Alaska's tallest structure has been destroyed in a controlled demolition using explosives. The 411m (1,350 ft) Long Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) tower on the Seward Peninsula was brought crashing down. The Coast Guard, who ordered the demolition, said the tower was deteriorating and at risk of collapse. [52 second video:] http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8653754.stm (via Dave Thorpe, Nov 16, BDXC-UK yg via DXLD) WHERE on the Seward? ** ALASKA. Re 10-45, HAARP ACTIVITY INDICATOR --- Hi Glenn; The HAARP site has a useful page at: http://maestro.haarp.alaska.edu/data/spectrum2/www/hf.html that shows received signals in the HF spectrum - including those transmitted by HAARP. The frequency resolution is pretty coarse but I often observe a solid yellow line just under 3 MHz (assume nominal 2750 kHz) and at other times, elsewhere in the HF spectrum. One can conveniently go back in the archives as well. 73 (Don VE6JY Moman, AB, Nov 13, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Yes, that correlates with the Nov 10 and 9 reports, as well as October 4 when I was getting HAARP at 12-13 UT. On that date it even shows every harmonic as high as x10 = 27500 bouncing back during the previous hour. From the homepage http://www.haarp.alaska.edu click online data, and then Spectrum Monitor Waterfall Charts, HF (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ALASKA [and non]. 9655, still trying to hear/confirm KNLS` scheduled English at 15-16: Nov 12 at 1459 I hear a familiar IS, but it`s RRI`s, which I realize bears some similarity to KNLS`s! 1500 Enescu theme and Romania scheduled in Arabic, but there is QRM de something. 9680, whilst checking for RRI, Nov 14 at 1401 I can hear the KNLS IS underneath, so we know that at least one transmitter is sometimes on the air. Contradicts its own one-transmitter sked at http://www.knls.org/broadcasting-front.html which shows 1300-1400 9680 31 Chinese 1400-1500 9615 31 Chinese so maybe they were late switching to 9615, which they would be well advised to use at both hours due to all the QRM on 9680; but that has never been a deterrent to the out-of-touch KNLS frequency management (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 9615, USA (ALASKA), KNLS at 1254 in English with ID, schedule and into a song. 1259 song ended, dead air and off just before 1300. Fair, Nov 15 (Harold Sellers, BC, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ALBANIA. 13640, Nov 13 at 1542 check of R. Tirana`s English to North America signal registers S9+15 but very undermodulated and I can`t make out what Klara is saying. Standard remark (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ALBANIA. 7345 -- no, not the long-established Czechoslovak use of this frequency, it's another Slavic language: Serbian, not from a European broadcaster, only from a transmitter in Europe, China Radio International via Cërrik (Kai Ludwig, Germany, circa 1215-1230 November 17, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ANTARCTICA. 15476, Nov 11 at 1439 at first no sign of LRA36, but then a carrier becomes JBA; nothing on 15480. 15476, Friday Nov 12 at 1412, JBA carrier from LRA36, and now there is something on 15480; see UNIDENTIFIED. 15476, can`t detect even a carrier from LRA36, Monday Nov 15 at 1401, 1443 chex. 15476, cannot detect even a carrier from LRA36, Nov 16 at 1411. 15476, again today no trace of even a carrier from LRA36, Nov 17 at 1406. Last time I could find it was Nov 12. Is anyone hearing it? (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Not Nov 18 or 19 either (gh) ** ARGENTINA. 2591-LSB, R Rivadavia (SSB Feeder), 0250 on Nov 15, con relato de fútbol. Probablemente se trata de estos enlaces que se mantienen por el Ejercito argentino con destino a la Antártida. Escuchada hace un mes atrás, también con fútbol, así que es muy posible que su sked sea coincidente con este tipo de eventos deportivos (Horacio A. Nigro, Montevideo, Uruguay, condigist yg via DXLD) 2591-LSB, R Rivadavia (SSB Feeeder), 0250 on Nov 15,with soccer match. Probably one of these military feeders beamed to Argentinian Antarctica Bases. Was heard before also with soccer so I believe their sked is coincident with this events (Horacio Nigro, Uruguay, Nov 15, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARGENTINA. 11710.74, 12/11 0104, Radio Nacional, slow songs, talks, weak. The day after the channel was dominated by China, till sign-off at 0130. Then weak/fair signal with songs on 11710.66 (Giampiero Bernardini, Milano, Italia, Perseus - ANT: T2FD, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARGENTINA. 15344.9, Nov 16 at 2158, RAE`s haunting IS and IDs, fluttery averaging S9+10, but sounds far-away and other-worldly; 2200 accurate timesignal, music, opening Spanish. Morocco not a problem, either already off or outfaded earlier. Only a sesquimonth to go before RAE has to close down unless it gets paltry funding to expel the PCBs from its transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRALIA. 2368.48, 1707-1733, R. Symban, Peats Ridge 11/11, non- stop Greek pop and folk songs with tentative OM short talk at 1710'06 - poor at the beginning under local noise, then more stable reception due to more good propagation (during local sunrise period in Australia as I think) First time heard here near St. Petersburg. Hope for a QSL (Mikhail Timofeyev, DXpedition near St. Petersburg, Russia, Drake R8A, two antennas directed to South-East Asia and North America, HCDX via WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DXLD) ** AUSTRALIA [non]. 13590, Nov 16 at 2207, fair signal with news in Strine, so could it be CVC Zambia, confirmed earlier today still on this frequency? No, now it`s Radio Australia with news of an accident in the Oz Antarctic, death of an aboriginal leader; 2209 references http://radioaustralianews.net.au This transmission is 22-24 UT, 100 kW due west via KHBN PALAU, a.k.a. T8WH Belau (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** AUSTRIA. 15440, fairly good signal Nov 13 at 1404 with South Asian vocal music, seemingly secular, but 1405 talking about Bible, Jesus Christ, AWR, and mailing address in Hyderabad, Pakistan, or urdu@awr.org It`s 300 kW, 90 degrees from Moosbrunn at 1400-1430 daily (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISENING DIGEST) ** BAHRAIN. 9745, Radio Bahrain, 0040-0135, Nov 12, reduced carrier USB, Local Mid-East style music. Weak but readable (Brian Alexander, PA, DX Listening Digest) ** BANGLADESH. 4750, 1452 15 Oct, Bangladesh Betar, sub-continent music, YL announcements, off mid pips 1500, SIO 252 (Alan Pennington, Kefalonia, Greece, Nov BDXC-UK Communication via DXLD) 4750, 1437-1442, R. Bangladesh, Dhaka 11/11, Bangla, OM news, YL report, OM talk again with some mentions of Bangladesh - very strong signal with good audio and CNR deeply in the background (Mikhail Timofeyev, DXpedition near St. Petersburg, Russia, Drake R8A, two antennas directed to South-East Asia and North America, HCDX via WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DXLD) ** BELARUS. 6155, Radio Belarus (Minsk/Kalodzicy), 2326-2335, 11/13/2010, Russian. Talk by a woman followed at 2327 by slow orchestral music. Announcement by a man at 2330, then talk by a man, woman, and others at remote locations. Poor to moderate signal with some fading. Much weaker parallel heard on 7390 (Jim Evans, Germantown, TN, IC-R75, RX-340, Random Wire (90'), ALA100M Loops (16' and 20'), DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BELARUS. At 1320 on center 7408 kHz some strange wobbling / oscillating signal noted here in Germany, - is that a Cuban jamming against Greenville 7405 kHz? Range 7405.2 to 7412.2 kHz covered. Nov 16. 73 wb (Wolfgang Büschel, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Today (Nov 17 around 1215/30) no trace of any signal here around 7405/10. Wouldn't 7.4 MHz be a bit too low to propagate from Cuba to Europe at this time, under broad daylight, anyway? But what I found was a rather bad, FMing spur on about 7420, and more spikes from the same modulation around 7470. Which modulation? The one from the 7360/7390 Minsk twins. The 15 x 5 kW ex-jamming transmitter block on 7360 has also developed a slight distortion, whether or not it may be related to the spurs. 7390, operated with an old transmitter that was already shut down for a decade or so, is cleaner but has a bit less upper mids and somewhat lower modulation. Both outlets show their own sort of a mild hum, reminiscent to grandmas radio, in particular 7390 where the hum has a pronounced 100 Hz component. Wow, this is truly old-school steam radio, especially since no obvious dynamics compression is in use, unlike the co-sited 250 kW transmitter that is off at this time of the day. One does not find such uncompressed, soft modulation too often these days (Kai Ludwig, Germany, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BELARUS. 7265, Belaruskaje Radyjo-2, Hrodna (= Grodno) (5 kW), verified my reception report with a frequency/site partial data Word attachment from the transmitter operator, Republic Unitary Enterprise Belarusian Radio-Television Center, in 26 days. Report was sent to inbox @ brtpc.by (which also appeared on the letterhead of the attachment), but the reply came from omts @ brtpc.by I presume either would be good for any future reports. The letter notes: "We are dreadfully sorry for such long time answering. Although we are very pleased that there are people who are interested in shortwave radio broadcasting outside borders of our country. We accept the fact of your reception our shortwave radio from Grodno At present time RUE "BRTPC" carries out radio translation of state radio programs "First National channel of Belarusian radio" and "Radio channel Culture" … RUE "BRTPC" wishes you to have a nice reception. We were amazed to receive your letter and thankful for your interest in us." (Richard D’Angelo/NASWA, Wyomissing, PA, U.S.A., DSWCI DX Window Nov 3 via DXLD) ** BOLIVIA. 5580.27, 2150-2202, R. San José, San José de Chiquitos, 11/11, Spanish, Latin American songs, OM/YL short announcement at 2200 with mention of "...música...el mundo..." - poor with local noise and utility-like QRM (could not find their signal during next check at 2259) (Mikhail Timofeyev, DXpedition near St. Petersburg, Russia, Drake R8A, two antennas directed to South-East Asia and North America, HCDX via WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DXLD) ** BRAZIL. 4877.8, presumed R. Difusora Roraima, Boa Vista, 0055-0119, Nov 16, Portuguese. M announcer with talk & ballad; into different ancr at 0101; sounds "live"; more mx & talk; poor. Quick re-check at 0234: strong sig with music and pulled the plug at 0236*; way off nominal 4875 (Scott R. Barbour Jr. Intervale, NH USA, NRD-545, MLB-1, 200' Beverages, 60m dipole, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BRAZIL [and non]. 11780, RNA is on at 0640 Nov 13, but once again, no sign of it on 6185, non // Cuban music from XEPPM, QRM-free. May it ever be so (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BRAZIL. 12174, center of hugely distorted blob, spur from SRDA, Nov 14 at 2244, hard to // to poor signal on 11765, but surely so as previously confirmed source (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BRAZIL. Cf. EQUATORIAL GUINEA: BTW, no hint now or anytime of R. Inconfidência, Brasil, recently reactivated on 15190; is anyone hearing it any more, or is it gone again? (Glenn Hauser, OK, Nov 16, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 15190, More than seven days without listen Radio Inconfidencia. Probably out of the air (Manuel Méndez, Lugo, Spain, Nov 17, Logs in Friol, Grundig Satellit 500 and Sony ICF SW 7600 G, Cable antenna, 10 meters, faced WSW, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** BULGARIA. 15700, Nov 14 at 1342 open carrier, strong with flutter, presumed R. Bulgaria which owns this channel, since it has that wacky policy of using -00 frequencies only. Currently registered at 11-14 is Sofia site in DRM, 50 kW, 306 degrees, but this was plain AM; perhaps this is inactive, and it was really Plovdiv, 300 kW, 306 degrees in early anticipation of 14-15 Bulgarian broadcast, which was indeed audible thence. 15700, R. Bulgaria, Nov 17 at 1458 with a familiar violin concerto, but accompanied by piano rather than orchestra. Unlike certain other stations, this one is allowed to reach its finale before a Bulgarian announcement. Tho I doubt the whole `concerto` had played uninterrupted during the previous semihour (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. 2749/USB, Halifax Coast Guard Radio; 0243-0250:43*, 14-Nov; Maritimes & Halifax Harbor marine wx; buoy relocations & research ship activity. HCGR ID without call at s/off. Good (Harold Frodge, Michigan Area Radio Enthusiasts DXpedition, Brighton MI, Drake R8B + 500 ft. NNE unterminated bev, 85 ft. T2FDO, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. 9624.89, 1826-1829, CBC Nord Quebec, Sackville, 11/11, English, OM phone talks with listeners - fair and even better at the beginning, then poor due to propagation, best in LSB to avoid RFE on 9625 (Mikhail Timofeyev, DXpedition near St. Petersburg, Russia, Drake R8A, two antennas directed to South-East Asia and North America, HCDX via DXLD) ** CHILE. 11920, Nov 14 at 0044 sign-off announcement does not mention Ecuador, just HCJB Global, via Santiago CVC transmitter, 11920, time 21:45, refer to http://www.hcjb.com.br for more programming. Still no spurs (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHILE. 17680, Nov 16 at 1202, CVC La Voz opening medical advice show in Spanish, ``Anti-Virus``. At least, I think it`s medical; S9+18 at usual excellent level (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA. 5770-5825, OTH radar pulsing, assumed from here, Nov 16 at 1348, just far enough away not to impede yet still unheard AFN; see GUAM (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA. Firedrake Nov 12: 8400, JBA at 1322; fair by 1343 when I am also getting it on 9350 9350, good at 1343. Gone at 1457 recheck 10500, JBA at 1322, but less so than on 8400; same at 1343 9350 is an unusual spot, but must have been irresistible for unheard Sound of Hope, as nothing at all is scheduled there except WWCR at 21- 23. Firedrake Nov 13: 10500, good with SAH at 1336. Presumably that`s a sign of Sound of Hope underneath it but could not make out any other modulation. Normally there is not even a SAH. Not found on 8, 9, or 11 MHz frequencies at this time, but did not do a full bandscan up to 18. 13580, Nov 14 at 0040, Chinese with echo. Since no Western station is scheduled here, this must not be jamming! But instead short/longpath echo, as CRI Chinese via Beijing site is scheduled at 0000-0157, 500 kW, 215 degrees. You`ve got a PR problem when the first assumption upon hearing your station is that it could be jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) EAST JAMMERSTAN: 10500 Crash & Bang CC Music Jammer; 1057, 14-Nov; Weak; only one hrd whole weekend (Harold Frodge, MI, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi there Harold and Glenn. Also heard this last night 15th November // 11100 at around 1000. The latter was much stronger but seemed to also be mixed in CRI in Indonesian. Same site perhaps as there were also spurs further up the band but didn't log them (Robin Harwood VK7RH, Norwood, Tasmania 7250, Radio Monitor SWLR-KS001, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 500 kW powerhouses at Kunming site ? 0930-1027 Malay 17680kun, 15135kun 1030-1127 Indonesian 15135kun, 11700kun 73 wb df5sx (Wolfgang Büschel, ibid.) So Indonesian on 11100 could be punchup error for 11700 (gh) Firedrake Nov 15: 8400, good at 1339 in drumming segment 10500, very good at 1351 but with some IADs No other found up to 18 MHz by 1358. Firedrake Nov 16: 8400, very poor with flutter at 1350. Not heard in the 9-14 MHz range before 1400. Firedrake Nov 17: 8400, JBA with flutter at 1347 10500, VP with flutter at 1354 11100, JBA at 1357 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA [and non]. 7220, Nov 15 at 1522, romantic piano music, then Japanese announcement, so it`s CRI at 15-16, 300 kW, 59 degrees from Jinhua site, and also USward, making it the SSOB below 7490; no QRhaM either, avoided by them. SSOB used to be R. Australia 7240, but not any more, weak something, tho still sked from 1400 to Pacific. 15230, CRI English via Sackville missing Nov 15 at 1442, leaving the frequency to Cuba which started using it last week instead of planned and short-lived 15390. The two had been colliding, Commies vs Commies, but apparently CRI has conceded, unusual for them. It`s scheduled 13- 15, so are both hours off, or moved elsewhere? Also still on 13675 via Sackville. While CRI English 15230 via Sackville, CANADA was missing yesterday before 1500, perhaps for a monitoring check, it`s back today, Nov 16 from 1405 onwards, still at 1443, and way atop RHC which also started using 15230 about a week ago, Commies vs Commies. Possibly Arnie picked the frequency in order to provoke me to exclaim that, should it amuse him. 13675, CRI English via Sackville, Nov 17 at 1454 not only has to contend with Habana 13680, Commies vs Commies, but self-imposed intermittent audio dropouts on 13675: these last a few sex each, much worse than the quick ones on VOI 9526-, making attempts to convey contact info and ``China Studio`` Chinese lessons fruitless (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** COSTA RICA. 5954.18, ELCOR - Radio República, 0340-0400*, Nov 11, Spanish talk. ID. Weak. Poor under jammer (Brian Alexander, PA, DX Listening Digest) 5954.2, 14/11 2300, Radio República, tx ELCOR. Political talks and some music, weak/fair. Long fading with some nice peaks (Giampiero Bernardini, Milano, Italia, Perseus - ANT: T2FD, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) No jamming audible? (gh) ** CROATIA. Deanovec is on 7370, now in use for an extended daytime period (Kai Ludwig, Germany, circa 1215-1230 November 17, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. 650, Radio Progreso, unknown site. 1127 November 14, 2010. Poor under WSM with female, parallel 640. This is the Progreso outlet noted in August, 2008 first appearing with test tones mid-day, eventually into Progreso audio, possibly on one of the first days active. No trace of the two listed low power Rebelde stations, for what it's worth. Checked this channel per Dave Yocis inquiry (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA. From 10-45: Interesting history of this station, which is no longer easily heard on MW with English programming. Its real purpose was to block Radio Martí, but wasn`t that always on 1180? (Glenn Hauser, DXLD) "CUBA. RADIO TAÍNO... en la frecuencia de los 1160 kilohertz." Don't think so. I'm pretty sure this one was indeed on 1180, as mentioned, specifically to jam Marti'. Last thing of note Fidel had on 1160 was a jammer, vs. Radio Americas, first half of 1968 (GREG HARDISON, CA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I happen to have a fairly detailed account of Taíno's history on my page at: https://sites.google.com/site/floridadxn/radio-taino---the-early-years So, this confirms I heard them only two days after activation. As far as I know, they are FM only now (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, USA 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, ibid.) ** CUBA. Now we know what became of RHC`s short-lived new frequency 15390: moved to 15230! Nov 11 at 1920 there is RHC // 11760 but an echo apart, also // 12040, 11730, 11690 but at this time not heard on 15360/15370/15380/15390. 15230 was a prime RHC frequency until abandoned many years ago; not clear why Arnie would move 15390 back to 15230 now. In fact, it`s on as early as 1411 Nov 12, QRMing CRI English via Sackville which has been on this B-season frequency for years! CRI way on top, but I manage to // the QRM audio underneath with 15360 an echo apart at 1450, when the 15230 RHC signal has gained a little on CRI; Commies vs Commies! 15230 may have seemed attractive as nothing else is scheduled there 15-22, but CRI is on it at 13-15 and Australia at 22-24, so RHC should only use it between 15 and 22. Perhaps RHC is still experimenting, as Nov 10 at 1138, Mark the Dark Coady in Ontario logged RHC on a slightly different unlisted frequency, 15235 // 6095. Then at 1545 Nov 12 checking the RHC schedule presented in Spanish at http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_frecuencia/frecuencias.htm I find it does show 15230 now in Spanish: to Buenos Aires at 11-23 and 00-05, breaking for Portuguese in between. Anything else new on it? English 11760 at 20-21 on this version is destined for Central America, rather than N/C/SAm, and no English for Europe (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 13780, ran across RHC with Arnie Coro at 1341-1346 Nov 13 talking about propagation. This is not a regular program, but just a contribution to the revistas, so may show up at various times. He says he recorded it at 1440 UT on Friday the 12th, when the Wolf sunspot number was 60. Solar activity has been increasing for the past sesquidekaday (quince días), so bands above 15 MHz are improving. Solar max is now expected in 2013, but peaking nowhere near as high as the past four cycles. Sunspots yesterday reached 66. 15230, at 1350 Nov 13, CRI Chinese music break in China Drive had a few IADs via Sackville, plus SAH de RHC and Spanish undercurrent now that Arnie has decided to collide with a fellow commie broadcaster, with whom they even have a relay deal. 11760 is best at 1540 when I am hearing music from Puerto Rico, as identified by announcer Tony Gómez, and I do believe he mentioned Cancionero Iberoamericano, i.e. the program which used to be on an hour earlier at 1430, and not changing UT due to DST or not, but now it has. 1556 titulares. 1600 I expect to hear mistakes in the frequency announcement for the following hour, and so I do: Tony says: ``15390, 11690, 11730, 11760, 12040, 6140`` in typical Soviet-style disorder, despite 15230 having replaced the short-lived 15390 several days ago. More music after 1600. He also keeps claiming RHC can be heard on ``audio real`` even tho it`s NOT the Real Audio format. Please engage brain before reading script. Please turn on a radio sometime and monitor your own station. Please establish rapid and accurate communications between studio and transmitters as to schedule. 12010, VG new frequency for RHC, Nov 14 at 0035 // 11760 with hard jazz, and also good on // 11770; plus 6060, 6140. 11770??? It`s scheduled only 1930-2400 to Europe, the last two sesquihours in Spanish, the first sesquihour in French, Portuguese, Arabic. 12010 is 23-05 for South America, and still heard altho weaker at 0205. RHC English getting started much earlier than in the last week, already underway at 0102 Nov 14 on 6050 atop HCJB, and weaker 6000 badly squeezed. Meanwhile Spanish on 6140, 6120, 6060. For the third week in a row, RHC`s Sunday morning programs are appearing one UT hour later that ever before. Nov 14 at 1340 music on Cuba Campesina; 1435 En Contacto, the DX program, ironically introduced by Manolo with the uncapitalized phrase ``amigos de la onda corta``, also the title of Spain`s DX program which used to air at the same time. This EC mainly had a good primer on tropical band DXing, from Radio Actividades in Uruguay. EC was on 13780 and many others. Have these timeshifts been made on the RHC Sunday morning program schedule at http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_programacion/programacion.htm ? of course not! Should we read all of these one hour later now? 12:33 UTC Domingo Cuba Campesina 13:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 13:10 UTC Domingo Amigos de Cuba 13:30 UTC Domingo Boletín 13:35 UTC Domingo En Contacto 13:50 UTC Domingo En Compañía del Doctor 14:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 14:10 UTC Domingo El Mundo de la Filatelia 14:30 UTC Domingo Boletín 14:35 UTC Domingo La Cultura en Cuba 14:53 UTC Domingo Boletín Resumen de la Mañana And what about the afternoon and evening program timings, and all other days of week? Have not checked those out. RHC was already in Sunday-morning mode, with 13750 instead of 13680 at 1412, maintaining the squeal. At 1501 I looked for scheduled Esperanto on 11760 only, but it was still Spanish // all the others, 15370, 15360, 15230, 17750, 11730, distorted 11690. Arnie claims 15120 is for South America, so why is it always stronger than the other 19m channels here? 15370 is new at this time, ex-12010 for Aló, Presidente. More chex during the 1500 semihour still find no Esperanto on 11760 at 1504, 1529. New online schedule claims Esperanto is now Sundays: San Francisco 6010 0700-0730 Norte Centro y Suramérica 11760 1500–1530 15370 2230-2300 While the sked Arnie sent Wolfgang Büschel adds another: América Central 11760 2100-2130 The 2100 and 2230 need to be confirmed this Sunday, but with 1500 missing, the prospects seem bleak. The Esperanto page at RHC website is totally outdated from a year or more ago. At 1511 all active frequencies were carrying RHC`s Filatelia show. Maybe Esperanto has also shifted unexpectedly one hour later, to 1600? No, at 1618, still Spanish, but now Aló, Presidente has started on its special frequencies, El Hugazo speaking on 17750, 15370, 13750, 13680, distorted 11690; while separate RHC mainstream on 11760, 11730. I have a feeling that Esperanto often gets lost in the shuffle between studio and transmitters. Looking for the alleged new times for Esperanto from RHC on Sundays: Nov 14 at 2105 nothing audible on 11760 tho I was inside a signal- repelling/absorbing building, a disappointing high-school performance of The Music Man with terrible acoustix in a gym; when I got outside at 2130 there was no signal on 11760 either tho RHC 11770 was fine. So I think the 2100-2130 Sunday Esperanto on Arnie`s schedule is imaginary. The next one is supposedly at 2230-2300 on 15370. That frequency was on the air Sunday Nov 14 at 2231, but in French, not Esperanto, urgently translating the spoutings of El Hugazo. The website schedule shows 15370 not starting until 2300, in Creole, and no French on any frequency at 2230. So perhaps French stands in for no available program this week in Esp`o. (As in previous report, none at 1500 either on 11760.) Meanwhile I also checked some of the Sunday afternoon Spanish programming against the website program schedule. On 15230 at 2236, Mundo de la Filatelia was in progress, giving postal addresses of two Cuban collectors who want to exchange stamps, one in Habana, another in Tunas, and there are usually several more each week. There is lite SAH on 15230, presumably R. Australia, but no modulation from it audible under Cuba [see also CHINA]. At 2257 I was on 6140, the new all-day frequency ex-6110, as Cuba Campesina was opening, and at 2301 also on // 9820 but this frequency is the perpetually lo-fi and distorted transmitter, best avoided, especially during music. Is it the transmitter or the program feed line to blame?? What time are these two on the schedule at http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_programacion/programacion.htm ? Unknown since the 21:00-23:00 UTC Domingo period is just a Revista Iberoamericana, containing features which at other dayparts get their own individual listings. When last we checked for Monitoring Reminders Calendar, Cuba Campesina was 2200/2225, preceded by En Contacto varying between 2142 and 2200. So CC has also shifted one UT hour later now, and likely so has EC around 2242 instead of 2142 UT. Next update of MRC will show them one hour later than: 2142/2200 RHC EN CONTACTO 5040 6140 9820 11730 11770 15230 [time varies] DX 2200/2225 RHC CUBA CAMPESINA 5040 6140 9820 11730 11770 15230 [time varies] music What about the `0135` non-final repeat [since there are more later in the night never published in schedules] of En Contacto UT Mondays? No, when I check at 0148 Nov 15 there is a sports report but EC with the Uruguay report is underway at 0239, so that too has moved one hour later. Here`s the Sunday evening schedule on website, meaning UT Mondays! which it seems we must also add one hour to, even if RHC itself never gets around to it: 24:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 24:10 UTC Domingo Cadena Deportiva Panamericana [really 1 hour later] 01:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 01:10 UTC Domingo Somos Jóvenes 01:25 UTC Domingo Andar la Habana 01:30 UTC Domingo Boletín 01:35 UTC Domingo En Contacto [confirmed one hour later] 01:50 UTC Domingo En Compañía del Doctor 02:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 02:10 UTC Domingo El Mundo de la Filatelia 02:30 UTC Domingo Boletín 02:35 UTC Domingo Amigos de Cuba [mailbag] 02:55 UTC Domingo Menciones y Promociones 03:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 03:10 UTC Domingo Indagaciones [investigations, of what?] 03:30 UTC Domingo Al Encuentro de América 04:00 UTC Domingo Noticiero 04:10 UTC Domingo El Idioma de Cervantes [the Castilian language] 04:20 UTC Domingo Así es mi Tierra 04:30 UTC Domingo Boletín 04:35 UTC Domingo La Cultura en Cuba 04:53 UTC Domingo Andar la Habana DentroCuban Jamming Command doing well on the harmonic scene, Nov 14 at 2240: pulses on 17865, which is 3 x 5955 vs ELCOR/República, so I also check 18090, and same pulsing audible there, 3 x 6030 vs Martí, intruding into the hamband. Also wall of noise jamming on 9725 Nov 14 at 2302 vs nothing audible, but HFCC shows 9725 as IBB Greenville Spanish at 0000-0100 daily, also 0100-0200 Tue-Sat, i.e. the combo VOA/Martí broadcast, but no longer starting at 2300 since DST went off in Wáshington. Duh! 9928, DCJC pulses against nothing Nov 15 at 1350, probably spur from 9955/9965 walls of noise. 15278, Nov 15 at 1446, jamming pulses, presumed spur of 15330 vs Martí, and also circa 15385 vs REE Sephardic. While 11760 was vacant Sunday Nov 14 at 2130, checked again on Monday Nov 15 at 2127 I am hearing RHC wrapping up French, and then at 2130 reopening another semihour of same, mentioning that the temp is 26. Meanwhile, 11770 and 11730 were in Spanish. The hours announced for French were 1930-2000 and 2100-2200, only. That contradicts the current online schedule presented in Spanish for French: América Central 11760 25 21-21:30 UTC Europa 11770 25 19:30-20 UTC Banda Tropical 5040 60 01:30–02 UTC While the RHC website French page itself has yet another version, and claims to be as of 8 November 2010: COUVERTURE Fréquences KHZ Banda Metros HORAIRES Amérique du Sud 15370 19 22:30 - 23:00 Amérique Centrale 1760 25 21:00 - 21:30 [typo for 11760] Caraïbe 5040 60 01:30 - 02:00 TU Europa [sic] 11770 25 19:30 - 20:00 TU http://www.radiohc.cu - - 19:30 - 20:00 21:00 - 22:00 (à partir de lundi 8 novembre 2010) The pdf version Arnie sent Wolfgang Büschel shows: TRANSMISIONES EN IDIOMA FRANCÉS (FRANÇAIS) Europa 11770 Khz /25 m 19:30 - 20:00 Norte, Centro y Sudamérica 11760 Khz /25 m 21:00 - 21:30 Sudamérica 15370 Khz /19 m 22:30 - 23:00 Banda Tropical 5040 Khz /60 m 01:30 - 02:00 So it seems that the 2130-2200 portion of French is supposed to be on their webcast only, but goes out sometimes on SW anyway (or maybe cut off sometime after 2130?) (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also CHINA ** CUBA. 6010, 6050 and 6060 from RHC English are unusually almost matched in strength and hummy modulation quality, Nov 17 at 0638 as Arnie is talking about SDRs and slopers, and furthermore are all synchronized; // 6150 tho continues to be much undermodulated. Meanwhile still lacking at this hour on 6000 contrary to schedule, just Harold camping on the frequency. 9955, DentroCuban Jamming Command still has it in for WRMI, Nov 17 at 0628 in English --- o, it`s CDHD Brigade 2506, the only exile program in English. But jamming pulses continue past 0630 when WRMI starts R. Praga in Spanish, surely no threat to The Revolution. 13680, I am monitoring RHC Nov 17 at 1359 when Tony Gómez gives a frequency announcement. Now he mentions start and stop times for some of the frequencies, a change: 15120, 15360, 15390; from 1300, 13680, 13780; from 1100, 12040, 11760; from 1300, 11730; from 1400 to 2000, 11690; and until 0500, 6140. But he`s still clueless that short-lived 15390 in the clear was replaced by 15230 under China a week ago. And reconfirmed today at 1408, way under 15230 Sackville, not on 15390 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CYPRUS. 10240-10265, OTH radar pulses, Nov 15 at 1352; since Firedrake was VG on 10500, might have assumed this too from China, but 25-kHz spread is typical of Cyprus (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 6025.075, 3.11 2315, R Amanecer DOM hördes äntligen när frekvensen var öppen! Must be because 9900 is Abu Zabaal site, 250 kW, 245 degrees, while 9915 is Abis site, 250 kW, 282 degrees. Deep fades. None of this info appears in WRTH 2010; will it in 2011? This morning transmission is probably sporadic and/or Sunday-only. Announcer on the canned ID had an American, not Equatorialguinean, accent. Deep fades but peaking S9+10. Then on to next preacher. Some other 19m Africans also in, e.g. NIGERIA. 15190, Nov 15 at 2212, poor signal with English conversation between YL and a mumbler, who sure sounds like Tony Alámo, but can`t be positive. This was the usual time for him on R. Or Cupertino? This website linx to a few recent stories on him, including the tough time he`s having in Tucson federal prison: http://www.tonyalamonews.com/ 15190, yesterday I thought I was still hearing convicted and incarcerated child sex molester Tony Alamo on Radio Africa. Today, November 16 it`s definite. Tune-in at 2153 to hear YL giving area code 479 phone and fax numbers. Close, but no cigar, as 479 is NW Arkansas including Fort Smith, not SW Arkansas, Texarkana. But she`s immediately followed by the mumbler saying ``Pastor Tony Alamo . . . God bless you``. Then canned ID by R. Africa announcer spelling out postal address in Accra, G-H-A-N-A (was my hearing Zimbabwe before mistaken, or alternative?), ``thank you for listening to Radio Africa``. 2157 it`s back to Tony Alamo introducing another of his numbered programs, in the two-hundreds, I think he said. Interesting to compare signal with 15195, YFR via Ascension, about to go off; Africa had less flutter (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) [and non]. And already as of 1 Jan 1994 no condensers with more than one litre of PCB were allowed to stay in operation. This concerned two 600 kW transmitters of the Langenberg station, which had been used to run 1593 kHz with up to 800 kW. The transmitters were of 1966 vintage and had started to show their age by needing frequent repairs, besides their poor efficiency. Thus WDR decided that they are not worth a replacement of the PCB-containing parts anymore and shut down 1593 at yearend 1993. (Kai Ludwig, Germany, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GERMANY. The below quoted taz report appeared in print only, at least I can not find it on their website. An English summary: THE INDIRECT SPEECH Internal communications at DW are in need of reform as well. On Nov 4 DW director Erik Bettermann told Evangelischer Pressedienst that a three-digit number of job positions will be cancelled until 2014. This news came like a bombshell and hit DW staff entirely unexpectedly. taz has seen an internal paper of the DW works committee that provides evidence of this circumstance, stating that "the committee does not consider it as a reasonable way of internal communications when staff members learn about the elimination of a three-digit number of job positions from the newspapers". A decision about the points outlined by the paper is expected towards the end of this year. Staff members describe the atmosphere at DW as disastrous, caused by both the messed up communications and the plans themselves. They say that officially DW will keep its 30 languages, but de facto the plans come to service closures. Also the internal committee paper says that "the decisive questions are being left unanswered". DW spokesperson Johannes Hoffmann says that "a threat of job position losses" was already internally known, that no detailed measures have been decided yet and only decisions about the broad strategy worded so far. Unlike his boss he was not willing to mention numbers for the reduction of job positions. Hope it is not being closed down too like Italy, Iceland, Puerto Rico, Hawaii previously (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi Glenn, The recent change over to a music format for AFN Guam was a concern to me in light of what happened to AFN Pearl Harbor after they changed to the same format. Shortly thereafter they stopped broadcasting! AFN Guam (5765-USB) was absent on Nov 13, 14 and 15, so things are not looking particularly good for them. For those three days I was able to hear AFN Diego Garcia (4319-USB) continuing to broadcast the usual AFN SW programming (alas with somewhat muffled audio) of mostly news/talk and feature bits. So what is there about changing over to a music format that dooms an AFN station? Or is this analogize to being their swan song? (Ron Howard Nov 16 dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 5765-USB --- whew, after missing a few days, AFN is back, Nov 17 at 1342 check, but it`s still country music instead of news/talk (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** GUATEMALA. 4052.45, 0146-0152, R. Nov 11 at 1310 I am getting numerous carriers on 60m corresponding to AIR stations, while an hour before nothing much was audible. Local sunrise in Enid was 1305, so we are in grayline mode. Aoki shows 6280 also bears on UT Fri and Sat only from 2200, a 300 kW Sound of Hope from Taiwan, and consequent ChiCom jamming, likely to mar AIR. 7550, AIR GOS, Nov 16 at 2225 during sporting segment, presumably about cricket as little else matters. Weaker here than // 6280 as reported yesterday; also on weaker // 9445 but out of synch with the others. HFCC has both 6280 and 9445 as 500 kW, 320 degrees from Bengaluru, but no listing for 7550, a frequency certainly in use previously and now. The handy but hit-and-miss archive of B-10 schedules from miscellaneous sources at http://www.bclnews.it/portal/ does not include AIR B-10, nor for A-10 either. Strangely, DX Asia does not have B-10 info yet either, but for A-10 http://dxasia.info/india-language showed: 7550 GOS-4 1745 1945 N-W.Africa External 7550 French 1945 2030 N-W.Africa External but not for the GOS-5 2045-2230 emission. However, Jose Jacob`s version, also for A-10 as of June, no B-10: http://www.qsl.net/vu2jos/es/time.htm ``2045-2230 English 6280(B) 7550(Kh) 9445(B) 9940 9950*(Kh) UK & W. Europe`` with 7550 in bold red as a ``late change``. Kh means Khampur site near Delhi. Alokesh Gupta`s list is even older, for B-09, as of 13 November 2009, http://alokeshgupta.googlepages.com/freq.htm maybe not meant to be accessed now? But bookmarked: already had 7550: ``7550 250 Delhi (Khampur) 1745-1945 English, 1945- 2045 Hindi, 2045-2230 English (Europe) (ex 7410)`` AIR`s own website http://www.allindiaradio.org/external.html is undated and apparently not meant to be current; it does show frequencies for most of the broadcasts but they are missing for this one, GOS No. V, at 0215-0400 IST! The B-10 Prime Time Shortwave by country list as of Nov 8: http://www.primetimeshortwave.com/country.txt India All India R. 2045-2230 Eu 6280, 7550, 9445, 9950 drm India All India R. 2045-2230 Oc 9910, 11620, 11715 EiBi by time as of November 9 has all three of the Eu frequencies as Bengaluru: http://www.eibispace.de/dx/bc-b10.txt ``2045 2230 IND All India Radio DIGITAL E Eu 9950k 2045 2230 IND All India Radio GOS E Eu 7550b 9445b 6280b Oc 9910a 11715k FE 11620b SEA 11620k`` Aoki http://www.geocities.jp/binewsjp/bib10.txt shows 6280, 7550 and 9445 all as B-10 info for 2045-2230, Bengaluru except 7550 Khampur. So 2.5 weeks into the new season, not all sources have the latest info, but the latter ones appear correct as far as the Eu frequencies we can hear. Obviously there is no reliable source out of AIR itself, which ideally would make all these sources match immediately. 9870, AIR Vividh Bharati Service, has been incoming well lately also in our evenings, but Nov 17 at 1421 instead of Indian pop music there is a W&W discussion in Hinglish: mainly Hindi but liberally sprinkled with English words and expressions, such as costume designer (repeatedly), so I think, professional actor, and mostly, ultimately, director, you know, to be prepared, on the job, etc. It is too bad that there is no way to say such things in pure Hindi, but a bonus for us nons. This lasted until 1330 when there was a bit of film music, 1331 into drama with sound effects. Incomparably better tho fluttery signal on 9870 VBS than on unusable AIR GOS 9690, or AIR National Channel 9425, all of which are supposedly from same site Bengaluru, azimuths respectively being 335, 108, 18 degrees (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** INDIA [non]. 12005, Nov 11 at 1329 S Asian music, 1330 announcement in unrecognizable language, more music, flutter. Reception there ought to be better also at 13-14 UT than 9526-, which still has intermittent audio dropouts (IADs) --- I counted nine of them during a one-minute period, spaced very irregularly; and there were almost continuous crackles in addition from the Banjarmasin feed. Finished with a songs from Jak, then from Banj and one could tell the difference, the latter with IADs plus crackles. Finally, Jak guy said goodbye from the fourth floor of the RRI building. Continued on air past 1400 after canned YL ID in English, into Indonesian (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 9526-, VOI not off the air again today, Nov 17 at 1352 with music, IADs as ever, English ID with ``Sound of Dignity``. Re DXLD 10-45 Sputnik 1 --- Glenn, Thanks for the article Sputnik 1. One factual error regarding the configuration. The body of the satellite was spherical. The satellite had no "longitudinal axis". I'm guessing but I think the four whips formed two center-fed dipoles which were fed 90 degrees out of phase to provide a circularly polarized wavefront to avoid fading as the satellite orientation and Faraday Rotation would have caused deep fades on a linearly polarized signal. There is a Russian newsreel showing the control center, (right out of the Flash Gordon serials), the satellite and the antenna configuration at: I was a junior at Purdue University that weekend. Oct. 4, 1957 was a Friday. I also recorded the signal on an overhead pass on Sunday afternoon at the amateur radio club station of my residence hall, W9CLY. The receiver was an old (even then) NC-240 by National Radio. Our 5 kW AM radio station, WBAA (920 kHz), had no news on Sunday but on Monday morning I contacted Johnny DeCamp, their news director, who had me bring the tape to the studio. He aired it on the noon local news. Not only was that event the start of the space race, it was the start of my 35 year career in the aerospace industry. Also an opportunity to remind us that KI can still be heard in English on SW, thanks to WRN and WRMI, M-F 0600-0615 on 9955, but always subject to Cuban jamming. This now appears as a specific entry on the WRMI program grid, not just as generic WRN, probably because WRMI has inserted a strip of other programming at 0615 during the WRN fill time; see CUBA. The workers 5 November staged an indefinite go-slow action protesting bad working conditions by the station manager, Mr James Morlu. The workers accused Mr Morlu of gross abuse of their labour and vowed they could no longer work under his administration. The protesting staff further accused Mr Morlu of being unable to raise adequate funds to pay them and declared a unanimous vote of no confidence in him. The workers also reported the breakdown of systems at the station coupled with the lack of motivation by Mr Morlu. Key among their complaints was the failure by Mr Morlu to define their status at the entity, a situation they claimed has deprived them assessment [as published] of loans from banks. They also claimed since the opening of Star Radio in May 2005, salaries have been cut twice thus placing them in difficult financial situations. According to the aggrieved workers, Mr Morlu also succeeded in cutting down basic benefits like scratch cards and other supplies that made the staff effective. In a release drawing public attention to conditions at Star Radio, the workers explained on many occasions they had to improvise to keep the station on air. The workers said the decision to go slow followed several failed attempts to resolve the issues with Mr Morlu and Chairperson of the Board Hawa Goll-Kotchi The go slow involved all staff of the news and programme departments , language announcers, correspondents, volunteers and support staff of the station. Despite the workers' complaints, Mr Morlu refused to step down and continued to enticed members of the senior management team to join him in solidarity. Days later, the senior management team took a definitive stance on the crisis by asking Mr Morlu to honourably resign. A day after writing to Mr Morlu to resign the Labour Ministry invited the management team to hear its position on the matter. The senior staff joined by the representatives of the junior staff met at the Labour Ministry and again told Morlu to resign and leave something he argued about. The government through the Labour Ministry then asked both staff and senior management to get the station back on the air while the government works with the Board to respond to the workers' demand within seven days. The management team comprises the heads of news, programmes, technical and electrical. The Board was represented by its chairperson, Madam Goll-Kotchi, and John Collins, a member. The seven-day ultimatum started since Friday 12 November and a response consistent with the workers' claim is expected. As it appears, the deal is shaky because Mr Morlu looks almost unprepared to leave and his intransigence could spell more problems for Star Radio's future. Even after his departure, the station will need more donor support to give Star Radio the moral backing it needs to perform credibly as in the past. Dear DrAgan, The news files seem more up to date than the audio files. The October files were uploaded only recently. If you have been hearing the station on a particular date, you will probably enjoy listening to the actual program again in order to gauge your own reporting skills. VOM refuses to issue QSL cards for n/d reports, and by listening to their mailbag program I have noticed that they do in fact turn down QSL requests if sufficient program detail is missing. However, I do not know if the slow pace in updating program files has to do with this (Henrik Klemetz, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, ibid.) ** MOROCCO. 15341.1, RTM, Thursday Nov 11 at 1440 Arabic music, very weak het from 15340 today, presumably HCJB Australia. Harold Frodge in Michigan reported hearing a surprising set of foreign languages on 15341.15 at 1445-1501* 2 November, including German, Hebrew!, Arabic and French, but none of that today until 1457, just more music and Arabic as far as I can tell, tho modulation is deficient. Presumably what he heard happened to be on the relayed domestic service, and Nov 2 was a Tuesday, in case that matter. 15341.1, RTM, Nov 12 at 1447 again looking for foreign language capsules as Harold Frodge reported on Nov 2, but none heard, just Arabic music and talk, het from 15340 presumed HCJB (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 15341.18, Radio Morocco, Nador. 1230-1240 November 13, 2010. Very good with Arabic male. Still way off frequency (Terry L Krueger, Clearwater, Florida, USA, 27.55.83 N, 82.46.08 W, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Since Harold Frodge heard languages other than Arabic around 1445-1500 from RTM 15341.1 on Nov 2, I have been trying to duplicate that feat. Since his date was a Tuesday, I am especially hopeful on Nov 16, monitoring from 1442. Has het from presumed HCJB Australia 15340, tho not making it on their other frequency 15400. But only hear a speech in Arabic, briefly interrupted by another Arabic voice at 1459. Then speech continues until 15341.1 abruptly cuts off at 1505:35*. I stand by for it to come up on 15345 instead. It takes less than a semiminute, carrier on from *1506:04, much more quickly than a previous date --- but, no modulation applied until 1512:05! Still the speech in Arabic. Is there any technical reason why after a rapid 3.9-kHz frequency change, modulation cannot be resumed immediately? Or just more slopperation from Nador. If I were the speechifier, would be upset about such an interruption, but I bet he is blissfully unaware of it, not an SWL (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I rather bet that nobody listens to these poorish Nador shortwave outlets anyway. Probably they believe that more fine-tuning is necessary? But then the question is what is the point of this 15341 part-day nonsense anyway? Was there at some point something on 15350 they wanted to escape and now they continue this once introduced practice without thinking about it for only a single second? Or did they believe it would be a good idea to run the Nador transmitter within six kilohertz of the Briech outlet on 15335 while it still existed? Anyway the result of this practice is now a bad 1 kHz het, presumably from HCJB Australia although I did not manage to get out the modulation of the 15340 carrier when checking around 1300. And programming on 15341 was in Arabic. At the same time the other Nador shortwave transmitter on 9575, carrying the commercial Medi 1, came in with considerably stronger signal but distorted modulation. I think it sounded noticeably cleaner not too long ago (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Nov 17, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** MYANMAR. 9730.8, 0926-0936, BURMA, R. We no longer broadcast on shortwave in Arabic. The frequency for the English transmission via Meyerton at 1900-2000 is 11615 kHz, not 12080, and the target is west/central Africa. That is the only RNW transmission via Meyerton in B10. 73, (Andy Sennitt, Nov 15, DX LISTENING DIGEST) I don`t know where Alokesh got that schedule, maybe an early tentative version, but agree that SENTECH now shows the one English broadcast on 11615 (gh, DXLD) ** NETHERLANDS [non]. 9865, VG reception of classical piano concerto, Nov 17 at 0626, but I am very apprehensive, as this must be RN and it must be about to go off. How is it in Europe, Nigeria? 7345, RDPI music from PORTUGAL at 0655-0658* Nov 17; meanwhile, no sign of Nigeria 7350 now or earlier. I haven`t noticed it, but BBCWS French via Skelton to W Africa is now scheduled on 7350 at 0600-0630, take that, Abuja! Used to be the prime time to hear R. Nigeria, but should still have no cochannel before or after, if it is still on the 7350 air at all. ACI from 7345, 7355 Biblis until 0600 is another matter. Nigeria failed to register 7350 with HFCC so the big shots can pretend it`s not there. Axually there are no Nigerian registrations at all in HFCC, not even the external service on 7255, 15120, and any clueless station attempting to use them while VON is on will regret it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** NIGERIA [and non]. 15120, Nov 11 at 0715 French mentioning President Obama, fair signal, VON as scheduled to Europe at this hour. Now`s the time for unusual nightmiddle openings from the tropix. 15120, Nov 14 at 0636, VON, very distorted and overmodulated, presumed English as scheduled this hour in seeming interview. Carrier unstable too. This is really incredible: VON has spent a lot on installing brand-new transmitter and antennas, and this is what we get? Have they ruined the new equipment already, or are we still hearing the old stuff? Nightmiddle opening, also inbringing EqG 15190, and DW Rwanda 15275, plus even better 1Africa CVC Zambia 13590, but nothing at all audible above 15275, as if we were right at the MUF (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** OKLAHOMA. So where on the radio may we hear news from KJRH- 8 and KTUL-10? KRMG has added an FM relay, but not KFAQ, backward. May I suggest that traffic reporting, at least, is more appropriate from radio stations to be quoted by TV stations, as there are few TVs in cars, and no one can hear `channel 6` on FM any more. But then, TV stations are more likely to have choppers, altho often outsourced and no longer essential for locating hazards and jams (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** OKLAHOMA. 1560, Nov 16 at 2057:30 UT I do catch a quick ``1560 KEBC`` ID from Radio Disney, confirming the latest call change. Many new calls for this net`s stations alluded to Disney characters, e.g. 620 KMIK Plano TX; (Defunct 1380 KMUS was lucky coincidence, from Muskogee to Mouse). But can`t think of anything to fit KEBC beyond a rather lame ``Kids Enjoy BroadCasting``. 1560 was KOCY for quite a while, then in early October, 1340 KEBC was renamed KGHM as in game, but Clear Channel wanted to park the KEBC calls somewhere, so moved them to 1560. What about KOCY now, which would seem a more natural call for a station in Oklahoma City? FCC Queries show it unassigned to any AM, FM or TV station anywhere as of Nov 16, so CC apparently let the most historic set loose (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST) PS: Happy anniversary, State of Oklahoma ** OMAN. 15140, Radio Sultantate of Oman/Radio Oman; 1430-1443+, 13- Nov; English news to 1439+ RSoO ID and start of announcement by M. Radio Free Sarawak started broadcasting today, on the following schedule: 1st transmission: 2230-2330 UTC on 7590 kHz 2nd transmission: 1000-1100 UTC on 15680 kHz Per Free Malaysia Today website http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/fmt-english via Radio Netherlands Media Network http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork via Dave Kernick, Nov 15, dxldyg via DXLD) Viz.: Radio Free Sarawak goes on the air Radio Free Sarawak, aimed as an alternative voice for Sarawakians, went on air this morning. In an e-mail to Free Malaysia Today, the Bruno Manser Foundation, said that the new alternative radio station will have two daily broadcasts on shortwave, presumably in Iban and Bahasa Malaysia. “It aims at Sarawak’s rural communities who lack access to independent media,” stated the e-mail. It is an open secret that the media in Sarawak are strictly controlled by the state government under Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and logging companies who own and control all major media outlets in the state. The transmission details of Radio Free Sarawak are as follows: * 1st transmission: 0630-0730 local time (2230-2330 UT) on 7590 kHz * 2nd transmission: 1800-1900 local time (1000-1100 UT) on 15680 kHz The e-mail had also attached a message from the producers of Radio Free Sarawak. Below is the message: “Please send the details to all your Sarawak friends so that they know the existence of the radio-which will become an alternative news source to the Sarawakians, especially to those who stay in the interior. The folks in the interior have been fed with a monotonous one-sided views from the ruling parties - if at all they can receive the TV and radio transmissions. So they need another avenue - and Radio Free Sarawak intends to fill in this gap.” Source: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com Andy Sennitt comments: If anyone knows the transmitter site(s) being used, please advise us. There is nothing in the current HFCC database that appears to match the above schedule. On this page http://www.barubian.net/2010/11/radio-free-sarawak.html the power of 7590 kHz is listed as “100 or 200 kW”, and this page http://hornbillunleashed.wordpress.com/2010/11/15/11885/ says “the broadcast is being transmitted out of London”, but this probably refers to the production facility rather than the transmitting site (November 15th, 2010 - 11:15 UTC, by Andy Sennitt, Media Network blog via WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DXLD) Second link also says ``15869`` Radio Free Sarawak received from *2232 UT on Nov. 15 by many Japanese DXers on 7590 kHz. http://ani.atz.jp/DX/bbs1/img/10327.mp3 by Hiro in Akita It was confirmed in Nov. 14 at *2230 by hiroshi. http://hiroshi.mediacat-blog.jp/e59932.html in Japanese. Next up was "Network Journal" with another guy discussing "the Haj flu" as he dubbed it, and tips on staying healthy when in contact with large groups of people (including gargling with Listerine or Scope -- isn't that all bad since it contains alcohol?). Then discussing famous people who, upon earning their first millions, gave back to their community. Abruptly off at 1229, mid-sentence. But 9265 WINB has someone else, a YL preacher. And 9460? TOM is supposed to have started Nov 12 at 1400-1600 daily, 100 kW, 300 degrees from Wertachtal, but despite being aimed USward, really for Europe, inaudible here, and paranoid Pastor Pete Peters is no help blasting away from WTWW 9479. 13810 is also via MBR, but Nauen, 100 kW, 129 degrees at 1400-1600 daily, renewed as of 12 November. 15495, surprised to hear Brother Scare here, Nov 17 at 1402, good signal. I scan by here daily and first time heard, so must be brand- new. Not synchronized with US sites on 9980, 9265, 9385, tho it is close to WWCR 9980, about two words ahead of it. 15495 is, however, synchronized with 13810 which is Nauen, GERMANY so 15495 must be another MBR relay, Nauen or possibly Wertachtal. The 15495 signal is incomparably better than 13810. 15495 gone at 1358 check, probably off one minute earlier in typical M&B style. 18530, BS also clearly here, Nov 17 at 1412, and really nudging the S- meter today up to peaks of S9+10, this wobbly second harmonic of WINB 9265. Yet this frequency never appears on The Overcomer Ministry schedule; surely it`s justified for a bit more self-aggrandizement of the Last Day Prophet of God (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) See also USA: WWRB ** SPAIN [and non]. 5970 seems to be the frequency REE intends to use for 00-01 English to NAm, as reconfirmed Nov 11 around 0030, altho they can be a bit late getting switched over from 6055 at 0000. After 0100, 6055 back on in Spanish, not English, squeezed by Cuba now on both sides. 5965 via CR, trying to nail down when Amigos de la Onda Corta is now *really* on the air. This version on REE`s own website http://www.rtve.es/radio/radio-exterior/programacion/ is undated but ``mensual`` implying it is updated every month. (Link to it from programasdx calls it ``semanal``, weekly). It does show current time difference of one hour between HOE and UT, instead of two in the summer, but it has obvious incorrect info, like no Basque at 1330 UT, no co-official languages at 2345-2355, both M-F. It claims that Amigos de la OC is Saturdays at 0700 UT, Con Respuesta at 0730 UT. Yet the link to the Amigos page http://www.rtve.es/radio/20100120/amigos-onda-corta/313335.shtml shows it as Sat 0605, Sun 1330 as of 20 January 2010, so that was last winter`s schedule. We`ve already confirmed the Sunday 1330 time as correct for B-10. Unfortunately I tune in too late Saturday Nov 13 at 0647 to 5965 via CR, when the program is called ``Edición Exclusiva`` interview about some Venezuelan prize. One would expect the DX and mailbag program Con Respuesta to remain a pair, one after the other. But there is no program named Edición Exclusiva on the schedules. At 0710, I find 5965 playing classical music instead of Amigos de la OC, so maybe that show really was on an hour earlier, when it could reach a slightly larger awake audience in the Americas, slightly smaller in Europe. 15170 and weaker squeezed 15125 both via CR (but not 11815 which is M- F only): as soon as I mention that Amigos de la Onda Corta has been confirmed Sundays at 1330 from REE, as it was heard Oct 31 and Nov 7, bam! It`s gone, Nov 14, replaced by discussion of Fórmula Uno caracing, mentioning Madrid, Barcelona, Abu Dhabi. Perhaps this was a special silly sports preëmption, so we know what REE`s priorities are, requiring us to check again 168 hours later. Still on that subject 1 hour later, also on 17595 direct and the 13m channels. 15385, Emisión Sefarad en judeo-español de REE, Monday Nov 15 at 1435 M speaking Castilian about the WW II years, interviewed by W speaking JE. The two are so close that they have no trouble understanding each other, tho it would be nice with only one semihour per week if this broadcast could be totally in JE. 1444 some nice Sephardic music, marred by lite clix, probably spurs from DentroCuban Jamming Command against Martí on 15330. 1448 discussing film festivals, fill with Triumphal March from Aïda (is there a Jewish connexion?); 1453 sign- off with schedule still including 11780 for South America UT Tuesdays 0115. Someone should write sefarad @ rtve.es and tell them that they are colliding with Brasília, and should go back to 11795, but why should it be up to a bylistener in OK? Does anyone care in their intended audience? She should also be told that giving the Spain/UT days only for the schedule could be confusing to casual listeners in the Américas: `o sea lunes por la tarde`. Tho we confirmed REE`s new semi-hour in Basque earlier in November, M- F at 1330-1400, it`s gone again Nov 17 at 1349 when 9765 is in Castilian // no satellite delay direct on 17595, and no doubt all the other frequencies at this hour. Discussing tuberculosis, then 1350 program ``En thinco minutos``. So maybe they have moved Euskera to the originally published time of 1300? Still SS in the 1400 and 1430 semihours. Or maybe it was just missing or came up short today, requiring further monitoring; or strike disruptions again? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SPAIN [and non]. Weekend Music programs part 2 – This past Saturday, Nov 13, I went looking on 6055 for a favorite, Radio [Exterior de] España, on Saturday at 00 UT, but sadly, I believe it is history; but, while on 6055 I heard some great jazz sounds coming down from 6060, which is a frequency you have been telling us Cuba is using (It won`t until 01 UT). You might want to give it a listen, and tell your audience about this great music, if it continues to be heard at this time at this frequency. All the best, (Kent D Murphy, N Martinsville WV, Nov 15, postcard retyped by gh for DX LISTENING DIGEST) Kent eschews being in immediate contact by the web, so was unaware of 5970 new frequency for Spain in English at 00-01. But he also must not have heard me mention it already on WORLD OF RADIO 1538. And is he talking about UT Saturday or UT Sunday? And is Spain still claiming to be on 6055 instead of 5970? Anything on 6060 Spanish from Cuba at 0000 would also be on several other, possibly better frequencies (Glenn Hauser, Nov 19, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** SUDAN [non]. 17700 South Sudan Interactive Radio service via Ascension. 1636-1659* Nov.10. TRT on 15480 // 15350 about equal level, Nov 13 at 1358 with Turkish commercials after music. Usually 15350 is much stronger, and these are supposed to go off around 1355. I keep listening to 15480, then hear motorace SFX, finally pulling the plug abruptly at 1401:50, by when 15350 is also off. I was previously speculating that something weak on 15480 at 1412 Nov 12 could be DVB on early, but now it seems more likely Turkey on late, as we often find their slopperation runs overtime, sometimes to the detriment of the following language service on another frequency. See also UNIDENTIFIED 15480 Looking for LRA36, we again notice TRT 15480 running overtime: Nov 15 at 1400 an accurate timesignal, Turkish continuing here and on // 15350. The BBC often airs their programs several times, but I don`t know if World of Music can be heard at any other time. If Spain continues to broadcast the fantastic world music you told us about in WOR 1518 (June 24, 2010) and #1522 (July 21), SW listening on the weekends sounds very good in B-10. Reception on 7415 was so poor I had to check the webcast to confirm which show it was. So WBCQ listeners would have to wait until the next scheduled airing on Tuesday?! Rather, tnx to Larry Will of Area 51, WOR will get a temporary replay Sunday nights, UT Mondays 0300-0330 on 5110, but only during November while Pirates` Week is on vacation. We hope some other time(s) on WBCQ can be found permanently (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DX LISTENING DIGEST) We thought WOR was missing again from our only scheduled time on WWRB, UT Friday 0430 on 3185, since we checked the webcast first and were hearing Bible readings, but later on 3185 WOR was playing correctly. Seems the webcast was perhaps confused by the timeshift. WOR is supposed to be on the `stream` link, not the `stream2` link, but this time Bible was on both. Also confirmed on WRMI Friday at 1530. Look for next airing Friday at new standard time of 2130 UT which means WWCR is on 7465 instead of 15825. 15 MHz has long range coverage, 7465 best at closer range, and should make for very good reception in most of North America, but how about Europe, Africa? Then on WWCR: Sat 1700 on 12160; UT Sun 0330 on 4840, 0730 on 3215, times now shifted one UT hour later. Checking WWCR website for latest frequency changes, I see that the replacement for short-lived 3255 is not only 7465 at 23-01, but also 7490 at 01-02 --- that`s because VOA Spe-cial Eng-lish is already on 7465 at 0130-0200 Tue-Sat. Furthermore, following complaints of QRMoscow on 7290, IRRS has changed the frequency at 19-20 to 6090, effective Nov 13, including WORLD OF RADIO at 1900 Saturdays. Employees at New Jersey Network received 45-day layoff notices Tuesday as the public television and radio network prepares to move off the government payroll. Whether the station moves off the air on Jan. 1, when it stops receiving state funding and the layoffs take effect, remains to be seen. The notices said the layoffs were done "for reasons of economy," but provided few other details about the fate of New Jersey's only public network. NJN was incorporated in 1968 and went on the air in 1971. Its purpose was to provide New Jersey-specific programming for viewers living between the major New York City and Philadelphia markets. New Jersey has two commercial TV stations, WMGM in Atlantic City and WWOR in Secaucus. "Today is really a very difficult day for our loyal staff because the layoff notices have been circulated without any clear description from the executive and legislative branches as to the means of transferring NJN to a new entity," said Kent Manahan, chairman of the New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority Board, which oversees NJN. The notices went out to 130 employees; 17 additional employees who are paid through a private foundation are also expected to receive layoff notices, said Janice Selinger, the acting executive director of NJN public television. If the governor's office and Legislature don't act before Jan. 1, the station would go dark. However, both branches have "expressed the sentiment that they want us to thrive and continue," Selinger said, adding that the station just started a new series and continues to fundraise, although that has become more difficult, she said. Gov. Chris Christie's budget this year eliminated state funding for the station after Dec. 31, forcing NJN to convert from a government entity to a private, nonprofit broadcast outlet. Christie has said the state does not need and cannot afford its own TV station, and he proposed transferring operations and licenses to an independent entity. A legislative task force last month agreed with him, but little has been done to prepare the station for transfer. Christie has proposed legislation to direct his treasurer to take inventory of the network's assets to figure out the best way to sell or transfer them. He also wants to begin negotiations with other public broadcasting outlets interested in purchasing the network and its broadcasting licenses. The station has four broadcasting [sic; = TV!] and eight radio licenses. The licenses can be sold only to other public television stations or religious broadcasters but estimates are uncertain about how much money the state could make by selling them. While other states have government-owned stations, NJN is unique in that it produces a nightly newscast and is one of the few stations to carry gubernatorial budget addresses live. It is also a member of the PBS network and NPR network for radio, broadcasting public programming as well as producing original broadcasts. If the station were to come off the air in January, it would have a year before the Federal Communications Commission could take back the broadcast licenses, according to Ellen Goodman, an information policy law professor at Rutgers Law School-Camden. Christie spokesman Kevin Roberts said the layoff notices were necessary as NJN becomes independent from the state and said the administration was working with the Legislature to come up with a transition process (via Kevin Redding, ABDX via DXLD) ** URUGUAY. 5790 kHz Tacuarembó Uruguay no ar --- Pela 1ª vez tive o privilégio de escutar a rádio Sudamérica de Tacuarembó do Uruguay (cerca de 100 Km ao sul de Santana do Livramento RS) em Xangri lá litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul a partir do Pôr do sol até à noite, quando o sinal melhorou mais 1 pouco, mas mesmo assim era fraco, entretanto perfeitamente audível. The ``shortwave frequency change update`` at http://www.1africa.tv/ still shows 13590 as the ``Nigeria antenna``, yet displays times in CAT of UT+2, wrong for Nigeria UT+1. BTW, 1Africa now emits the slogan ``Extreme Faith`` --- isn`t there enough extremism in the world already? 13590 has collisions with CRI, VOR, DW, during parts of the span, worst of all BBC DRM via Sri Lanka at 14-17, while 13600 has collisions with Iran, Bulgaria (DRM if on), China, VOA; yet there is nothing in HFCC at any time on 13595, hint hint. Except DRM slop. At 1409 Nov 16, nothing on 13600, weak unID on 13590. At 1737 Nov 16, gospel rock on 13590, so CVC is definitely back there, nothing on 13600 (except CODAR up to 13605). However, brief periods of unsettled to active levels occurred at high latitudes during 03 – 05 November. ACE solar wind data indicated the unsettled to active levels were likely associated with IMF changes due to a solar sector boundary crossing. SPACE WEATHER OUTLOOK 10 NOVEMBER – 06 DECEMBER 2010 Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with a slight chance for moderate levels until Region 1121 departs the visible disk on 17 November. Activity is expected to be at very low to low levels for the remainder of the period. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels during 08 - 19 November. Normal to high flux levels are expected during 20 – 26 November. Flux levels are expected to return to normal levels for the remainder of the forecast period. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels during 08 – 09 November due to weak coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) effects. Quiet conditions are expected during 10 – 17 November. Field activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels on 18 November as a recurrent CH HSS begins to disturb the field. A further increase to unsettled to minor storm levels is expected during 19 – 20 November as CH HSS effects intensify. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet to unsettled levels on 23 November as CH HSS effects subside. Quiet levels are expected during 24 November – 04 December. Activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels during 05-06 December due to weak coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) effects. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2010 Nov 15 1925 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2010 Nov 09 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2010 Nov 10 85 5 2 2010 Nov 11 87 5 2 2010 Nov 12 87 5 2 2010 Nov 13 90 5 2 2010 Nov 14 90 5 2 2010 Nov 15 90 5 2 2010 Nov 16 90 5 2 2010 Nov 17 88 5 2 2010 Nov 18 85 8 3 2010 Nov 19 85 20 4 2010 Nov 20 85 15 3 2010 Nov 21 85 10 3 2010 Nov 22 85 8 3 2010 Nov 23 85 7 2 2010 Nov 24 85 5 2 2010 Nov 25 85 5 2 2010 Nov 26 80 5 2 2010 Nov 27 80 5 2 2010 Nov 28 80 5 2 2010 Nov 29 80 5 2 2010 Nov 30 82 5 2 2010 Dec 01 82 5 2 2010 Dec 02 85 5 2 2010 Dec 03 88 5 2 2010 Dec 04 88 5 2 2010 Dec 05 85 5 2 2010 Dec 06 85 5 2 (SWPC via DXLD) Geomagnetic field activity was mostly quiet during 08 - 10 November. Activity increased to unsettled late on 10 November as a CME passage began to disturb the field. Activity increased to quiet to active levels during 11 - 12 November with minor to major storm periods at high latitudes as the CME passage continued. Field activity decreased to quiet levels after 12/1500Z as CME effects subsided. Quiet to unsettled levels occurred on 13-14 November. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 17 NOV - 13 DEC 2010 Solar activity is expected to be very low to low during 17 - 22 November as many of the active regions rotate off the visible disk. Activity is expected to be very low during 23 November - 04 December. Very low to low levels are once again expected 05-13 December as older regions rotate back onto the visible disk. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels during 17 - 19 November. Flux levels are expected to return to normal levels for the remainder of the forecast period. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on 17-19 November due to the arrival of CMEs observed during 12 - 13 November in association with elevated solar wind speeds due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). Quiet conditions are expected from 20 November -11 December. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 12-13 December as another CH HSS moves into geoeffective position. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2010 Nov 16 2125 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2010 Nov 16 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2010 Nov 17 90 7 3 2010 Nov 18 90 5 2 2010 Nov 19 90 7 3 2010 Nov 20 88 5 2 2010 Nov 21 86 5 2 2010 Nov 22 84 5 2 2010 Nov 23 84 5 2 2010 Nov 24 82 5 2 2010 Nov 25 82 5 2 2010 Nov 26 82 5 2 2010 Nov 27 82 5 2 2010 Nov 28 82 5 2 2010 Nov 29 82 5 2 2010 Nov 30 82 5 2 2010 Dec 01 82 5 2 2010 Dec 02 82 5 2 2010 Dec 03 82 5 2 2010 Dec 04 84 5 2 2010 Dec 05 84 5 2 2010 Dec 06 84 5 2 2010 Dec 07 85 5 2 2010 Dec 08 85 5 2 2010 Dec 09 85 5 2 2010 Dec 10 85 5 2 2010 Dec 11 85 5 2 2010 Dec 12 85 7 3 2010 Dec 13 85 7 3 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1539, DXLD) ###
