Re 10-28: ``Glenn, I did hear Lady Ga Ga (announced as such) from KNLS, so they play even this type of music there, so your ears were likely not deceiving you! 73s, (Walt Salmaniw, BC, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Yes, I now see you reported her July 8; is she bona fide Christian? Are her lyrix pure? (gh)`` Due to poor propagation and most of all bad conditions, have a long time without any KNLS signals around here. Honestly, I don't bother myself trying to track them. But what KNLS is doing? Playing games with their audience? Trying to be diplomatic with God and Luci[fer] at the same time? Lady Ca Ca (Shit for Spanish) has nothing to do in their transmissions. It's crap and bad music all the way. Something like a second half for mediocre Madonna. Well, excuse me. I'd rather stop here. 73 (Raúl Saavedra, Costa Rica, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) 7355, KNLS, July 16 at 1201, Lucy Grant and Rob Scobey opening English hour with summary of magazine items to follow, culminating with Creation Moment, the anti-science feature over all these gospel-huxter stations. And ``music from the 80s, 90s and today``. Initially good reception likely to degrade as the hour wears on, but not for me, their stealth evangelism {and pop music generally from the wrong era}. Also audible after 1300 in Chinese on 9920 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ANTARCTICA. Another weekday, time to seek LRA36 on 15476, but no carrier detected July 19 at 1309 when there was something on 15480, nor at 1419. Off the air? Daytime propagation on 19m has been pitiful lately. 15476, still no trace of a carrier from LRA36, July 20 at 1309 and a couple of later chex (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 15476, LRA36, at 1417 checked on July 20 and had the same results as Glenn did earlier: no carrier! (Ron Howard, Asilomar State Beach, CA, Etón E1, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) [and non]. Still no trace of even a carrier on 15476 from LRA36, July 21 at 1237 and 1336. At the earlier hour, something detectable on 15480, and Turkey was poorly audible on 15450 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** ARGENTINA. 11710.8, RAE another station with severe modulation problems: July 15 at 0330, S9+20 with flutter, but just barely modulated, presumably scheduled French. The Japanese service of HCJB Australia is currently issuing different QSL-cards every month. These cards are not issued by the station HCJB in Melbourne, but by the Yodobashi Church in Tokyo. The address for reception reports would be mentioned at the end of this e-mail. Now, July edition of its QSL-card is featuring a DX-pedition held from 25th to 27th of last June. The participants of this DX-pedition are six Japanese men and held on a small island called "Katsurashima". You can see on this QSL card the group photograph of these participants taken near the pier of the ships. Front row left: Gakuji Masuo, right: Masao Hosoya / Back row from left: Shin-chi Shiraishi, Kazuhiko Iwasa, Nobuya Kato, and Koichiro Ito. This island, Katsurashima is located in the bay of Matsushima, near Sendai, one of the major cities in the Northeast of Japan and apart from Tokyo approximately 350 kilometers. As this island is under noise-free environment, so we hold DX-pedition once or twice every year. This QSL-card would be issued for the reception reports in July, but if you miss to receive the broadcast within July, I suggest that you ask the Yodobashi Church to issue the July edition even after the reports in August. Program schedule: Japanese service of HCJB Australia: 2230-2300 UT on 15525 kHz, Friday / Saturday only. The address for reception reports: HCJB c/o Yodobashi Church, 1-17-8 Hyakunin-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 169-0073, JAPAN Return postage in the form of International Reply Coupon is necessary. Nacional da Amazônia was on 6195 kHz (yes, NINE-five)? Presumed XEPPM was in the clear in Metro Vancouver (Theo Donnelly, BC, WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DX LISTENING DIGEST) No; will have to check that (gh, DXLD) Well, that was a one-day wonder: back on 6185 when I checked at 0155Z 19 July (Theo Donnelly, ibid.) Meanwhile: Currently (2215 UT 17 July) hearing Unidentified Brazilian on 6195 kHz with live football commentary - typical echoey commentator in Portuguese with lengthy 'Goaaaaaaaaaals'. One of teams involved is Vasco da Gama (from Rio de Janeiro). Fairly good signal here in Caversham. Nothing obvious listed. [later at 2315 UT:] Commentary is same as that online from Rádio Nacional 980 AM Brasília (online has time delay), though I cannot hear any Radio Nacional shortwave parallels here (6180 or 11780). Maybe a move from 6180 to 6195? (Alan Pennington, Caversham, UK, AOR 7030+ longwire, BDXC-UK yg via WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DXLD) RNA was most recently on 6185, but has jumped to other frequencies in the area previously (gh, DXLD) Thanks to Alan's tip, I also heard the Brazilian football commentary in Portuguese on 6195 kHz at 2225 UT tune-in, including what I thought was a mention of "Rádio Nacional". A good website for checking fixtures, results and stats, as well as live scores, is http://www.wsn.com/football Apparently, Vasco da Gama (RJ) beat Atlético (Paranaense) 3-1 last night. There are four Brazilian football matches this evening UT (18 July) so worth checking around the same time to see if commentary on one of these will be on 6195 kHz (Tony Rogers, Birmingham, UK, AOR 7030+ / LW, BDXC-UK yg via WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DXLD) Rádio Nacional this evening (18 July 2200 UT) audible back on 6185 and also audible on 11780 kHz with commentary parallel R Nacional 980 AM online at: http://radiotime.com/station/s_44437/Radio_Nacional_AM_980.aspx Only BBCWS audible on 6195 tonight, so maybe Rádio Nacional on 6195 last night a one-off or transmitter site error?? (Alan Pennington, Caversham, UK, AOR 7030+ / longwire, ibid.) Yes, see above (gh) ** BRAZIL. 11830, 2020, Rádio Daqui, new station first noted 30/6 with good signal. Popular vocals, frequent idents. Note regularly since to close around 2100 but sometimes up to 20 minutes later, 30/6 (Bryan Clark at Mangawhai with AOR7030+ and Alpha Delta Sloper, EWEs to NE, E and SE, plus various 100 metre BOGs to the Americas, July NZ DX Times via DXLD) ** BRAZIL. 11815, July 15 at 0327 fair signal with Brazilian dialog, from R. Brasil Central. 11765 about same level with SRDA, wacky wailing gospel huxter David Miranda, but with ACI from Cuba 11760. And both totally eclipsed by big signal from RNA 11780. Also traces of Bandeirantes on 11925v, but blasted away by 11935 splash [see NETHERLANDS ANTILLES]. 12175, July 15 at 0334, unstable distorted blob with hum vs CODAR, wailer David Miranda preaching again, and with some difficulty decided it`s // 11765 SRDA. But judging from previous Brasilian DX reports, the 12175 signal is a wandering spur from R. Globo, Rio, nominally 11805 as ZYE775, but unheard there, so rather a badly mistuned transmitter. I have also been wanting to catch RNA 11780 sign-off time, or more likely abrupt cut-off. It was still going at 0335 but gone at next check 0355. 12174, July 20 at 0523, David Miranda, the wacky wailing preacher of SRDA, poor signal vs CODAR, unstable carrier with its own rumble, presumably the 11805 R. Globo transmitter totally out of whack. However, inband 25m Brazilians were not audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Hi, I think that Globo does not use 11805kHz anymore. Can you hear it, Glen[n]? I try this frequency almost every day but nothing. But on the other side some of the SRDA TXs are on the air irregularly so maybe Globo reactivated the frequency of 11805 kHz last night when you heard the signal on 12174 kHz? (Karel Honzik, CZECHIA, HCDX via DXLD) I was alluding to some previous reports from Brazilian DXers that the source of the distorted broadcast signal in the 12+ MHz range was the R. Globo, Rio, transmitter which was/is supposed to be on 11805. I also heard it a few days before on approx. 12175. No, I never hear it on 11805. We think 12175 is not a spur of that but simply a very mistuned transmitter (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) Hi Glenn, What you have noted about spurious emissions of Davi Miranda also occurs to Bandeirantes 6090 kHz. Sometimes I can listen to spurious in 5990v kHz and the main carrier is deaf. Regards (Sarmento Campos, Brasil, radioescutas yg via DXLD) UNID Brazil. Best reception of a distorted audio noted around 2305 UT July 20 close to 12174 kHz, best on LSB mode, S=6-7 fair signal (Wolfgang Büschel, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews July 20, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. Re 10-28: ``6160.014, CKZU-Vancouver, 0801, CBC news by man, with several mentions of “Toronto.” In the clear and with no het, so presume (only for geographical reasons) that this is Vancouver. HOWEVER, the grey line at this hour favours BOTH St. John’s and Vancouver. 7 July (David Sharp, NSW Australia: FT-950, NRD-535D, R8, ICF-2010, SW7600-GR, etc., dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Don`t see how greyline would be possible, as it`s midnight in Vancouver, as dark as it gets, but near sunrise in NF (gh, DXLD)`` My version of Geoclock, at the time of reception, showed a sloping greyline, which went up the eastern coast of Canada, near St. John's; then flatlined across the middle upper third of the country, then a gentle slope to the SW over Yukon/BC. A bit of a stretch on my part with regards to Vancouver, but the software showed the greyline not too far to the north. (I double checked and sunset at Vancouver on 7 July was 9:18 pm, so greyline was an a couple of hours to the north). Take care, (David Sharp, NSW, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 6160.03, CKZU, Oldies with songs by Judy Collins, Country Joe and the Fish, Janis Joplin, etc. M and W host. 0656 promo by M mentioning AM and FM, then back to music with BTO. 0659 partial ID mentioning Vancouver. 0700 W with CBC news in slight echo with CKZN. 0806 CBC World service [sic] Web site given, then program about spying and the Cold War. Fady and slightly weaker of course than CKZN 6159.96. Very difficult to separate the two. (10 July) (Dave Valko, Dunlo PA, HCDX via DXLD) So they were 70 Hz apart = low audible het (gh) ** CANADA. Sackville appears to be making unexplained transmissions: 6100, UT July 15 at 0308, the RCI IS loop with English and French IDs is running, which should have finished with Spanish and signed off at 0305. (And is it colliding with YFR in English via Guiana French at 02-03 on 6100, as per EiBi?) 9625, July 15 at 0507 tune-in, continuous tone test; that`s right after the sign-off of CBCNQ service, so apparently the carrier stays on with tone, and likely the source of my previous obs of same tone much later, July 6 at 0623, as in DXLD 10-27 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Right now at 0108 UT, I am hearing Radio Sweden on 6010 kHz and Voice of Vietnam on 6175 kHz, both from Sackville and 165 kHz away from each other. I am also hearing their mixing products. Radio Sweden is audible on 6175 + 165, or 6340 kHz. Voice of Vietnam is on the lower image frequency of 5845 kHz (Rich van Riel, NH, UT July 18, harmonics yg via DXLD) ** CANADA. 15235 and 17735, RCI, Saturday July 17 at 2005, fair signals aimed at Europe and Africa, respectively with ``Masala Canada``, interview about Vision TV. They pat themselves profusely on the back for being oecumenical, but not a word about Atheism. This focuses on their prime audience, south Asians. Just before ReVision Quest, I happened to be listening to CBC News via Regina webcast, July 17 at 1604, when they announced that the wrong ``The House`` was aired on the network today, and people should hear the right episode from web archive! I`ll bet the producers are steamed (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CANADA. CTV SHUTDOWN BLUFF --- Looks like CTV's threat to shut down all those rebroadcasters last August was a bluff after all. Not only are the stations on that death list (such as CKCO-2) still on the air, but ones like CFTO-54 Peterborough will now not only survive as an analog, but will get a new life as a DTV... "CTVglobemedia stated that it intended to convert its transmitter serving Bobcaygeon/Peterborough." Although 100's of Canadian stations will likely disappear, the loss of "substitution" privileges (being able to override US stations on cable with their Canadian stations during program simulcasts), may be enough to keep OTA stations alive where numbers warrant, such as a city the size of Peterborough. CRTC PROVIDES UPDATE ON THE TRANSITION TO DIGITAL TELEVISION --- http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/com100/2010/r100716.htm OTTAWA-GATINEAU, July 16, 2010 ? The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today issued additional information concerning the transition from analog to digital television, which must be completed by August 31, 2011. The CRTC is making this data available to assist the broadcasting industry in its preparations for the switchover. Canadians who subscribe to cable or satellite television services will not be affected by the digital transition. Only viewers who watch television stations using a `rabbit-ears` antenna may experience some change in the way they receive television signals. It is estimated that up to 857,000 households in larger markets do not subscribe to either cable or satellite. These consumers may need to purchase digital converter boxes to continue watching local stations on their existing television sets. The boxes cost up to $75 for each television in the home. In smaller markets, some local stations may decide not to convert to digital, but instead rely solely on cable and satellite companies to deliver their signal to viewers. The CRTC will modify its regulation to allow television distributors to provide a free alternative to affected viewers in those smaller markets. These companies will be able to offer a package of local and regional stations at no charge to viewers. In order to receive the free local package, some consumers may have to purchase a satellite receiver and dish at a minimum cost of $300, depending on the number of televisions in the home. At most, 31,500 households could be affected. Consumer awareness and education is a key component of the digital transition. Members of the broadcasting industry are expected to actively participate in the creation and implementation of a national consumer education program. Such a program should start no later than March 2011 to ensure Canadians are well informed. At the request of the industry, the CRTC is prepared to facilitate the establishment of trial markets ahead of the August 2011 deadline. This would provide an opportunity to assess the adequacy of all measures for the transition, including consumer education measures. 73, (via Charles Gauthier, Brossard, QC, July 16, WTFDA via WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DXLD) ? Is CRTC unaware of TV antennas any more sophisticated than rabbit ears? (Glenn Hauser, DXLD) ** CHINA. Re 10-28: ``7270. PBS Nei Menggu, 1208, July 14. CNR1 jamming, besides usual spots 9605, 11785, 11805, 12040, etc., also vs RTI on 11710 [see KOREA NORTH] making SAH of some 10 Hz, and // 15795 an echo apart, July 17 at 1241 vs All India Radio`s Chinese service, which the ChiCom must also block from reaching the People (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) There is a strong Firedrake jammer on 11560 kHz this evening (17 July 2010). First noted at 1755 UT, off at 1800. But was there again at 1850 recheck, off at 1900, back at 1904. Not sure what is on this frequency at this time that would warrant Chinese jammming. Nothing audible during Firedrake pauses on the hour. Any ideas? (Tony Rogers, Birmingham, UK, AOR 7030+ / LW, BDXC-UK yg via DXLD) In such cases the default assumption is that usually inaudible Sound of Hope peanutwhistle jumped to the frequency, drawing the wrathful overkill jamming. Or maybe RFA moved from 11540? (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Thanks to David Towers and Steve Calver who confirm Firedrake again this evening (20 July 2010) on 11560 kHz at 1650 and 1731 UT respectively. I tuned in at 1745 and again noticed breaks on the hour at 1800 and 1900 before resuming approx 4 minutes later. Did a quick check this evening at 1800 and Radio Free Asia in Mandarin was jammed by CNR-1 on all of its frequencies: 7355 9355 9455 9540 9865 11540 11700 and 13625 kHz, whereas last night between 1800-1900 all frequencies were accompanied by Firedrake (Tony Rogers, Birmingham, UK, AOR 7030+ / LW, BDXC-UK yg via DXLD) Firedrake July 18, all // today when checked: 8400, inaudible at 1215, but very poor at 1217 9040, fair at 1215 and 1315 10500, good at 1218 // 9040 and 8400; poor at 1312 13100, fair at 1225 and 1311 13970, good at 1222; gone at 1310 14700, unheard at any of these times 15555, poor at 1307 15795, very poor at 1226 mixing with AIR Chinese and/or CNR1 jamming. Still very poor at 1308 15850, poor at 1226. By 1308, 15850 FD had risen to very good. Aoki does not have anything near this frequency, so we can only assume Sound of Hope had jumped here 15285, CNR1 and BBCWS Mandarin via Singapore fighting it out at 1310 15330, motorboating noise at 1309 and CNR1 Chinese vs BBC Uzbek via Thailand. Firedrake July 19: 9040, fair at 1254 10500, good at 1256 // 9040 14700, fair at 1259, gone at 1347 No others found up to 16 MHz by 1300 15520, CNR1 jamming plus motorboating noise, July 19 at 1349; CNR1 was // but a reverb apart from 15285 vs BBC. 15520 must be today`s landing spot for V. of Tibet via Tajikistan at 1330-1400, which in Aoki list dated 19 July is shown on 15530 with *jamming. Firedrake July 20, all //: 8400, JBA at 1258 10500, good at 1336. At this point in every hour there is a relatively quiet, slow melodic passage, with drums beginning to come back at :37 15140, poor at 1255, no others up to 16 MHz before 1300; vs SOH 100 W 15520, fair with het at 1336, very poor at 1355; vs V of Tibet via Tajikistan 15670, poor at 1337, very poor at 1354; vs RFA in Tibetan via UAE [and non]. Firedrake July 21: 15545, poor at 1235; a bit earlier I was just hearing a tone/het. CNR1 jamming, in time order, no doubt also against V. of Tibet: 1334 on 15530, CNR1 + motorboating noise. Aoki has VOT in Chinese, not Tibetan at 1330-1400 via Tajikistan on 15530, but it`s a real jumper 1335 on 15520, Chinese not // 15530, het but no further jamming. I guess this was V. of Tibet via Tajikistan, momentarily escaping the jamming which was on 15530, but not for long 1336 on 15430, CNR1 // 15285 mix. VOT in Tibetan via UAE is on 15430 per Aoki, at 1330-1400. UAE site may not be as adept at jumping around but I think this one has also done that in past 1338 on 15560, CNR1 + motorboating has jumped here from 15530, but cuts off at 1340* *1340 back to 15530 the CNR1 + motorboating but only until 1341:30* *1342 now on 15570, CNR1 + mb + het. This time it seems to stay put past 1400 when the het is still heard but VOT should be finished (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CHINA. Nevertheless, 15360 with whine also audible on plus and minus 50 kHz spurs, 15410 stronger than 15310 JBA with same pitch whine. At 1305 check, 13680 was missing as often happens, while 13780 was good, but consequently no 13880 or 13580 leapfrog spurs possible. RHC Spanish, July 17 at 0043 check: 5970, 6000, 6060, 6110, 6120. 5040 which should have been in French, was off the air as it has been a lot lately, tho 5025 Rebelde was audible as usual. Checking for English, at 0101, 6000 and better 5970, the rest in Spanish. One YL introduced Ed Newman and Ann(e) Sullivan as ``news anchors`` starting at 0102. The RHC schedule at http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_frecuencia/frecuencias.htm still does not show anything on 5970 before 0100, just: 01-05 English and 07-11 Spanish, tho it`s consistently in English at 05-07 too. Perhaps that is what should go in the blank space for English to San Francisco at 05-07! This sked has been amended, however, to show 6150 with English instead of Spanish at 05-07, as we have been logging it the past week. 5990, at 0050 and several earlier chex during the hour July 17, nothing but open carrier. Supposed to be CRI relay in Spanish. 9490, at 1158 July 17, whining jamming, presumably leftover against R. República, Sackville, at 23-02 only. Gone after 1200. 11775, PMS Anguilla with pulse jamming, July 17 at 1201, leftover from R. Martí at 23-03 only. Unlike the morning before, this time 13780 was the missing frequency at 1340, while 13680 was on. By 1432 both were on for ``Cancionero Iberoamericano`` music, but 13680 had a big hum and lower modulation. Leapfrog also on 13880, not audible on 13580. That might explain why transmitter for 6010 was missing at 0526, when on 6150 I was astounded to hear an announcement in Esperanto, about the 95a Universala Kongreso de Esperanto, Havano, 17-24 julio. By the time I checked the English // channels 5970 and 6060 at 0527, they and 6150 were back in English. So was the weekly Esperanto semihour just ending, retimed to 0500 instead of 0700 Sundays? Perhaps this week only, there will be more specials or changes in Esperanto from RHC, as this is a Very Big Deal for Cuba. 9490, VOA Korean via THAILAND, July 18 at 1213 marred by pulse jamming, not DPRK-like, but DCJC-like, totally out of the time when ``needed`` against Radio República via Sackville on 9490 at 23-02 weeknights. See also VENEZUELA [non] 11760, at 2017 Sunday July 18, checking for RHC DXers Unlimited at its new Sunday time, but just open carrier with bits of distorted modulation. Wiggle that patchcord! It`s the only English frequency for this broadcast, so no Arnie, SOB. 2027, can recognize fragments of ``El Condor Pasa``; 2033 more bits of modulation, and I realize at 2037 that 11760 is attempting to emit in Spanish, not English anyway, since it matches 11730. Things are SNAFU at RHC, since 12030 is not in Spanish but Arabic // 15370 at 2040 check, an echo apart. Arabic supposed to be on 15370 only. Furthermore: 13750, the frequency supposedly used only for ``Aló, Presidente`` when El Hugazo feels like doing a Sunday afternoon show from Venezuela, which after several week`s absence was confirmed on air at 1630 UT July 18, was still transmitting when next checked at 2019 but open carrier interrupted now and then for a few words of Spanish which proved to be an echo apart from RHC itself on // 11730, 15380, a bit of Andean music, and concluding a secret replay of ``Formalmente Informal`` concerning Ecuador. At 2021:30, audio stops on all three frequencies, and 13750 goes off at 2022*. Presumably that was just spillover after whenever Chávez finished. 12030, July 19 at 2024, RHC in Portuguese an echo apart from // 15370 which is supposed to be the only frequency. Ditto Arabic after 2030. No spurs audible from 12030, but weak. 11760, unlike the day before, on the air in English and with adequate modulation, July 19 at 2032 with report on the Esperanto Congress. At 2105 off the air when supposed to be in French. 11730, not noticed earlier in the hour, but July 19 at 2039, RHC Spanish is about 10 dB stronger than English on 11760 --- but just barely modulated. 11730 is normally a much weaker signal. So they switched around transmitters and/or antennas, but what`s the point without decent modulation?? 11730 still JBM at 2105 in Spanish. 11760 was previously used for English past 0500, but seldom heard lately, or in Spanish. However, July 20 at 0518, there it is, RHC VG in English; 25m is hot tonight. Is this on the schedules at http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_frecuencia/frecuencias.htm or http://www.radiohc.cu/ingles/c_frecuencia/frecuencias.htm ? of course not! At 0529 I check 49m to see what configuration of English and Spanish is in effect tonight. 5970, 6060 and 6150 are in English, Ed plugging ``Real Audio`` even tho it isn`t that format. 6010 is still missing, maybe that transmitter is now on 11760? Or 9525, as at 0531 it`s still running in Spanish with heavy hum // 6120, 6110 and 5040. 6120 and 6110? An echo apart. 6110 is supposed to switch to 6150 at 0500, whatever the language, in order to avoid colliding with NHK via Sackville, English at 0500-0530 only. Wish I had tuned in before 0530 to confirm such a clash. 12030, at 1245 July 20, interview about Esperanto, the subject carefully speaking the artificial language, responding to comments in Spanish. Now 12030 has the 12000 and 12060 spurs with buzz in between, but weakly (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DX LISTENING DIGEST) RHC, is it SNAFU or FUBAR? SNAFUBAR covers it. 12030 which supposedly is Spanish-only, after excursions into Portuguese and Arabic at 20-21, July 20 at 2014 check was back to Spanish. And also July 21 at 2035. But now 12030 is // 11760, which means the latter/lower is in Spanish instead of English. By 2124, 11760 had resumed is nominal schedule, an hour of French. And at 2035, only 15370 was in Arabic (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** CUBA [non]. 9490-, July 21 at 2300, R. República signing on with program summary for 21 de julio. Definitely on the low side, tho unseems as much as 80 Hz, where Wolfgang Büschel measured it 23 hours earlier, 9489.92, leading him to think it might be from somewhere other than Sackville as overtly scheduled. But the big signal here must be from a major site such as SAC, well atop the jamming at the outset. R. Cairo continues to exhibit horrible disconnect between program produxion and listener reception. Both studio and transmitter operation are at fault, often combining for impossibly audible and totally wasted broadcasting. Someone please tell Pres. Mubarak that heads need to roll at ERTU. Er, not quite so explicitly. Altho earlier UT July 15 0318 as in last report, I had found Arabic on 9305 well-modulated, next check at 2340, signal is good, but only bits of audio are making it thru at modulation peaks, totally unusable. 11590, during English to western NAm, at first check 2308 or so was barely modulated; but at 2340 had good modulation during Arabic music. YL announcement which followed at 2349 was just barely modulated, and combined with her accent, made readability=1. Sounded like she was way off-mike in the studio. T-storm in the next county did not help either. 2352 recorded music resumed and once again modulation OK. UT July 16 at 0011 check, 11590 just concluding lesson 136 of Arabic by Radio. However, the growing popularity of the privately-owned Nile FM has taken English-language programming in Egypt to another level, as millions of young people tune into the station daily for a lot more than hip-hop and the latest pop diva ballad. With its slogan as Cairo's No. 1 hit music station, Nile FM, which began airing in 2003, offers a wide range of shows, including morning news roundups and discussions of everyday life issues, from littering to romance, that conservative state-run radio stations would not dare to mention in the Arab world's most populous country. Erin Fleming, who has worked at Nile FM for more than three years, has become a prominent voice of the station. The broadcaster from Detroit has been encouraged by the feedback she receives while introducing sensitive issues that were previously considered taboo. "We discuss topics like prostitution, sexual harassment, women's rights, relationships and dating among others," she says. "Every now and then I get a phone message from someone who warns me from the repercussions of talking about such issues, but those are only from people who are in fear I might get harmed or something." Tarek Abdelaziz, 26, spends a considerable part of his day driving to and from work. He says he finds the company of Nile FM helpful in coping with Cairo's incessant traffic. The radio station's "traffic updates, which are the first of their kind in Egypt, are crucial," he says. "Their programs shed light on many thorny and important topics, providing us with an easy way of interacting, learning and freely voicing our opinions on any given discussion. I follow their shows when I'm at home too." -- Amro Hassan in Cairo Source: EGYPT: English-language radio Nile FM gaining popularity as shows deal with once-taboo issues | Babylon & Beyond | Los Angeles Times http://bit.ly/asaT5F (via Yimber Gaviria, Colombia, DXLD) Same: http://tinyurl.com/2uosnup and: EGYPT'S PUBLIC RADIO: IS ANYONE LISTENING? --- Nadine Emile Can the radio survive mounting competition from other media? I'm currently (1730z) noting Ethiopia on 7165, in French, weak/fair and there is a UNID station on 7160, in Arabic with approximately same level. Both stations suffer from local high QRN. Can someone help ID? Greetings from Portugal (Pedro Turner, July 19, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) Maybe it's not Arabic, but a somewhat similar language (Turner, 1741 UT, ibid.) My guess would be V of the Broad Masses of Eritrea, which per Aoki goes from Arabic to Somali at 1730 on 7175 or 7185, but it does jump around. Anything on those frequencies? 1800 Amharic, 1830-2000 Arabic. (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) Hello Glenn, Thanks for the info. Nothing noted here up the band until 7200 where arrives presumed R. Omdurman, in Arabic, also weak but less QRN. Greetings from Portugal (Pedro Turner, ibid.) 7160 & 7165 have a great signal here in south Italy (Roberto Scaglione, Sicily, ibid.) Hello Roberto, I agree with Glenn that it must be VOBM Eritrea. reception to be improving a little with time. Can you check the ID? I expect to somewhat improve my antennas, next August, when I'll have some spare time (I hope...), and will try to restart my struggle against high level of man made noise. Living in a urban apartment is not the ideal spot for DXing!!! (Pedro Turner, Portugal, ibid.) Now it's very difficult, signals are going down, no more signal on 7160... now 7165 and 7175. I'm recording... (Scaglione, 1828 UT, ibid.) Hello! The station went abruptly off-air at 1821.15, and appeared on 7175 but suffers from awful Ham QRM. Thank you all for all the help (Pedro Turner, 1826 UT, ibid.) 'awful' is the wrong rating, José. According to ITU plan March 2009 this segment 7000-7200 kHz belong to Amateur Radio area also in Europe and Eastern Asian world, not on broadcasting section anymore. Radio war between Ethiopia and Eritrea started some two years ago, when Ethiopia bought some 4 powerful shortwave transmitters for white noise (like DRM) jamming. I guess in next decade we will hear these African stations hopping around these 100 kHz on 40mb over and over again. 73 wb (Wolfgang Büschel, ibid.) OFFSHORE PIRATE RADIO STATION PLAN FOR UNCENSORED FIJI NEWS Radio Australia news report that an Australian-based opponent of Fiji's interim government wants to set up a floating radio station to broadcast uncensored news into the country. Usaia Waqatairewa, the Sydney-based president of the Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement, says the idea is to put an antenna on a ship which would be located in international waters, outside Fiji's legal jurisdiction. The same concept was used by the so-called pirate radio stations which broadcast pop music to Britain, and New Zealand's Radio Hauraki, in the 1960s. Mr Waqatairewa says people in Fiji need the news that the Bainimarama government isn't letting them hear. But the problem though is that internet access in Fiji is very limited at the moment, it always has been very limited. It's probably limited to about five per cent of the population in the urban areas. What we're planning to do is to if we could in some way set up a freedom radio that does not have the control of the regime in Fiji and be able to broadcast out the real news, instead of their propaganda and what they have censored themselves. HILL: Well, how can you set up a radio station to broadcast into Fiji. I mean you can't base a radio mast actually in Fiji, can you? WAQATAIREWA: I'm planning to put a boat out into international water. They would not be able to touch it, put powerful antennas up on there that would be able to then broadcast out to the Fiji audience on an AM/FM frequency. HILL: Sort of like the pirate radio stations in the North Sea in the 1960s that broadcast pop music into the United Kingdom? WAQATAIREWA: Precisely that. We will also broadcast the pop music they banned in Fiji. For example, they recently banned the Te Amo song from Rihanna which is a favourite among the young people of Fiji. HILL: Setting up a pirate radio station's probably a pretty expensive proposition. Do you guys have the backing, do you have the money for that sort of thing? WAQATAIREWA: Eh well, nothing is impossible. We are trying to talk to supporters all over the world. There are a lot of supporters for freedom fighters out there. The government actually promote democracy and freedom and the various that actually exist in their own country. They would like that to be exported around, especially our metropolitan neighbours, Australia and New Zealand would like to have a democratic and free Pacific Islands. HILL: Are you suggesting that you actually getting support from the Australian and New Zealand governments for this idea? WAQATAIREWA: Hmm, we're talking to them. The door is open. It has to take a political wheel in as you know. There is going to be an election in 30 days time, so at the moment everything is hanging in the air for the time being, but it will eventually get there once the government comes in. We'll be able to then proceed onto something constructive. HILL: What kind of programs would you broadcast? Your complaining that there is censorship in Fiji. Wouldn't your stuff simply be the same sort of thing, but from the other side? WAQATAIREWA: Well, we need to hear the other side. At the moment, the other side is not talking at all. The other side is not being heard, which is our side. I regularly tune into Fiji One or the Bull FM which is the Fiji language station on the national broadcast network in Fiji and there's about three or four sessions there of just government officials coming in and bombarding the people with government propaganda, that the bridge they are building on this side or the agricultural show that is going on the other side or that Bainimarama has done this or Bainimarama has done that. The way they portray it as if it's Bainimarama's own initiative or if the money is coming out of Bainimarama's pocket. But when you look at the reality of this, the other flip side of the coin, is that this government has so irresponsibly gone out and taken soft loans from China and from everywhere else willing to give them money to be able to do this project. HILL: You'll be transmitting from a boat. Boats can be vulnerable? Are you afraid the government might do something about the existence of that boat in international waters? WAQATAIREWA: Well, that will be an act of war if it's an Australian registered boat or it's an American registered boat. As a matter of fact, we'll try and get an American registered boat and see whether they get to do something on it, especially in international waters. It's going to be piracy, or it's going to be an act of war (via DXLD) PLANNED FIJI OFFSHORE STATION MAY USE A DUTCH SHIP Usaia Waqatairewa, President of the Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement, has told The Australian newspaper he is discussing arrangements with a Dutch group that owns a ship equipped for broadcasting. The 8/2010 issue of the Radio-Kurier magazine will include an interview with the head of the Ismaning station. Herein he officially confirms that 6085 kHz will be shut down at the end of October due to insufficient listeners numbers. In October the public broadcasters will have to give reasons for keeping AM transmitters on air, and on this hearing they will have to quote such figures. For some time the 6085 kHz signal was on air around the clock, with silence as audio content between midnight and 6 AM local time. Since 2007 they now switch off the RF signal overnight because this saves a lot of operational costs and it has been found that the transmitter can be switched on every morning without problems. For 801 kHz it is under discussion to use it for Bayern Plus, a music station for elder people, instead of the currently aired on3radio, a youth station that basically is just a jukebox, with little live programming which recently has been further cut back (not that Bayern Plus would be much different in this regard). But no decision about a date for such a switch-over has been made so far. BR folks had good contacts to their IBB neighbours. One day they got a phone call that "we have to told you that we'll be gone in three months". The satellite uplink, the last thing that remained there after 1197 kHz had been shut down, has been moved to Kuwait. A few other pieces of equipment went to Lampertheim. Critics comment that BR has simply to blame itself for the insufficient listener numbers, arguing that all these people that purchase a shortwave radio for ten Euros would be at least a potential audience if 6085 kHz would still run in AM. And making such a science of turning off the plate current overnight is quite remarkable as well. http://www.ratzer.at/Ismaning2010.html http://picasaweb.google.de/ferienradio/Ismaning2010# The ex-1107 kHz transmitter is, as can be seen, still there (Kai Ludwig, Germany, July 17, shortwavesites yg via DXLD) ** GUYANA. 16/17 July Band Scan 2330 to 0010: 3290, GBC with music 2335 (Robert Wilkner, Pompano Beach, Florida, Drake R8 - Icom 746Pro DL - NRD 535D - 2010XA, 60 meter band dipole ~ Noise Reducing Antenna, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** HAWAII [and non]. TIME TICKS ACROSS THE PACIFIC - CHRONOHERTZ STATION WWVH In our opening topic today, Time Ticks Across the Pacific, we present the story of another chronohertz station, this time the story of station WWVH in Hawaii. In actual reality, it is the story of two consecutive chronohertz stations, one on the island of Maui and the other on the island of Kauai. We go back to November 22 in the year 1948, and it was then that the first of these two stations was inaugurated. The location was against the coastline near Kihei on the lower west side of the island of Maui. At the time, three transmitters were in use, all at 1 kW, and they radiated the time signal service on exactly 5 10 & 15 MHz. The antenna systems beamed the signals from this new Hawaiian station towards the west for the benefit of American interests in the Pacific. Interestingly back at that era, the station in Hawaii was turned off twice each day, around 0700 & 1900 UTC, so that the staff at WWVH could check the transmissions from the mother station, WWV, which was located at Beltsville in Maryland at the time. In this way, the accuracy of the transmissions from WWVH could be checked against the infinitely accurate transmissions from WWV. The time distance between the two stations was just 27 mili-seconds. In July 1964, voiced time announcements were introduced and these announcements conveyed the standard time in Hawaii itself. Eight years after its inauguration, the power level at each of the three transmitters in the station was doubled, to an output of 2 kW each, still on the same three channels, 5 10 & 15 MHz. Ten years later again, another channel was taken into regular usage, this time 2.5 MHz with a power output of just 1 kW. However, at about this time, it was becoming very evident that a new station would be required. The shoreline had been eroded by 75 ft and the ocean waters were encroaching upon the station. In fact, the ocean was now quite close to the main building, and also to the antenna tower in use for the 15 MHz transmissions. In addition, there was no air conditioning in the transmitter building and corrosion from the tropical salty air was taking its toll on the electronic equipment. During the year 1968, Congress in Washington DC gave approval for the allocation of funding for a completely new chronohertz station in Hawaii. This new station, with a whole set of new equipment, was installed into a new building located on a 30 acre property in the navy base at Barking Sands at Kokole Point, near Kekaha on the south western edge of the island of Kauai. A total of seven new transmitters were installed, all made by the AEL Company, and all rated at 10 kW, except for one at 2½ kW. The old station on Maui was progressively closed down and the new station on Kauai was progressively brought into operation in July 1971. These new transmitters operated on the same standard frequencies, with 10 kW each on 5 10 & 15 MHz. The power output on the low frequency 2.5 MHz channel was just 2½ kW at the time, though this was increased to 5 kW shortly afterwards. For each main transmitter, there was also a standby transmitter. In 1983, two of the AEL transmitters were removed and replaced by three Elcom-Bauer transmitters. On at least two occasions, hurricanes have damaged the WWVH shortwave station. In 1982, Hurricane Iwa cut off the reticulated power supply, and the station operated on emergency power for a whole week. In 1992, Hurricane Iniki caused considerable damage and the station was on the air for several days with just one transmitter, 5 MHz at half power. Some ten years ago, new antenna systems were installed at WWVH and these are described as fibre glass whip antennas. Each antenna is encased in fibre glass and a copper wire runs the full length of the whip. In this way, corrosion from the salty air is minimized. Currently, there is a total of eight active transmitters, primary & standby, at WWVH Hawaii. The main transmitters are powered at 10 kW and the standby units at 5 kW and they can be heard almost worldwide on four channels, 2.5 5 10 & 15 MHz. The modulation level of the various broadcast services is different for each feature. The BCD time codes are inserted at 25% modulation, the steady tones at 50%, voice announcements at 75%, and the actual time pulses, the ticking of the clock, are at 100% level. Back in the year 1977, it was announced that station WWVH received around 100 visitors each week and 200 reception reports. These days, they still receive many visitors, and they still receive a steady flow of reception reports. Station WWVH at Kekaha in Hawaii can be heard at least some time of each day on at least one channel almost anywhere in the world. They readily verify all genuine reception reports with a three panel QSL card. You can identify the Hawaiian station by the voice of the announcer, a woman, speaking in English. If you have not yet verified each of their four channels, why not take the opportunity to do so? (Adrian Peterson, IN, AWR Wavescan script July 11 via DXLD) ** INDIA. AIR Guwahati on 9880 kHz --- On July 12th around 0003 UT onwards, I heard All India Radio-Guwahati on 9880 kHz in addition to its normal frequency on 4940 kHz & 729 kHz. Actually, my target frequency was 9885 kHz during 0000-0020 & 0030-0058. I wanted to listen DW Radio-English News & Sports Report & then later from 0030 UT onwards the INBOX Programme. But as I observed interference I checked 9880 and to my surprise, it was AIR-Guwahati on its morning transmission in Assamese. I heard frequency & metre band announcement at least twice - only their normal frequencies announced with metre band. But the signal faded away after 0030 gradually. Perhaps it was due to some technical error. Signal strength was good during the half hour and causing heavy sideband splatter on DW Radio-English on 9885 kHz specially during 0003-0020 sometime. I used my Grundig YB 400 Rx + external antenna. Later, 16th July 2010 as per my checking I didn't observe the same again. 73 & 55 (Gautam Kumar Sharma, Abhayapuri, Assam, India, via Alokesh Gupta, dx_india yg via DXLD) 2 x 4940 = 9880 kHz {unwanted} harmonic Did you check this harmonic on various different receivers in \\ on same time? In order to avoid unwanted internal spurs in the receiver. Maybe some vagrancy low power watts out of antenna / antenna matrix or nearby mast installations. Mostly not heard every day, depends on [Indian subcontinent] propagation condition. Wb (Wolfgang Büschel, Germany, ibid.) QSL Wolfy. on the dot your comments. Harmonics & some spurious signals are generated at the transmitting site. Receiver generated spurious signals are also generated in the listener's receiver. So when funny signals are heard one might first think of such signal possibilities. 4940 second harmonic is on 9880 and is not a receiver generated spurious signal, so when propagation exists it can travel even thousands of miles. Sometimes the fundamental frequency might not propagate but the harmonic will. An example is 6025 Malaysia some years ago at noon in South Asia was not heard but 12050 was heard. There are many such examples. You might also check the 3rd and 4th harmonic when the second harmonic is observed. 14820 for Gwahati 3 x 4940. These days Japore on 5040 is having much transmitter malfunctioning. Might be worth trying 10080 kHz. Spurious signals are also generated at the transmitting site when two transmitters operate at the same time when the difference in the two transmitting frequencies produce signals + and - the two transmitting frequencies. These again can be heard many thousands of miles and many hops away. A classic example was TWR in The Netherlands Antilles here in South Asia. Closer home was Chennai in the 7 MHz band 7160 and 7280. the difference was 130 kHz and radio amateurs complained that Chennai was operating on 7050. Receiver generated spurious signals are heard when external antennas are connected and the RF input is too much for the receiver to overcome mixing products within the receiver. Cheaper transistor radios are very often plagued by such and even some of my $1000+ receivers can not help getting overloaded by Tiruvananthapuram on 5010 or Chennai on 4920 as they swamp my receiver. DX-ers should read some articles on the subject The first DXer who made radio hobbyists interested in Harmonic DXing more than 35 years ago is our good friend and much respected Glenn Hauser. I thank him for his great input. It’s a national channel hook up that most regional (some in MW too) relay. My local MW had some other programme at the hour. Last night it was a young Sitarist attached to the Dharwad (?) AIR as per the announcement. His father too was an AIR artist. I heard the programme till end. In my location in Eastern India, 9425 had the best audio followed closely by 4880 and 4810. Aizawl 5050 features some excellent local choir. Come Yuletide and some of these choir perform in the national Doordarshan TV network. Great experience always. Cheers (Ashok Satpathy, India, July 19, ibid.) Hi Victor, Urumqi only uses 4980 kHz in winter season, from November to April. 73, (Dmitry Mezin, Kazan, Russia, ibid.) Thanks a lot Ashok for the info. In Sinhala we call "Sasthriya Sangeeta". Our language is basically Sanskrit and Pali based. Closest to Bangla and Hindi. Would like to know where exactly you are located. When Aizawl first came up on SW I was hearing it before any info came on the DX scene as that was pre Internet days unlike today, when we see info when it`s just an idea of some Union Minister!! It was a thrill to listen to the station and then analyse the language and put it as coming from N. East India. I had never heard the city name Aizawl and I had to go thru my Indian Sub Continent map to discover it. My report brought in a very nice letter from the Chief Engineer. I get up to sip my tea listening to Aizawl on Sunday mornings at 0030 and you stop everything and keep listening. Maybe in my poorwa athma I was born there. Hi! I miss Kohima 4850 now, another nice station. Of course Itanagar 4990, Imphal 4775, Gwahali 4940 and Shillong 4970; but the best of them all is Aizawl and Kohima. Regards (Victor Goonetilleke, ibid.) Hello Victor, I guess Sinhala is more closely related to Oriya the language of Orissa state. Geographical area of the present Orissa state comprised the historical Kalinga Empire. There are well documented movement and interaction of Kalinga people with Sri Lanka including the journey of the Sacred Tooth to Senkadagalapura Temple in Kandy. BTW, Jeypore is the only SW (5040/6040) Tx in the state. I too trace my ancestry to Orissa and can see the imprint of the Oriya names in there modern Sri Lankan counterparts. Of course I am historically challenged and “standard disclaimers” apply! I live in Jamshdpur and you will be surprised to note that this small city used to have a number of Sinhalese folks in 60’s. Most came to work in the new hospital that TATA Motors established for it workforce. Purportedly a group of Sinhalese were met by chance in Chennai rail station by a Tata manager and somehow persuaded to come onboard. By 70’s some of them were also working with the main factory and the company run schools. Those days most English beat groups had one or two Sinhalese musicians. I still know one back from the days but its been ages since I met him. Aizwal (and other NE India towns) are some of the most beautiful in India. I was fortunate to visit the region in the 80’s and still have very fond memories. People of the NE states are very musically inclined. The 70’s cult Indian rock band The Great Society was based in Shillong. This town supposedly holds the only Bob Dylan Festival in India. Music is deeply entrenched in the region’s indigenous traditions and everyday lives, therefore, it is only natural that the north eastern AIR stations get to showcase some of the finest musical talents in India. Incidentally, one of the founding members of The Great Society heads the western music department of AIR Shillong. Now if only he can be pursued to take care of that odious hum in 4970! Cheers (Ashok, ibid.) Thanks for the lovely info. Is Oriya also close to Bangla? Maybe it`s not a Dravidian language? Oh yes many of the names like Jayapura, is identical. Pura is town/city in Sinhala. The history of our countries are very closely linked. I dream of the day when we can travel freely without visas etc. The Mannar/Danaskody rail and ferry is to be revived, hopefully soon and then it would be pretty cheap as well. My wife and I watch a lot of NDTV and other Indian channels on satellite TV and I love the two guys who travel round India tasting food!! He took us the Kohima and also Arunachal Pradesh. Really beautiful and not crowded and the scenery is breathtaking. We must meet more often on Skype!! Regards (Victor Goonetilleke, ibid.) ** INDIA. FM SET TO STAY AS RADIO EXECS CONSIDER DIGITAL'S FUTURE Sunday Independent By Christian McCashin July 18 2010 http://www.independent.ie/national-news/fm-set-to-stay-as-radio-execs-consider-digitals-future-2263311.html Ireland's millions of radio listeners have been told they will not have to throw their sets away after the Government vowed it would not be switching off the country's FM signal. Britain and parts of Europe are planning to switch off their analogue signal in favour of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), sparking fears that the same would happen here. Standard radios can't pick up the digital signal, which would make them, and millions of car radios, obsolete. RTE is already broadcasting DAB in parts of the country: the greater Dublin area; northeast Leinster; Cork city; and Limerick city. It ran a trial for two years from 2006 to 2008 and now has a licence to broadcast on DAB. It has set up RTE Junior, RTE Choice, RTE Pulse, RTE Gold, RTE Chill and RTE 2XM, all of which are only available on digital. Although some commercial stations used DAB during the two-year trial, none have since continued with the technology. RTE head of radio operations JP Coakley is a supporter of DAB and says FM is not good enough for the future. But campaigners against DAB -- which has already been branded an out- of-date technology -- feared the Government would follow Europe's lead and plan a switchover to it. However, a spokesman for Communications Minister Eamon Ryan told the Sunday Independent: "Ireland has no plan to cease VHF-FM band II. Ireland never had such a plan. "If digital radio delivery takes off, then it may be possible to phase out analogue radio, but there are many radios per household, so maybe 5-10 million FM radio receivers nationwide." Former RTE engineer Enda O'Kane, who oversaw the broadcaster's technology for the northeast and parts of Dublin, has led the campaign against any changeover to DAB. "This is very welcome news," he said. "The fear always was that we would follow the digital route, making millions of FM radios redundant. "The other problem with digital radios is that they use up to 1,000 per cent more power than analogue radios." But JP Coakley says that while FM was ubiquitous and had served radio well, radio needed an "enhanced functionality" for its future. "Very simply, FM is analogue, and we're going to need to do better than that. It's going to need to be storable, transferable, shareable, linkable, all of those things. And DAB offers that." The British government is considering a U-turn on its DAB policy. It had set a date of 2015 for switching off FM transmitters, but has now decided to put the date on hold, and may even abandon it altogether, after a backlash from millions of radio listeners perfectly happy with FM. Today FM chief executive Willie O'Reilly said: "What are the negatives for the consumer or the country if we do nothing? . . . In my view, none. "So technology is in a kind of flux. What we have is a heritage technology that is performing very well. "So we should be slow to change. We should experiment . . . but very slow to damage something that we have that is so successful and which is so well regarded by the public. That's the thing." The problem for DAB is the huge importance of car radio listeners. If car manufacturers do not embrace the technology by fitting DAB radios as standard, millions of motorists face the expense of buying new, compatible radios. Mr O'Kane added: "RTE is doing its best to make us aware of their new services on digital radio, while the commercial stations are no longer participating. Is DAB too old and likely to become the Betamax of radio in recessionary times?" Following our forward to the local newspaper of the July 12 FCC notice about fining KEIF, the story finally made the top of the front page on July 17: http://enidnews.com/localnews/x2114030259/KEIF-hit-with-FCC-fines (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: ** OKLAHOMA. July 16, 2010, KEIF HIT WITH FCC FINES By Chris Dell, Staff Writer, Enid News and Eagle ENID — The Rocket radio station recently received an unwelcome blast of fines from Federal Communications Commission. The fines were handed down for a series of violations that date back six years, drawing applause from one of the station’s competitors and even a former board member. KEIF-LP, a low-power FM station licensed to Enid Public Radio Association, was fined $5,000 for selling advertisements and $5,000 for broadcasting from an antenna that was almost double the legal height. Low-power FM stations are only allowed to broadcast nonprofit educational programming from an antenna height of 33 meters. According to an FCC report, KEIF, which brands itself as 104.7 The Rocket, was distributing advertising rate cards to local businesses and broadcasting promotional advertisements on its station. The rate card stated The Rocket’s “classic rock” format offers “great result for your advertising dollar,” according to the report. The report also alleges the station broadcast from an antenna height of nearly 62 meters. Chisholm Trail Broadcasting, which owns several stations in northwest Oklahoma, blew the whistle on The Rocket in May 2005. “Specifically, we find sufficient evidence of violations of the Commission’s enhanced underwriting and technical rules that, when considered together, evidence a pattern of abuse,” the report stated. Scott Clark, The Rocket’s chief engineer, declined comment Friday, except to say, “We’re not going off the air, ever.” Clark said he will hold a press conference next week to officially announce the station’s plans. Meanwhile, The Rocket continues to broadcast on 104.7 FM. The station has 30 days to pay the fine and 90 days to lower its antenna to the legal height, according to FCC. Abuse was from the beginning Former board member Steve Allen said the pattern of abuse was evident from the time the station earned its license from FCC in 2000. Allen and Richard Cox served on The Rocket’s board of directors until 2002, when they resigned “just to keep from being liable for what the station was doing,” said Allen, who is a former vocalist for the local band Sweet Misery. Allen said the station, which was licensed to broadcast educational programming, was airing classic rock music from the beginning. He said Clark, who founded the station, hand-picked a board of directors so the station would be eligible for a license, but the board never met. Allen also said Clark refused to recognize his resignation. “I knew this was going to happen one of these days,” Allen said. “I have a very, very good name around here, and I don’t want my name dragged through the mire because of that station.” FCC had a long history of tracking other allegations made against the station. The Rocket landed in hot water with FCC in 2004, when it was confronted about its advertising policies. Despite a slap on the wrist, The Rocket did not stop commercial advertising. In fact, commissioners with FCC, who were following up on a complaint from CTB, reported hearing some of the same advertisements on the station in 2007 they had heard three years earlier. CTB complaint Chisholm Trail Broadcasting is especially relieved to learn about the FCC’s sanctions. CTB first complained about The Rocket five years ago after it failed to comply with the FCC’s demand to remove its commercial advertisements in 2004. The station’s general manager, Sandy Daniels, said Allen and Cox approached the station and told them to report The Rocket for “knowingly breaking the rules,” she said. “Even the FCC gave them time to make changes, and they didn’t do it,” Daniels said. “It just baffles me.” Daniels said she has been contacted by other station managers in the area who have expressed their relief. They were particularly frustrated they had an extra competitor in the advertising business that legally was not allowed to be there. Not all saw The Rocket as a legitimate threat, though. Dan Smith, general manager at 103.1 KOFM in Enid, a country station owned by Williams Broadcasting, said one of the station’s advertisers in-formed him about a year ago of The Rocket’s selling in the area. However, the station didn’t file a formal complaint. “They didn’t really affect our advertising dollars or our signal,” he said. “Anybody can go apply for low-power FM station, and it’s a great thing for FM service. But when someone turns it into a for-profit or commercial-type station, they don’t understand media or broadcasting.” (via DXLD) See previous reports with linx to FCC notice, newspaper story. AL JAZEERA NAMED IN $1.2 BILLION LAWSUIT RELATED TO HEZBOLLAH ROCKET ATTACKS INTO ISRAEL. Posted: 17 Jul 2010 Shurat Hadin Israel Law Center press release, 13 July 2010: "On the fourth anniversary of start of the Lebanese-Israeli War, 91 American, Israeli and Canadian victims of Hezbollah rocket attacks have filed an unprecedented lawsuit against the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television network. The suit, Kaplan et al. v. Al-Jazeera (10 cv 5298), filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan, seeks $1.2 billion in compensatory damages plus punitive damages. The plaintiffs, whose family members were killed or who were themselves injured by rockets fired at Israel by Hezbollah between July 12 and August 14, 2006, allege that Al-Jazeera intentionally provided real-time coverage of the locations of missile strikes inside Israel in violation of Israeli security regulations, thereby enabling Hezbollah to aim its missiles more accurately. Al-Jazeera camera crews in Israel during the war were repeatedly detained by the Israeli police for broadcasting real-time information regarding the location of missile strikes, which Hezbollah utilized to more accurately aim their missiles at civilian population centers. Al- Jazeera is widely acknowledged to have an extreme anti-American and anti-Israel political agenda." While not a big sports fan, I did find myself watching a few World Cup soccer games -- generally listening to the Spanish commentary of RNE/REE on shortwave and satellite while watching the over-the-air HD signal of my local Univision affiliate. The latter, of course, was delayed by 5 or 6 seconds, because of the digital coding and decoding. As a result, I was able to ignore most of the game except when I could hear the announcers getting excited or shouting "gooooooooaaal," meaning I could look to the screen and see the key action a few seconds later. This struck me as being the reverse of when I used to listen to baseball games on AFRTS decades ago. REE makes for excellent listening on Sunday afternoons, 15110 and 17595 VG direct, and 17850 too via CR. July 18 in the 20-21 hour it`s world music on Mundofonía, apparently from Israel today. After 2105, scary narration and music about the Inquisition, and torture of heretix which went on long before that, in France as well as Spain, involvement of various popes. The electronickish music evoked souls wailing in torment, background for most of the hour. 2152 closing credits including locutor Luís García Sapinal(?). At 2155, 17595 sign-off announcement until 2300 with a new set of frequencies for America, while 17850 continued with REE promos, 2200 timesignal two seconds late, and ``En 5 Minutos`` introduced by Antonio Buitrago, something about the between-wars Residencia de Estudiantes. At 0115 back to 11795, and now there is a VG open carrier, even stronger than REE Spanish to SAm on 11680. 0117 finally joins audio in progress, YL opening the show with summary of upcoming topix. Audio is breaking up and with crosstalk from some music (crossmusic?). Address sefarad @ rtve.es Then into first item, interview; 0125 the subject starts singing, but the audio is still crackly, and lots of selective fading distortion. Frequency before 2200 completely covered by Issoudun, with remarkable buzz in the audio, presumably from the CRI studio. Cut off at 2156, unmasking a faint mess of fast SAH, with the dominating signal carrying Soviet-style run-up tones of a rather high pitch, which suggests that it could be indeed a Tbilisskaya signal. Programming started at 2200, probably in Russian, but I can not tell real details. Anyway there does not appear to be a transmission from the Ukraine, neither from a capable nor from a less capable facility, unless a now hopelessly deteriorated KHR site makes a futile attempt to transmit. > 2200-0200 on 7440 LV 500 kW / 303 deg to NAm En/Ukr/En/Ukr, > please check When first doing so at 2147 an open carrier was already on. When returning to 7440 it had become an unrecognizable mess of two signals, almost drowned out by much stronger Galbeni on 7435 (which has some crackling in the audio; tsk, still old equipment in the chain)? Herewith included three recordings of tonight, of 1 - 7440 at 1900 UT, 2 - 7440 at 1957 UT, 3 - and 6145 kHz at 1959 ... 2001 UT. 7440 was totally covered by CRI Xian signal in Hungarian and from 1930 UT Romanian, and RUI English underneath. Only at 1957...1958 UT a short piece of RUI Kharkiv signal was heard at S=9+5dB level, when Xian tx went OFF air. 6145 - first seconds originate from KBS Relay Skelton-UK around 1958- 1959 UT, then covered by CRI Polish via Issoudun France relay at 2000. I guess the Ukrainian RRT Telecomm. Concern people has not much experience. At least selection and registration of RUI frequencies for A-10 is on very bad level, like 6145 (QRM de CRI Issoudun), 7440 (QRM de CRI Xian), 9420 (QRM de ERT Greece, CRI/CNR Lingshi). vy73 (Wolfgang wwdxc Bueschel to Aleksandr Yegorov, via DXLD) ** U K. South Herts Radio is taking a bit of a Summer break. Live streaming will resume on Sunday 8th August 12 noon - 8 pm UK time / 1100-2000 UT. Meanwhile we will keep adding DX programs and other radio related material to listen again via our interactive player at http://www.southhertsradio.com/player.html Lots of rare documentary files will be uploaded in the next few weeks and we plan to slowly revamp our website as most people listen on- line. We will continue using low power FM devices in parts of Hertfordshire for what it's worth but our FM broadcasts are totally within the law and no-one seems to want to relay us on shortwave so our website will be the best way forward. Sponsored shows we still be broadcast like Happy Station and World Of Radio. When the live stream is down these will also be on the listen again player. When South Herts Radio began in 2007 is was meant to be a local radio station for the South Hertfordshire area of the U.K. As time went by more and more international content was broadcast with DX related programs to fill airtime. We only have Brendan & Tim making shows relating to the South Herts areas and they both come from and live in those areas. Their shows may sometimes feature the odd promo of where bands are playing in Hertfordshire but that's about it really. We couldn't be bothered about doing local news stories and such like in the end and none of has really had time to build on the original idea of what we were trying to do, so in the end, instead of being a community station we developed into an international station. So we now say we are South Herts Radio - International Radio from South Hertfordshire Untied Kingdom. We thought of changing the name but as we are well established it was better to keep it. Anyway people still seem to like it. We are relaying a web-cast for Laser Hot Hits on our listen live webpage to fill the times when SHR is off air in support of shortwave free radio. Disclaimer: I will keep SHR going even though it is a part time hobby. There does seem to be an interest in the live streams that go out most Sunday's and people are using the listen again and download features. As long as people are enjoying it I will commit to keeping it going. It is not the first priority on my to do list but the site will remain with the part time live stream. Something is better than nothing and there is a niche interest in this type of radio. For those that like it - enjoy it, it's free! (Radio 4 Documentary) This is a documentary to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Wednesday 21/07 at 1100 BST. (FM Only) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t28d4 Britain has been listening to pirate radio since the 1960s and today it is reported that there are more illegal broadcasters than ever. Former pirate DJ Trevor Nelson investigates the current scene. According to official Ofcom figures, there are around 150 illegal radio stations in the UK today and 16% of London regularly tunes in. The pirates argue they are an integral part of the British music industry and provide a community service that legal stations can't. But broadcasting regulator Ofcom says the FM dial is full. They claim the pirates are a problem, interfering with legal stations and the emergency service frequencies. More worryingly, Ofcom says there is evidence of links to serious crime such as money laundering, guns and drugs. Trevor revisits the world of illegal broadcasting to find out the truth behind today's pirate scene. Now a presenter on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and 1xtra, Trevor began his career in the 1980s on the then illegal Kiss FM. Trevor explores whether the scene has changed considerably since he was in the game or if the musical passion and spirit of pirates past are still present today. Contributors include broadcasters, legal and illegal, a community radio station, fans, musicians, DJs and OFCOM, who were shadowed by the programme on a raid of a pirate station suspected of interfering with Radio 4. Sounds interesting! Regards (via James Welsh (Birkenhead Merseyside UK), July 17, BDXC-UK yg via DXLD; also via Mike Barraclough) ** U S A [non]. Carrier is Greenville, which should be warming up on some other frequency to avoid covering VOA São Tomé. The French hour at 2000-2100 on weekends only, makes a totally unnecessary site switch in the middle of it. If in W African target area, GB has a decent signal after 2030 as it is supposed to, then it also QRMs ST before 2030 not only here but there (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. VOA logged on 19 July 2010 from 2330 to 2350 UT on 7555 kHz. Special English program with VOA News. Also heard Science in the News at 2345, discussing the human genome project and synthetic genome cells. I was only able to raise their signal to an audible level by using passband tuning on the R8A, since efforts to listen on SSB were unsuccessful. I encountered the same “non-atmospheric” noise condition which occurs on this frequency for KJES, though that originates from New Mexico and this was a relay via Kuwait. (Transmitter related or site related?) Decided to send a reception report as well, since there has been mention made that VOA has become an erratic verifier of late. I included a SASE with my reception report. 73’s, (Ed Insinger, Summit, NJ, July 20, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Ed, if the ``non atmospheric noise`` is on the hi side of 7555, it`s likely FUG, as described in DXLD 10-28 under FRANCE (Glenn Hauser, ibid.) Hi Glenn, Yes, initially I tried SSB reception to reduce the “non atmospheric noise” and noted that 7555 kHz USB worsened the condition, while LSB was better to the point of almost being readable. At that point, I tried PBT on the R8A and found a slot where I could listen well enough to read the signal from VOA. Based on the information you alluded to, this is a digital transmission tied in with NATO? I recall a few times (past tense) when I have tuned in to KJES in the 0200 time slot and the signal was either in the clear or readable by switching to the side of the carrier signal to improve readability. That has not occurred of late. Thank you for the feedback; I missed this item in the last DXLD. 73’s, (Ed Insinger, NJ, ibid.) ** U S A [and non]. The station signed on with the pledge of delivering news "in the American tradition of free speech." On this Fourth of July, exactly 60 years later, RFE/RL reaches nearly 20 million people in 28 languages and 21 countries (map) including Russia, Belarus, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. It remains a lifeline for people living in war zones and under authoritarian rule who seek accurate and reliable news and information. Both of those were very strong, and 6940 could be heard at normal and attenuated positions, but not at local on the FRG-7, so in this case it may have been receiver-produced due to overload. 15825, WWCR missing, not even a carrier, July 19 at 2028 a semi-hour before usual QSY time. Add another station ruined by over-reliance on automation: KGGF, 690, Coffeyville KS. Sunday July 18 at 1926 UT I notice open carrier, no modulation. Finally at 1928.5 to 1929.5 a couple of local commercials, more dead air, and 1930, ID as KGGF with Royals Baseball. Back to dead air. For the next two hours I amuse myself by leaving one receiver on 690. There never was any baseball coverage, just silence interrupted occasionally by local commercials. I compared to Enid`s 1640, KFXY which also knows how to unmodulate, having broadcast mostly open carrier for 2-3 days last week. But now they are really running with Royals baseball, and the sporadic awakenings by KGGF match the local spot times on KFXY. As soon as they`re done each time, KFXY resumes live baseball, and KGGF resumes dead air. Some of these times were: 1940.5-1941.5, 1953-1954; 2004 ID as ``your home for Royals baseball in the four states``; 2013.5- 2014.5, 2030-2031; 2031.5 ``The sports powerhouse for the four states, KGGF, 690, Coffeyville-Independence``; 2100 another ID; 2108-2109. At 2112 UT, KGGF outros its Royals coverage, with list of about a dozen local sponsors. Wonder if they think they got their money`s worth, since their ads did air, just no programming to go with them. And will they be due a refund or make-goods? Did they even notice what happened? However, there was one more wrapup segment on the Royals net, giving scores for others games finished or still in progress. Finally as heard on 1640, Royals net signs off, and immediately 690 comes to life, joins some other sports talk in progress about golf, and presumably now stays modulating as I outtune. BTW, KFXY IDed at 2014 as ``The New Faith 1640`` as that remains its prime format, but blown away for silly ballgames. From this behavior, KGGF was obviously getting cue tones from the network about when to cut away for local ads or IDs, and when to rejoin --- yet in between, no audio of programming or network ads for at least two hours. (Many of the mandatory network ads are really local for Kansas City, of no interest anywhere beyond.) In a live game, exact cutaway times could not be predicted, or pre-programmed. Did anyone else notice? Such as people in the 4-state coverage area who would really like to have heard the game? Maybe someone(s) tried to phone or e-mail the station, but obviously there was no one there to pick up on a summer Sunday afternoon, let alone monitor their own output. No doubt there were several other stations audible, really carrying the game, such as from KC itself. These days, many stations run unattended, but someone can be remote- controlling it from anywhere. Of course, it helps to be in the broadcast coverage area so you can tell if anything is wrong, like say, no programming. Ever hear of a silence alarm? There is really no excuse for this, but shows how low the commercial broadcast industry has sunk, when something like this can go on from a 10-kW wide- coverage station and no one at the station knows or cares. When I quit the fulltime broadcasting biz in 1984, some automation was beginning to creep in, but axually having a live person in control at the station was still standard practice. Now most stations, especially commercial, would not dream of paying even minimum wage in order to have somehuman oversight 24/7. Later that evening, 690 did have another baseball broadcast, including the game, Cardinals? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. KEVT 1210 DX TEST UPDATE!!! [Sahuarita AZ; cf DXLD 10-27] Seems that KEVT has decided to go off the air on Sunday night instead of Friday. KEVT will [run] two tests, one on Friday and the second on Sunday, both between 10 and midnight, MST at 10 kW, non directional. The engineer says he'll run the sweep tone CD on the hour at 10, 11, and midnight on both nights. Rest of the program is Mexican music and Spanish talk as "La Raza" (Paul Walker, IL, July 16, NRC-AM via DXLD) What he really means in UT: July 17 and July 19 at 0500-0700 (gh) DX test from KEVT 1210 Sahuarita AZ, which according to Paul Lotsof is about to close down, go out of business so the CE would be running 10 kW non-direxional day pattern UT July 17 at 0500-0700. Paul Walker found out that there would be sweep tones, helpful for DX IDing on the hourtops, July 17 and again on its final final night 48 hours later. Missed checking at 0500 July 17 as I was still TVDXing Kansas, but tried 1210 from 0511 --- fortunately, no sign of KGYN Guymon OK, which must have axually been on its own night pattern, null-ENE! WPHT Philadelphia was dominant with Midnight Radio Network talk in English, and too close to collinear with AZ to null from here on the DX-398, but tropical music audible underneath it. Equally big problem is WOAI IBOC peaking at 1213, so better tuning down to 1209 kHz. At 0517, overblown Spanish announcement, no ID heard yet, as Philadelphia fades, then norteña music. 0520, got it! KEVT`s ``La Raza`` slogan and ``grupera`` which must be the proper term for its format. 0521 WPHT regains ascendancy with Nationwide ad (Glenn Hauser, of another Raza, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) but see OKLAHOMA: it was KGYN, not WPHT e mail address: fluna1030 @ yahoo.com 73, (Patrick Martin, Seaside Oregon, "Come visit us for the 2010 IRCA convention held Sept 24-26 at the Inn At Seaside.", IRCA via DXLD) KEVT-1210 Sweep tones heard here in Calgary AB at 2302 - 2303 MDT on Sony TR-6400 barefoot during thunderstorm. Thx for the reminder, this will give me a good chance to test my new Split Delta Flag antenna (like a Delta Flag (KAZ) antenna but more narrow beam. It is currently set to null the west, but I'll switch feed and resistor and then it will null east and hopefully WPHT is gone, and if not, a little phasing should finish them off. That is, assuming I can stay awake that long as I am suffering from some weird sleeping sickness type virus that I'm told will need a few more days to leave me. 73 KAZ Barrington IL (Neil Kazaross, ibid.) There must be more then one spanish station on 1210, because I heard Spanish buried way under 1210, but no tones or any DX related material. Listened until 12:03 central (Paul Walker, Marion, IL, ibid.) The KEVT test was heard here in Prescott Valley with sweep tone and ID in English at 0501 UT (Bill Block, ibid.) The KEVT test is booming into Southern California right now even with huge QRN and KPRZ. 'Heard sweep tones and code and other goodies. 'Sad that this is the swan song for the station (Mike Sanburn, KG6LJU, 0515 UT July 17, ibid.) The situation on 1210 here in Barrington IL (times CDT) on my new Split Delta Flag Antenna at midnight was a mix of KOKK s/off with God Bless America and KGYN news with WPHT's news a distant third. Then at 0002 KEVT popped on with about 8 sweep tones and then morse code at 0003 and fade up again about 0005 with Mexican music and then a deep voiced man screamed a "La Raza" ID. When I came in from the DX truck about 0014 KEVT had faded away. I suggest that those who need them, keep trying. Their music is very Mexican sounding and they should have sweeps and code at 0100 and 0200 CDT perhaps a couple minutes late if their clock is off, per 0002 sweeps. 73 KAZ Barrington IL (Neil Kazaross, ibid.) The Sunday night 1210 KEVT DX Test was heard at good level at the 10 p.m./05 UT time. Test began a minute early, 0459:08 with loud sweep tones, two morse code idents then more sweep tones, ending about 0459:35. I'll try to check the next hour and maybe the last hour too. 73, (Steve Ratzlaff, NE Oregon, UT July 19, IRCA via DXLD) 1210, KEVT Sahuarita AZ [Tucson] final broadcast audible UT July 19 at 0510 with race music under talk in English from presumed KGYN, 5-6 Hz apart. Nulling KGYN confirms its direxion from Guymon OK but not enough KEVT in that position (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) The DX Test ran again at 0700:05 UT with morse code then sweep tones, then code, then sweep tones, weak in another fade of dominant KTBK. Thanks to Mr. Luna for running the test! 73, (Steve, NE Oregon, Ratzlaff, R75, N/S longwire for all KEVT test receptions, IRCA via DXLD) Well, I didn't think that was going to work, but two code IDs and a sweep tone at 0202 ELT from KEVT made it through here in extreme eastern West Virginia! Some snippets of Mexican music earlier in the hour, and a couple nice IDs from KGYN as well, in a very tight and unstable partial phase null of WPHT. By my calculations KEVT is 1918 miles, KGYN 1296 miles, and WPHT 159 miles. Usually phasing WPHT there's nothing but IBOC from WHKW-1220 when WPHT is phased. Great test! (David Yocis, Shannondale WV (39-13 N, 77-48 W), R71A, longwires, Quantum phase, ibid.) Yowzah! I didn't think I had a prayer of hearing KEVT at this time of year, but I just got to the unattended recordings I made last night, and, sure enough, I was able to pull out some slow code, followed by sweeps and more code, starting about 14 seconds after the 0200 EDT (0600 UTC) TOH. Distance from here is 2083 miles, AZ logging #3! I had to contend with WPHT, my local 50 kW blowtorch on 1200, IBOC noise (probably from WCHB on 1200), and a lot of thunderstorm static - it's just amazing how well the code and sweep s canpunch through all that crud. I haven't had time to listen to much of the recordings yet, but also noted another station under WPHT - possibly KGYN or KOKK, both of which have been heard been here before. Muchas gracias for running this test! (Barry McLarnon, VE3JF, Ottawa, ON, ibid.) It looks like KEVT did go off last night as the only station that I can hear is KPRZ and lots of t-storm noise (Bill Block, Prescott Valley, AZ, 1414 UT July 19, ibid.) ** U S A. The claims of Professor Andrea Micheli, from Milan's National Tumor Institute, focus on 19 child deaths from leukaemia or lymphoma between 1980 and 2003 in the Cesano area, north of Rome; Vatican Radio operates masts nearby in Santa Maria di Galeria. Micheli, a professor of cancer epidemiology, says in his 300-page report: "The study suggests there was an important, coherent and significant link between residential exposure to the Vatican Radio structures and an excess risk of death from leukaemia and lymphoma in the children." He said the raised cancer risk occurred in children under 14 who lived less than 7.5 miles from the masts. He also found evidence of a link between the radiation and adult cancers - but only among those who lived much closer to the antennae. His investigation was ordered by the court five years ago after concerns were raised about an increased incidence of cancer in the area. As a result of Prof Micheli's evidence, six officials of Vatican Radio have been placed under investigation for manslaughter, by investigating magistrate Stefano Pesci. The Vatican was quick to point out yesterday that the Italian Navy also operated radio masts in the area. La Repubblica reported, however, that the leaked court report singled out the Vatican Radio masts as the likely cause, quoting it as saying: "It is due to exposure to the antennae of Vatican Radio and not that of the navy." Father Federico Lombardi, the director general of Vatican Radio, said it had followed all regulations in setting up the masts. He also expressed concern that the report was leaked ahead of its official publication, Vatican Radio, which was set up in 1931, broadcasts to 61 countries in 47 languages (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DXLD) VATICAN RADIO REJECTS RADIATION CLAIM Independent Catholic News By Claire Bergin July 14, 2010 http://www.indcatholicnews.com/news.php?viewStory=16503 Vatican Radio has dismissed press reports about new medical research commissioned by an Italian judge, alleging that electromagnetic radiation from the station's broadcasting towers is leading to an increased risk of cancer. In a broadcast on Tuesday, Fr Federico Lombardi, director of Vatican Radio and the Vatican press office, said international scientific studies carried out in the past had never shown that such a connection exists. He said: "Vatican Radio will present its own comments and counter-deductions from its own technical consultants as soon as possible." "It is important to remember, that Vatican Radio has always adhered to international norms concerning electromagnetic emissions limits," he said. In 2001, the station entered into an agreement with Italy to adhere to even stricter limits so as to "carefully respond, as is due, to the potential concerns of nearby residents." In 2005, Cardinal Roberto Tucci, a former president of Vatican Radio's management committee, and Fr Pasquale Borgomeo SJ, a former general director, were found guilty of the criminal charge of "dangerously showering objects" on residents near the transmission centre. Two years later the convictions were overturned by an appeals court. A Rome source told ICN: "This is an old story. Berlusconi's relatives want the land and their first claim failed the simple test of evidence. Their next attempt was to use an old Italian law dating back to the days of bows and arrows which prohibited the throwing of dangerous objects. This was based on the premise that if people living near Santa Maria di Galeria need to put up a shield to protect their satellite dish from picking up Vatican Radio broadcasts, then something must have been thrown... ergo hoc... "This story dates back to at least 2003. Their lawyer, Giacomo Ghisani said in 2007 that this was a typically Italian story that would go backwards and forwards because it raises the whole nature of the Lateran Pact and the nature of Vatican City. Can Italy arrest a Cardinal living on Vatican territory? If Vatican City is a sovereign State, then has it the right to pursue its own objectives without interference from a neighbouring State? "As a matter of fact, one of the reasons why Vatican City has photovoltaic cells on top of the roof of the audience hall is so that, if Italy were to decide to cut off the electricity supply for some reason, Vatican City could still generate at least some of its own power." "The whole issue here is land which Berlusconi's relatives want for development and which he is determined to get by hook or by crook." An Italian medical doctor commented: "this does sound like the start of the silly season to me. If a genuine scientific study has been conducted then the report should be made available for peer review." (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via DXLD) More details: BBC News By David Willey Rome 14 July 2010 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-10634977 There is a "coherent and significant connection" between radiation from Vatican Radio aerials and childhood cancer, researchers have said. The Italian experts looked at high numbers of tumours and leukaemia in children who live close to Vatican Radio transmitters. The 60 antennas stand in villages and towns near Rome. The Vatican said it was astonished and would present contrary views to a court in Rome. Italian courts have been investigating for 10 years whether of an abnormally high number of deaths from cancer among families living near the aerials just north of the Italian capital can be attributed to electromagnetic radiation. The 300-page report, ordered by the courts and carried out by Italy's most prestigious cancer research hospital, now concludes that there is a connection between radiation and the cancer incidents. Obsolete: Some 60 huge steel aerials were erected on farmland owned by the Vatican during the last century. They transmit Vatican Radio programmes around the world on medium and short wave. However, the technology is now largely obsolete, as Catholic radio stations in many countries rebroadcast Vatican Radio shows after picking them up on the Internet. In one court case against the Vatican the statute of limitations ran out, but another case is still pending. The Vatican says it intends to defend its position and claims there is no threat to public health through its transmissions. People living near the aerials say the radio waves affect TV reception and interfere with many household electronic appliances (via Mike Terry, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DXLD) Assumption, only the powerful 1530 kHz antenna was risk remarkable in 2001 year: a - There are also rumours, that Mafia Real Estate firms would make intense efforts to buy that fillet property. In the court of 2001 year only the maximum output power of MW 1530 kHz was reduced so far. According Boel European MW list the output is now reduced to 150 kW only. In an exclusive interview with VOA's Foro Interamericano (Inter- American Forum), Globovisión President, Guillermo Zuloaga, said he "cannot go back to Venezuela," where he was briefly detained in March for criticizing the government of President Hugo Chavez. In the interview, which airs Friday on VOA, Zuloaga said, "For the time being I am not returning to Venezuela. U.S. government officials, as well as attorneys, have recommended that I request political asylum, but I have not made a decision." In June, the government ordered Zuloaga's arrest on charges that he and his son hoarded automobiles, allegations he denies. Last week, Zuloaga left Venezuela and came to Washington where he met with officials of the Organization of American States to explain his case and the situation of freedom of the press in Venezuela. VOA has been airing excerpts of the interview on radio, television (El Mundo al Día) and voanoticias.com. The entire interview will be aired Friday on Foro Interamericano. At 1343 another station fades up briefly with YL host, phone number starting with 944-, perhaps a local swap show somewhere. 1580, KOKB Blackwell OK cooperated again this Saturday by deleting modulation, but keeping carrier on to muscle aside the local noise level, which was rather severe, so I strain to hear the Spanish station underneath. The changing complexion of the MW band and how it has become a syndicate- driven talk wasteland is why it is no fun anymore. It's not even a matter of being more of a challenge now, but rather more of a sorry pain in the ass because of how he broadcast industry has put profit way ahead of the basic palatability of their product. I'll gladly listen to (or through) a crappy mono AM broadcast of an oldies format with live DJ any day over a syndicated bunch of hot-air with spin on some major metro 50 kW signal. Back in the 70's and 80's when we actually had AM stations that ID'ed after every second song (or more) with a vertical and breathing DJ at the mic, it was very fun and interesting to DX because you were literally taking a trip around the continent with a spin of the dial on your radio. And, you actually had ads for LOCAL businesses (not national ads), and weather forecasts on the 30-min that could clue you into where your station was from. Nowadays, you have several stations on the same channel, sometimes having the exact same satellite feed at times, so good luck with getting IDs. Plus, do I REALLY want to wade through 30 minutes of sports chatter or right-wing conspiracy theories to catch the ID of what signal I have on or behind that station? (Some IDs are now being digitally time-compressed so as to take less than 0.5 sec, slid in between a slogan somewhere). It has indeed become really bad; but is PRIMARILY a U.S. issue. No other country that I am aware of appears to be suffering with this same problem on their AM band (being mainly all-talk, and lack of local programming or IDs), except perhaps Canada, simply because they're just shutting down their AMs, and have to deal with our mess on their AM band at night. Even FM DXing is very difficult now - you have to deal with a slogan rather than call letters, and lots (I mean LOTS) of 'dot-com' and '1- 800' telephone number based national ads, which do not necessarily give you an inkling where your station is from (and most FMs don't put call letters on their RDS or iBOC, but rather their name or slogan). I tried daytime DXing on FM last week during my trip to Venice, Louisiana during tropo conditions with RDS, and also to try for groundwave AMs making the trip across the Gulf (yes, many were as far away as Cuba). But having to listen over an hour for a call-lettered ID on a single channel having several stations on it is ridiculous. I guess an iPhone is an absolute necessity when you DX nowadays so you can research the Web for a station by slogan or to see who has a certain format or talk show lineup at a particular time and frequency. When I was 6 years old, my very first AM station list that I used for DXing was the back 2 pages of a State Farm Road Atlas which listed all the 50 kW AM radio stations in the U.S. and Canada by call letters, frequency, and format. That station list, along with my 8-transistor Philco and earphone, and a flashlight under the covers was all I needed to have hours of fun at night (Darwin Long, Simi Valley, CA, ABDX via DXLD) For me, it was always about the music. So MW / AM DX died for me when the band migrated to the piddle, drivel, and swill of talk, sports, and foreign. FM DX was a logical progression as music left the AM band for FM. The 300 mile plus stuff was amazing, and for a teenager stuck in the heart of redneck, Texas, it was welcome relief from country bumpkin fare available locally. Or censored top-40. My bad luck was to have changing musical taste - I switched to Contemporary Christian - only to have it taken over by the praise and worship and hymn crowd. So with the demise of most Christian rock - I had no uplifting music available. Until streaming, that is - which I do enthusiastically on the few channels that still offer Christian rock - not wimped out praise music. Bottom line - for me DX was always a pain in the posterior more than a hobby - you do what you have to do to get the music you like. If the local stations won't play it - dump them for something better. I ate static for years and years because the local radio absolutely sucked. If I could even get what I wanted by DX'ing, I'd still eat static. But it isn't available so I don't DX, I stream. I know for some it is a fun hobby and I've had fun doing it on occasion, but for me it was and is about music and if I had what I wanted locally, I'd set the dial there and be content (Bruce Carter, TX, ibid.) SHORTWAVE - IS IT STILL WORTH IT? The RadioReference.com Forums discuss this issue and many more at http://forums.radioreference.com/ What is the state of the Shortwave Art at this point? Has the Internet murdered it - or mortally wounded it? Here's a typical contribution: "Back in the 1980s people were saying that AM radio is obsolete, predicting it wouldn't even be around by the new millennium. Well, AM (MW) broadcast stations are much more popular now than they were then. There's some weird, natural human tendency to keep predicting the demise of radio. Now I see a lot of people thinking that about shortwave. I honestly don't understand the rationale behind that thinking either. Because, in the event that new tech communications systems fail, which they can, well radio has to be there. Like a duty. It ain't going nowhere, its not waining out. Only in peoples imaginations it is. The full story can be audio downloaded at http://www.npr.org Additional information relating to numbers stations is also available at http://www.irdial.com/conet.htm and http://www.spynumbers.com Shortwave was described by Mark Stout, historian at the International Spy Museum as an "antiquated technology" that does not leave any traceability, since the data is collected via paper and pencil, using a shortwave radio. The audio download contains clips from numbers stations (Ed Insinger, Summit, NJ, July 17, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Viz.: by NPR Staff, July 17, 2010, Radio tower [caption?] Numbers stations are unlicensed, which makes it hard to figure out where they're broadcasting from. In the shadowy corners of the shortwave radio spectrum, you can often find mysterious mechanical voices counting off endless strings of numbers — in English, Czech, Russian and German … even Morse code. But who's listening? The voices are coming from what are known as "numbers stations," and they've long been thought to be part of international espionage operations. In fact, the Russian spies recently captured here in the U.S. may have been getting orders from Moscow via a shortwave numbers station. Mark Stout is the official historian at the International Spy Museum. He tells NPR's Guy Raz that the stations are unlicensed, which makes it hard to figure out where they're broadcasting from. And the mystery only deepens: No government has ever officially admitted to using numbers stations. No one's really sure when the stations began broadcasting, though they're most likely a Cold War-era invention. And, Stout says, no matter how advanced modern computer cryptography is, good old shortwave is often the best option for getting messages to spies in the field. "Because [a message] can be broadcast over such an enormous area, you can be transmitting to an agent who may be thousands of miles away," he says. And, he adds, computer communications almost always leave traces. "It's really hard to erase data out of your hard drive or off a memory stick," he says. "But all you need here is a shortwave radio and pencil and paper." (via Insinger, DXLD) continued: Thousands of enthusiasts all over the world track numbers station broadcasts, but no one's been able to crack them yet. Stout says that's because the transmissions use an unbreakable encryption system called a one-time pad: encryption key is completely random and changes with every message. "You really truly cryptanalytically have no traction getting into a one-time pad system," Stout says. "None at all." But if you still want to have a go at it, get a shortwave radio and start listening. Stout says there are plenty of websites that list the stations that may be on the air right now. I was previously puzzled on a few occasions when I was able to log KAWB-28, Brainerd MN, but from around 250 degrees, instead of the proper 326 degrees. There was never a trace of signal bar on the proper heading. If finally dawned on me that my preamp is overloading when I aim the antenna at the Twin Cities Shoreview antenna site, 12 miles at 324 degrees. When signals were analog, overload was obvious. With digital, there is no clear indication on screen. When these signals get strong enough, I can log them on antenna side lobes, with the locals attenuated. Brainerd is only a couple of degrees off the Shoreview heading. K38LE is only a few degrees off the Shoreview reverse heading. Nice to see the stations, but a shame to think of what could be missed. If I still had 7' parabolics like I had in North Dakota, with these slight heading offsets and the parabolic's lesser side lobes, I may not be able to log these two at all! (Fred McCormack, Maplewood MN, Winegard CH-9095, Winegard AP-4700, Insignia NS-DXA1, July 19, WTFDA via DXLD) The above could explain why I am not getting my only local DTV, KXOK- 31 when I aim antenna directly at it, but instead some 50 degrees away. I also sometimes get decode from it when aimed completely away at odd direxions, but never right at it. As someone pointed out before, the `signal` bar on the DTV converters does *not* strictly indicate raw signal strength, but ``decodability``. It never reaches the level indicated from OKC stations, however, which never show any overload problem (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST) PROPAGATION +++++++++++ Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to minor storm levels. Mostly quiet conditions occurred until late on 14 July. Activity increased to unsettled to minor storm levels during 14/2100 - 15/0300 UTC. Activity decreased to quiet to unsettled levels for the rest of 15 July with some active periods detected at high latitudes. Activity decreased to mostly quiet levels for the remainder of the period. ACE solar wind data indicated the increased activity during 14 - 15 July was due to a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The disturbance began with the arrival late on 14 July of a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) in advance of the CH HSS. Interplanetary magnetic field activity during the CIR included increased total field intensity (peak 18 nT at 14/2154 UTC) and intermittent periods of southward Bz (maximum deflection -16 nT at 14/2234 UTC). Solar wind velocities increased during 14 - 15 July and reached a peak of 505 km/sec at 15/0311 UTC. Velocities began to gradually decrease around midday on 15 July. FORECAST OF SOLAR AND GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY 21 JULY - 16 AUGUST 2010 Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels during most of the period. However, there is a chance for isolated C-class flares from Region 1089 until it departs the visible disk on 01 August. No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels during 26 July - 07 August. Normal to moderate flux levels are expected during the remainder of the period. Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet levels from 21 July through most of 22 July. Activity is expected to increase to unsettled levels late on 22 July as a recurrent coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS) begins to disturb the field. Quiet to unsettled levels with a chance for brief active periods are expected during 23 - 29 July as CH HSS effects persist. Activity is expected to decrease to quiet levels during 30 July - 10 August. Activity is expected to increase to quiet to unsettled levels with a chance for brief active periods during 11 - 12 August due to a recurrent CH HSS. Quiet conditions are expected during 13 - 16 August. :Product: 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table 27DO.txt :Issued: 2010 Jul 20 2021 UTC # Prepared by the US Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center # Product description and SWPC contact on the Web # http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wwire.html # # 27-day Space Weather Outlook Table # Issued 2010 Jul 20 # # UTC Radio Flux Planetary Largest # Date 10.7 cm A Index Kp Index 2010 Jul 21 82 5 2 2010 Jul 22 82 7 3 2010 Jul 23 82 10 4 2010 Jul 24 80 10 4 2010 Jul 25 80 7 3 2010 Jul 26 78 7 3 2010 Jul 27 76 10 4 2010 Jul 28 74 10 4 2010 Jul 29 74 8 3 2010 Jul 30 72 5 2 2010 Jul 31 72 5 2 2010 Aug 01 72 5 2 2010 Aug 02 72 5 2 2010 Aug 03 74 5 2 2010 Aug 04 76 5 2 2010 Aug 05 78 5 2 2010 Aug 06 80 5 2 2010 Aug 07 80 5 2 2010 Aug 08 80 5 2 2010 Aug 09 80 5 2 2010 Aug 10 78 5 2 2010 Aug 11 78 8 3 2010 Aug 12 78 10 4 2010 Aug 13 78 5 2 2010 Aug 14 78 5 2 2010 Aug 15 80 5 2 2010 Aug 16 82 5 2 (SWPC via WORLD OF RADIO 1522, DXLD) TIPS FOR RATIONAL LIVING ++++++++++++++++++++++++ ATHEISTS BREAK OUT NEW RITUAL TOOL: THE BLOW-DRYER Nonbelievers Adopt Provocative Ceremony to Make a Point About Baptism By DAN HARRIS, ERIC JOHNSON and MARY FLYNN July 16, 2010 Wielding a blow-dryer, a leading atheist conducted a mass "de-baptism" of fellow non-believers and symbolically dried up the offending waters that were sprinkled on their foreheads as young children. . . http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/atheists-conduct-de-baptisms/story?id=11109379 Video: http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/war-religion-atheism-church-leader-priest-11185937 (via DXLD) DR. ED BUCKNER ON WWZN (BOSTON, 1510 AM) INTERNET THIS SATURDAY JULY 24, 2010 -- 10:00 AM ET ~ Glen Beck, The Founders, Atheism & More Dr. Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists, will be the guest on The Samantha Clemens Show" this Saturday, July 24, 2010 The show airs from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM on WWZN Boston, 1510 AM and will be streamed live on the internet. To access the program, visit http://samanthaclemens.com/ Glen Beck is on a crusade; a self-appointed prophet of God, the Founding Fathers, and anyone else he can think of. According to him, social justice is wicked. Collective salvation is what liberals are trying to get by taking wealth from individuals and spreading to the needy. And atheists are to blame for it all. As reported in the Utah News… First, though, he asked the audience to visualize a pyramid illustrating his view of how liberals are attacking America’s foundation. Originally, he said, America was built on God at its base and personal charity (as opposed to government welfare) at its center, with government occupying only the pointy, narrow top, doing only the things people couldn’t do for themselves. Now, he argued, the U.S. government has reversed the equation, insinuating itself into all aspects of life while pushing God aside. “There is a perversion of faith right now,” he said, “a wicked, wicked perversion. And it is all about social justice. It is all about collective salvation. It’s actually all about Marxism.” Collective salvation, he said, is a liberal goal meant to force individuals into doing the right thing by taking wealth from them and spreading it to the needy. In his view, he said, salvation only comes when individuals accept God. Utah News, July 18, 2010. We’re going to get a real live atheist on the show to explain why he wants to destroy America by imposing Marxism and thus thwarting the Founding Fathers, who apparently weren’t deists or atheists… except they were. Interestingly, even faith organizations are protesting Beck’s characterizations – we’ll look into that as well.
