Miércoles se cumplen 44 años de la caída de la última dictadura militar
en Venezuela. Al efecto, para celebrar esa importante fecha toda la
sociedad civil venezolana en compañia de organizaciones no
gubernamentales, partidos políticos y público en general, realizarán a
partir de las 12:00 horas UTC una gran marcha en contra del gobierno
del Presidente Hugo Chávez Frías, el cual se ha caracterizado en
estos últimos meses en atacar de manera verbal y através de sus
fanáticos a todos los medios de comunicación que no esten de acuerdo
con su gestión de gobierno.
La Marcha de mañana será considerada como la más multitudinaria que
jamás se haya hecho en contra de un Presidente en la historia
democrática de Venezuela. El partido de gobierno va a realizar otra
marcha en la misma hora, para de esta manera contrarestar a la de
oposición. Actualmente hay en el país una atmosfera muy tensa, cuando
solo faltan horas para ese acontecimiento y porque se teme que puedan
haber heridos y hasta muertos.
La razón es porque existe los llamados "Círculos Bolivarianos", ordas
de personas parecidos a los comites de defensa cubanos, que desean
aplastar cualquier tipo de manifestación en contra del presidente
Chávez. Esperamos que esto no suceda, pero solicitamos a todos que
sintonizen las emisoras venezolanas, sean por onda corta ó Internet,
así como la televisión venezolana porque la jornada de mañana será muy
larga y seguramente marcará un hito muy importante en la historia
contemporanea de nuestro país. ¡Muchas Gracias!

{HOWEVER, it appears that CBC webcasting is suspended, or severely
disrupted during the Olympix, until Feb 24, so we may also ignore CBC,
until then in keeping with their desire not to be heard. Or maybe not;
here`s Kevin Kelly`s evaluation as of Sunday Feb 10:}
Initially it looked like a complete block, but now it seems that for the
Toronto streams (R1 CBLA and R2 CBL) only, they are turning the service on
and off selectively. Sunday afternoon I found both streams available from
2115 UT through a cutoff at 2158 just when an Olympics update was about to
begin; they came back by 2205. When the streams are blocked they're totally
inaccessible -- you can't get at them with an old shortcut or ram file.
I find it incredible that CBC is taking the heavy-handed approach of
shutting down all the regional streams entirely, especially when the
Toronto streams show that they have the technology to do better than that.
Thankfully, BBC WS is taking the minimally restrictive approach this time,
unlike in 2000. They don't seem to have asked their PRI affiliates to do
anything special. (Kelly) [re CBC see note a bit below]
NOTE: we kept entering some CBC picks, but UT Tue Feb 19, when the Toronto
feed suddenly cut back to `Olympic TS` six minutes into IDEAS, and would not
come back, we decided we had had it with this nonsense, and cannot recommend
trying to listen to CBC webcasts, unless you have a very high frustration
toleration level! Existing entries will be left there, but no new ones
made until the Olympics are over Feb. 25. Even archive audio of some shows
has been suspended; such as Sun Feb. 17 The World This Weekend which was
supposed to feature Radio 101, Moscow. We reached a summary of that week`s
show, which lacked such a feature, and the audio link went nowhere, while
the latest audio actually available for that show was Feb. 3.

** U S A. It`s time for another sweeps stunt, Today on NBC-TV, as another
series of Where In the World is Matt Lauer? got underway May 13, it turned out,
from Rio de Janeiro. We missed the first hour, but the second hour had only a
couple segments, from the beach, about the big Christ statue, and about the
Amazon --- all incredibly superficial, but nice scenery and fun. There wasn`t
much in the third hour beyond the first few minutes, as Matt and Co. had to get
moving to their next secret destination for the following morning.
It`s standard procedure for the Today hosts left back in New York to be kept in
the dark about each destination, beyond guessing on a clue. But most of the
segments have obviously been pre-produced, and one can only wonder if Katie
could help overhearing someone in the Today hallway talking about it days or
weeks before. If she did, would she still have to pretend to be in the dark, in
effect, lying? Dear, sweet Katie, with the sinewy calves no doubt responsible
for much of Today`s ratings lead, if not her constant gummy smile? Surely not!
If truth were known, many of the NY segments are also pre-produced, and the
live hosts just string them together, much like NPR radio magazines.
Why go to all the trouble and expense to visit five different countries in a
row, and then only do a few segments from each? Can we not suspend even for one
week, the usual rounds of NY-based celebrity/author interviews, NBC program
promotion and devote the entire two --- yea three – hours to the exotic
