing. I should have brought along my R8A and Quantum loop but did not have the time to pack them for traveling. From sunny La Habana (Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich, via Ivo Ivanov, DXLD) The contempt is mutual. I am not making things up when I log and report countless self-caused problems with RHC transmissions, which often cause collateral damage (just as I do for USA stations when they occur. It`s called honest journalism). Non-professional? Well, I do have 60 years` experience in shortwave monitoring, in the real world. Arnie accusing me of ``anti-Cuban`` comments, is another BIG LIE --- he would have us believe that the Castro regime is identical to Cuba. Opposing the regime is forbidden inside Cuba, but those of us who oppose it from abroad are nothing but PRO-CUBAN, and that includes the exile broadcasters, who are of course themselves, CUBAN! It is the Cuban PEOPLE who deserve to be FREE from the dictatorial regime imposed on them by FORCE so long ago. Yet, in American terms I am a leftist, and would support certain aspects of socialism, but the Cuban Commies RUINED it. By ABOLISHING human rights to implement it! BTW2, the presence of ``anti-Chinese`` broadcasters in HFCC does not keep the ChiCom from participating (altho they do manage to ban Taiwan); in fact they take advantage of HFCC in order to facilitate jamming of countless broadcasts, more accurately than Cuba can achieve. This is unavoidably personal, because Arnie justifies jamming and no doubt in his frequency-management role helps to implement it (tho he NEVER discusses that). Some of my broadcasts are jammed, thanks to Arnie`s collusion. If he and his henchmen ever had enough confidence in the unelected regime to allow dissent, this would be a very different situation (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) PUBLICATIONS ++++++++++++ AWR QSL CARDS Adventist World Radio is issuing a new QSL card at the time of the Wavescan 2016 Grand Finale DX Contest. FCC TRIES TO FIND OUT --- arstechnica.com By Jon Brodkin June 22, 2016 The US Federal Communications Commission is trying to figure out exactly how much trouble is being caused by radio noise. Many devices emit radio frequency energy that could interfere with radio services and increase the "radio spectrum noise floor," essentially the sum of all unwanted signals. The FCC is planning to study changes to the noise floor from human-made sources over the past 20 years. It's commonly believed that "the noise floor in the radio spectrum is rising as the number of devices in use that emit radio energy grows," but the FCC said it hasn't found much quantitative data to support this presumption. As a first step toward the FCC producing such a study, the commission last week asked the public for input on the proper design of the study and input on the problem itself. While there are already regulations limiting RF energy emissions, not all devices are regulated equally. The FCC inquiry notes that "incidental radiators" face little regulation and asks, "what sorts of government, industry, and civil society efforts might be appropriate to ameliorate the noise they produce?" "Radio spectrum noise is generated by many different types of devices. Devices that are not designed to generate or emit RF energy but do so as a result of their operation are called Incidental Radiators," the FCC said. "Most electric motors, light dimmers, switching power supplies, utility transformers and power lines are included in this category. There is little regulation governing the noise generated by these devices. Noise from such sources is expected to be minimized with 'Good Engineering Practices.'" The FCC mentioned several other classes of devices that can increase the noise floor. One category is "unintentional radiators" such as computers, portable electronic devices, and high-efficiency lights, which "send RF signals by conduction to associated equipment via connected wiring, but are not intended to emit RF energy." There are regulations limiting the levels of RF energy that can be emitted from these devices. There are also devices that are "designed to generate and emit RF energy by radiation or induction." Cellular phones and base stations, wireless routers, Bluetooth devices, broadcast TV and radio stations, radars, microwave ovens, arc welders, and fluorescent lighting all fall in this category. Despite regulations covering these devices, "Such emitters contribute to the noise floor with emissions outside of their assigned frequencies," the FCC said. "These are sometimes generated as spurious emissions, including, but not limited to, harmonics of desired frequencies and intermodulation products." After this description, the FCC public notice asks a series of questions, such as what are the most likely major sources of noise, what radio services are being affected the most by a rising spectrum noise floor, and at what levels does the noise floor cause harmful interference to particular radio services. The FCC further asks what frequency bands are of most interest, whether the problem is most pronounced indoors or outdoors, whether cities or rural areas are most problematic, and whether noise varies by season or time (night vs day). Finally, the FCC asks for specific ideas on how to conduct a noise study. Responses can be submitted here (make sure to specify the proceeding number, 16-191). The first comment comes from a longtime ham radio operator named William Gray, who says that interference in the past few years has "gotten much worse." Gray said that amateur radio services are "easily overwhelmed" by noise because they need to receive low-strength signals. Radio noise floor is likely rising, but we don't know how much. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/06/how-much-havoc-is-caused-by-unwanted-radio-signals-fcc-tries-to-find-out/ Posted by: (Mike Terry, June 27, dxldyg via DXLD) Re: FCC ADVISORS TACKLE NOISE FLOOR ISSUES I'm not really getting my hopes up, but I do hope they do SOMETHING to tackle the noise floor, not just in the MW broadcast band, but across the spectrum. As I was reading the article, I was thinking --- they should of course measure noise in a major city downtown area (like L.A., NYC, or Las Vegas), and also measure it in some remote place like western Texas or north central Nevada. Also, take care NOT to measure when there's any thunderstorm activity within range of propagation, if at all possible. (If possible, I'd also suggest measuring somewhere out in the middle of the ocean, with the vessel's power completely off, using battery / DC power for the measuring devices.) Also, if a test like this could be done someplace, measure the noise level in a moderately noisy city area under normal conditions, then have the utilities briefly shut off power completely, and measure the noise again. Personally, I'd like to see noise levels in major cities be brought down to the level of what they would be with the noisemakers shut off, or what it's like in rural areas. I've heard it said that with current noise levels, signals under 10 mV/m (or higher) usually aren't listened to in a major city. If manmade noise could be brought under control, could that minimum usable level for public listening be brought down to, say, 10 µV/m, or even 1 µV/m in the MW band? Or, what would be the limit cause by atmospheric noise under ideal conditions? For example, what's the noise floor, and how many dB above the noise floor would a signal need to be for a non-DXer to not consider it objectionable? 73, (Stephen [Ponder?], June 25, ABDX via DXLD) RADIO FREQUENCY LED LIGHTING PRODUCTS Federal Communications Commission Office of Engineering and Technology Laboratory Division June 17, 2016 INTRODUCTION Radio frequency (RF) light-emitting diode (LED) lighting products are subject to FCC rules to ensure that devices do not cause harmful interference to radiocommunications services. This KDB publication clarifies how the FCC rules apply to these products, and outlines manufacturers’ responsibilities for controlling interference. This publication does not address older legacy lighting technologies such as incandescent, fluorescent, and high intensity discharge (HID) lighting products. For the purpose of this publication, the term RF LED lighting is used for a device which has the primary function of generating light by electrically powering semiconductor materials. Such light generation is commonly intended for general illumination, and also includes other applications such as traffic signaling, roadway lighting, manufacturing processes, agriculture, etc. RF LED lighting devices intentionally generate RF energy via electronic power conversion or digital circuitry, but are not intended to radiate RF energy by radiation or induction and thus they are classified as unintentional radiators according to the FCC rules. RF LED lighting products today employ single or multiple LED chips, but can also include organic LEDs (OLEDs), polymer OLEDs, quantum dots, etc. In most cases, RF LED lighting devices employ either an independent or an integrated electronic driver that operates at RF frequencies similar to those used in digital electronic products. As such, RF LED lighting devices are subject to the Part 15 rules for unintentional radiators, and are subject to the “verification” equipment authorization procedure. These devices are required to meet the line - conducted and radiated emissions limits in Sections 15.107 and 15.109, respectively. With this KDB publication, we further clarify that RF LED lighting devices are subject to Section 15.109 radiated emission limits from 30 MHz to 1000 MHz to ensure overall compliance with radiated emissions requirements. . . Can anyone tell me more about this? How large are the antennas, how high are they mounted, etc? Any other advice on being successful at MS on the FM band? I have to do something to increase my totals—e-skip has been virtually a no-show this year (Les Rayburn, AL, WTFDA gg via DXLD) Les, while I'm not going to claim to be a MS King, I have logged over 100 FM stations via meteor scatter, mostly from when I lived in Colorado. While I had an APS 13 at 30' for regular FM dxing, I had a five element yagi dedicated for MS DXing, mounted four feet above the ground, in a five gallon bucket of concrete. The mast was set to a 10- 15 degree pitch before the fresh concrete set in the bucket. I kept it in a corner area of my privacy fenced backyard. Neighbors couldn't even tell it was there. It was very easy to go and reposition it if I wanted the antenna beam facing a different direction. I can tell you from 30 years experience in chasing after FM MS, if you want to be successful with meteor scatter DXing, you have to get the antenna low enough to the ground so that ground radiation will absorb as much of the local FM RF as possible. Most FM MS runs on a vertical pattern (NE-SW; NW-SE), although you can position FM antenna for what works for you best. It helps to be familiar with where the radiant in the sky is for a particular meteor shower that you are interested in working, as this will dictate the direction of the meteors. They could be traveling towards your QTH, away from your QTH, or parallel to your QTH. In each scenario, it will affect how much signal the antenna receives. Also remember, IF you are trying to record MS events (periods of time for occurring meteor showers), the best time of day is 2AM-10AM for night time showers and 8AM-3PM for daytime showers. Also, you want to capitalize on the earth's revolution into the comet debris field (core center of the meteor scatter debris). You need to also become familiar with which meteor showers produce the slowest velocity meteors and which ones are known to produce fireballs. JUST BECAUSE a meteor shower yields a high hourly rate does not indicate it would necessarily be a good candidate for meteor scatter DXing. Case in point - a meteor shower that is known to have a meteor velocity of 25/kps and only 15 m/avg per hour, would be a better choice for meteor scatter DXing than a meteor shower with a meteor velocity at 70/kps and 50 m/avg per hour. The point being, the slower meteors create more burn when entering the Earth's atmosphere and are readily known as *trains*. These meteor burns can last upwards of a minute or two and sometimes reflect signals from two or three stations as it crosses the sky. There are a lot of small details and nuances of this aspect of FM DXing in general. IF you are interested in discussing this even more, feel free to email me (Jim Thomas, Springfield, Missouri, WTFDA gg via DXLD) SOLAR FLUX INDEX VS GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY I have recently found an old book of mine from around 1980 ('Shortwave Listener's Guide' by H. Charles Woodruff) that had the following chart in it. I had remembered this chart but couldn't find it anywhere on the internet and I think it rather puts the solar-terrestrial indices in a context with overall HF conditions in a quick and dirty way. Shortwave Log : Photo http://swldx.tumblr.com/image/146267312382 The Three values listed on the graph (Solar Flux,Ap, and K indices) are precisely what WWV(H) reports at 18 minutes past the hour and in the following URL: ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/latest/wwv.txt One has to keep in mind during the ebbing of the solar cycle that the conditions will steadily improve with time when the geomagnetic field is quiet, and that rate is quicker with higher values of Solar Flux. Also, with lower Solar flux values (according to this graph, below 140) it doesn't take much Geomagnetic activity to quickly degrade overall conditions (Rodney Johnson, NV, June 24, dxldyg via DXLD) SUNSPOTS VANISH, AGAIN For the second time this month, the solar disk is blank -- no sunspots. This image of the sun taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory on June 24th shows zero dark cores: What does this mean? The solar cycle is like a pendulum, swinging back and forth between periods of high and low sunspot number every 11 years. Today's blank sun is a sign that the pendulum is swinging toward low sunspot numbers. In other words, Solar Minimum is coming. Forecasters expect the next Solar Minimum to arrive in 2019-2020. Between now and then, there will be lots of spotless suns. At first, the blank stretches will be measured in days; later in weeks and months. When the sunspot cycle reaches its nadir, a whole year could go by without sunspots. However, don't expect space weather to go away. Solar Minimum brings many interesting changes. For instance, as the extreme ultraviolet output of the sun decreases, the upper atmosphere of Earth cools and collapses. This allows space junk to accumulate around our planet. Also, the heliosphere shrinks, bringing interstellar space closer to Earth. Galactic cosmic rays penetrate the inner solar system -- and Earth -- with relative ease. Indeed, a cosmic ray surge is already underway. Cosmic rays can seed clouds, trigger lightning, and penetrate commercial airplanes. Our measurements show that someone flying back and forth across the continental USA, just once, can absorb as much ionizing radiation as 2 to 5 dental X-rays. This exposure will increase as Solar Minimum deepens. http://spaceweather.com/ Posted by: (Mike Terry, June 25, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) THE SUN HAS 'GONE BLANK' FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS MONTH: WHAT THAT MEANS -- Washington Post By Angela Fritz and Joe Kunches June 27, 2016 The sun is blank for the second time in less than a month — not a single dark sunspot mars its surface. It’s a sign our star is entering a new period of decreased activity — one that will continue to last for about five years. But, despite the overall decline, history has proven that some of the largest solar storms in memory can occur when sunspots appear to be ebbing. The sun is a volatile star. Its surface changes on a 11-year solar cycle that oscillates between periods of increased and decreased sunspot production. Sunspots are dark areas on the surface of the sun that indicate intense magnetic activity — so strong, in fact, that it inhibits solar convection and thus reduces the temperature of the sun in that location. Sunspots can be just a few miles wide, but the largest can span 100,000 miles in diameter, or more than 12 Earths across. These massive spots can be seen on the surface of the sun without a telescope, and they can be just half as hot as their surroundings. Sunspots are not just something for scientists to observe and track; their fluctuating existence has huge implications for our environment and technology here on Earth. [Could a weakening sun cancel global warming? No.] https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/post/could-a-quiet-sun-cancel-global-warming/2013/02/28/156b9f3e-81c8-11e2-a350-49866afab584_blog.html Sunspots are simply the observable sign of strong solar magnetic fields. Sometimes they are stable, and other times they are explosive. These reservoirs of strong magnetic field can fuel solar flares and coronal mass ejections that lead to radiation storms and geomagnetic storms on Earth that have the potential to drop-kick our modern way of life back to the stone age. It is a space weather forecaster’s job to determine if and when these storms will arrive so that — with enough warning — we can implement safeguards on our technology to prevent failure and lasting damage... Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. Tweet This future Sun, the authors note, is expected to not only have few if any sunspots, but also less coronal mass ejections Metcalfe thinks that there may even be a link to the onset of our Sun’s middle age and the evolution of life on Earth. The Sun has likely already entered into a new unpredicted long-term phase of its evolution as a hydrogen-burning main sequence star — one characterized by magnetic sputtering indicative of a more quiescent middle-age. Or so say the authors of a new paper submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Using observations of other sunlike stars made by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope, the team found that the Sun is currently in a special phase of its magnetic evolution. Heretofore, the Sun was thought to have been just a more slowly rotating version of a normal yellow dwarf (G-spectral type) star. These results offer the first real confirmation that the Sun is in the process of crossing into its magnetic middle age, where its 11-year Sunspot cycles are likely to slowly disappear entirely. That is, from here on out, the Sun is likely to have fewer sunspots than during the first half of its estimated 10 billion year life as a hydrogen-burning star. “The Sun’s 11-year sunspot cycle is likely to disappear entirely, not just get less pronounced; [since] other stars with similar rotation rates show no sunspot cycles,” Travis Metcalfe, the paper’s lead author and an astronomer at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., told me. . . http://www.forbes.com/sites/brucedorminey/2016/06/27/sun-has-likely-entered-new-evolutionary-phase-say-astronomers/#394283ba278e (via Russ Edmunds, 15 mi NW Phila, Grid FN20id, IRCA via DXLD) Thanks for posting this, Russ. Yet another take is the following: http://www.earth-syst-dynam-discuss.net/esd-2015-30/ (a link to the full paper can be found in the upper right corner of the page). A précis and discussion is at https://judithcurry.com/2016/06/27/are-we-headed-for-a-new-solar-minimum/ These links look at this from the perspective of the sun's effect on climate, but a quietening sun, periodic or otherwise, is of interest to DXers. best wishes, (Nick Hall-Patch, BC, ibid.) E-SKIP 2016 The link below is very interesting: http://www.vencoreweather.com/blog/2016/6/23/1015-am-the-sun-goes-blank-again-during-the-weakest-solar-cycle-in-more-than-a-century It claims this is the weakest solar cycle in more than 100 years, and that June has been unusually quiet. That said, I have had some decent new catches on the few Es days so far (Mike Hunter, W2MHZ, Neshanic Station, NJ, WTFDA gg via DXLD) There has been a lot of debate over the years with one side denying any link at all between Es and the sunspot cycle. The same group also denies any link between Es and strong storm fronts. The other side claims that the Es events which immediately precede or follow or accompany one or both of these things can't possibly be a repeating coincidence. I suppose the conclusion to be drawn here is that we just don't know (Russ Edmunds, Blue Bell, PA, ( 15 mi NW of Philadelphia ), ibid.) Despite our cries for lack of Es this season, to me that's part of the mystery and allure of it. We are all data loggers, providing valuable information (or lack thereof). There is one thing for certain, and that is the term for the propagation. Sporadic it certainly is, predictable beyond seasonal it certainly is not. The radios will be recording and monitoring will continue here through mid August (Steve K3PHL, near Alentown PA, ibid.) My question is: Are people posting less on this list and more in the other WTFDA outlets or is it just a catastrophic year for E-skip (so far anyway?). (Charles Gauthier, Québec, June 25, WTFDA gg via DXLD) Yes, there is less activity on this list than there used to be. Back in the day this was the main place to post DX but it's not anymore. WTFDA members post DX on the Facebook group now because it's so easy to do pictures and video there and there are almost 500 people there now. WTFDA Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/175722809234221/ There are some members who only post on the Forums. Then there's a group of people who post on the WTFDA Bulletin Board. And then some post on that other logger and only on that other logger. We are scattered all over the place. Who would have thought it would be this way back in 1980. And most of the logs that people get never make their way into the VUD. But that's another subject. Catastrophic year? IBOC is a catastrophe. All these flipping translators and LPFMs they threw on the FM Band are catastrophes. These are a couple of reasons that there's less DX reported. And then there's the lack of propagation the past few years. Charly, remember those years when you had FM E skip night after night around midnight? And on the TV end of it all, the end of analog is a catastrophe. First it was USA and Canada and now Mexico. How many DXers have thrown in the towel for those reasons. I'd say quite a few and I know some. In my case, FM DXing isn't the fun it used to be. It and TV DXing are more frustrating. I can't wait to see what happens after repacking. (Mike Bugaj, Enfield, CT, WTFDA gg via DXLD) It's a combination. Except for a few, the conditions have been awful for Es. But most of the postings during openings have migrated to the WTFDA Bulletin Board http://wtfdadxbb.vci.net/index.php (Russ Edmunds, ibid.) SWPC SWITCHES SATELLITES FOR PROPAGATION DATA Beginning at Noon EDT (1600 UTC) on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, SWPC will start using data from NOAA’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft in its operations. This data will replace the data currently provided by the ACE satellite. Details can be found on the SWPC website (SWPC NOAA via DXLD) :Product: Weekly Highlights and Forecasts :Issued: 2016 Jun 27 0346 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/weekly.html # # Weekly Highlights and Forecasts # Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 - 26 June 2016 Solar activity was very low during the entire summary period with only B-class flare activity observed. No Earth-directed CMEs occurred. No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 21-22 Jun and 25-26 Jun following coronal hole high speed stream events. Normal to moderate levels were observed on the remaining days. Geomagnetic field activity was quiet on 20-21 Jun. Mostly quiet conditions were observed early on 22 Jun but activity increased after 22/1800 UTC due to enhanced solar wind parameters and unsettled to minor storm levels were observed. Quiet to unsettled conditions with isolated active periods were observed on 23-24 Jun due to negative polarity CH HSS effects. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 25-26 Jun with an isolated period of active conditions observed from 26/2100-2400 UTC due to CH HSS effects. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 27 JUNE - 23 JULY 2016 Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the forecast period with a slight chance for C-class activity. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels from 27 Jun to 01 Jul following CH HSS effects. Normal to moderate levels are expected on 02-03 Jul as a CIR redistributes electrons. High levels are expected to return from 04-07 Jul following a recurrent CH HSS. Moderate levels are expected from 08-21 Jul followed by moderate to high levels on 22-23 Jul following another recurrent CH HSS. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to begin at unsettled to active levels but decrease to mostly quiet levels by midday on 27 Jun and remain quiet through 29 Jun. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected from 30 Jun to 05 Jul with isolated active conditions possible on 03 Jul due to a recurrent negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet conditions are expected on 06 Jul. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected from 07-12 Jul with minor storms possible on 11 Jul and active periods likely on 12 Jul due to effects from a recurrent positive polarity CH HSS. Mostly quiet conditions are expected to return from 13-18 Jul with unsettled periods possible on 14-15 Jul. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected on 19-21 Jul due to negative polarity CH HSS effects with an isolated active period likely on 19 Jul. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the period. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2016 Jun 27 0346 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2016-06-27 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2016 Jun 27 77 10 4 2016 Jun 28 80 5 2 2016 Jun 29 80 5 2 2016 Jun 30 80 10 3 2016 Jul 01 80 8 3 2016 Jul 02 80 8 3 2016 Jul 03 80 12 4 2016 Jul 04 80 10 3 2016 Jul 05 82 8 3 2016 Jul 06 82 5 2 2016 Jul 07 82 8 3 2016 Jul 08 82 10 3 2016 Jul 09 82 10 3 2016 Jul 10 82 8 3 2016 Jul 11 80 20 5 2016 Jul 12 82 12 4 2016 Jul 13 82 5 2 2016 Jul 14 80 8 3 2016 Jul 15 80 8 3 2016 Jul 16 80 5 2 2016 Jul 17 80 5 2 2016 Jul 18 78 5 2 2016 Jul 19 78 15 4 2016 Jul 20 78 12 3 2016 Jul 21 78 10 3 2016 Jul 22 78 5 2 2016 Jul 23 78 5 2 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1832, DXLD) GLENN`S PROPAGATION OUTLOOK FOR MEDIA NETWORK PLUS AS OF JUNE 30, 2016 Keith, Spaceweather.com says there were zero sunspots on June 24.
